Come on a short walk and talk along the Shannon in Portumna. We will look
at flora and fauna. Hear stories of the nearby Workhouse, Hymany way and
how the river has contributed to the local community.
Come on this wonderful journey through time and nature and find out how
the flow of the Shannon in Portumna has impacted on the local community
and its history. Three dedicated guides chat about The Hymany Way,
Shannon Banks, flora, Fauna & Birds, The Workhouse stories and drought in
Ireland and the importance of the waterways to the local community .

From Prominent Iron Age settlement to modern day village, the history of
the North East village of CastleBlakeney.
Gallagh Bog man (c500BC). Horse racing (c1700) around the village. Church of
Ireland church built 1711, Heritage Centre (1999). O'Kelly & Blakeney
families, Scottish, Napoleon connections and American relations.Stories:Local
famine orphans that left Castleblakeney & traveled to Western Australia in
1852. Mannequin of Mary Anne Taylor, orphan, who left in 1852 to Australia
never return but family have traced their roots back to Castleblakeney.

See the Wood from the Trees

Organiser GMIT Letterfrack and Artisan House Editions
Venue: GMIT Letterfrack Gallery, Letterfrack

A story of storm-felled oak, beech, ash trees which were gifted by President Higgins
to Galway/Mayo IT. The delivery, processes of conversion/seasoning and being
made into beautifully designed products.
The authors provide an illuminating account on the significance of trees in Irish
culture; the plantations at Áras an Úachtaráin, transformative story of Letterfrack,
and the development of the National Centre for Excellence in Furniture Design and
Technology. The book contains a foreword by President Higgins, an introduction by
architect/broadcaster, Duncan Stewart, and poems by Theo Dorgan, The Farmleigh
Alphabet which were written during a residency in Farmleigh in the Phoenix Park in
2015.

           Furnace Festival 2018
                      25th - 26th August, 9am - 6pm

Organiser: Sliabh Aughty Furnace Project

Venue: Woodford, Co. Galway (at the Bay)

A weekend of iron smelting and forging! Local iron ore, charcoal and clay will
be used to make iron in the area for the first time in nearly 250 years.
The iron smelting will be done, one the hand, by two groups of Irish people
newly trained in smelting the previous week. On the other hand, 13 groups
from all over Europe will build their own furnaces. Afterwards, this Irish iron
will be forged by Irish blacksmiths. The event takes place in the park next to
the bridge in Woodford, is open for all to see and promises to be a
spectacular event. The East Galway Family History Society will have an
exhibition on iron smelting in the heritage center.

one of Europe's largest raised bogs. From magic mosses to flesh-eating
plants, get the whole bog story with the Living Bog team. The Living Bog is
Ireland’s largest single raised bog restoration project - restoring 12 raised
bogs in 7 counties. Raised Bogs once covered 3/4 of a million acres of Ireland
& are among Europe’s oldest near-natural eco-systems. Today just 1% of this
is said to be active, living raised bog.

Stroll along the boreen and around the meadow and visit the Botany Bubble
to discover the traditional uses for the plants that grow wild in our
hedgerows and meadows.
Burren Nature Sanctuary Botany Bubble houses the National Collection of
Burren flora and wildflowers in season we have created a beautiful
sculptured stone garden filled with heritage plants gathered from around this
50 acre organic farm. The land here has never been treated with artificial
chemicals and is managed through traditional farming practices for years.
Visitors can learn about the traditional healing properties of plants such as
elderflower and berries, self-heal, meadowsweet.

experience to see how the inmates and staff of the workhouse lives and to

what one might expect to find in a newspapers about the workhouse.
Children can produce their own little artwork papers and their unique story

equipment. Traditional household items. Musical pieces from the
Claregalway Fife and Drum Band, founded in 1909. Recently acquired
artefacts relating to the Claregalway Franciscan friary, an oil portrait of the
last Franciscan friar and details of the 1687 Claregalway chalice.

A guided walk to mark the centenary of Robert Gregory's death during WW1.
Son of Lady Gregory, he is the subject of WB Yeats' famous poem 'An Irish
Airman foresees his death'.
To celebrate the centenary of Robert Gregory’s death on the Italian front in
1918 there will be a talk/walk at Coole Park. The story of his life will include
memories of his daughter, Anne and anecdotes from his mother, Lady
Gregory. As well as being a much loved and respected Commanding Officer,
Robert Gregory was an accomplished artist, a fine point-to-point horseman
and also played cricket for Ireland.

Talk on George Bernard Shaw by Dr. Adrian Paterson, Lecturer in English at
the National University of Ireland, Galway.
Dr. Paterson recently participated in a round table discussion entitled “Shaw
Our Contemporary” at the Butler Library, Heyman Centre for Humanities,
Columbia University, New York – a discussion which preceded a lecture given
by Fintan O Toole at the same venue. Shaw spent some time in Oughterard
when Clareville House was in the ownership of his mother's family - Gurlys

Local Historian David Broderick provides a lecture on Workhouse Master,
Henry Ogle, and the mystery surrounding his disappearance.
Local Historian David Broderick's investigates the disappearance of
Workhouse Master Ogle who escaped the long arm of the law. This
illustrated talk will follow the footsteps of Henry Ogle from Portumna, across
the Atlantic Ocean and to the busy streets of nineteenth century New York
City.

Medical Practices in Ireland 1500 BC to Present. Practicing Medical
Herbalist/Physician Emmett Walsh will discuss the extraordinary history of
Irish medicine and its place in world medical practices.
Emmett Walsh will examine Irish medical practices, starting with Irish druidic
medicine. He will explore how druidic medicine became diluted by European
medical practices during the period of decline from approximately the 5th to
17th Century. We will also explore the pre-modern (Approx 1650-1940) and
the modern medical practices (1940 – present).
