Where the Compostelle routes in France
are concerned, 71 monuments as well as
7 parts of the routes haven been officially
granted UNESCO World Heritage status
since 1998 as “Routes of Saint-Jacques-
de-Compostelle in France”.

Since the 11th century, this pilgrimage
developed and became one of the most
important pilgrimages. While the Spanish
shrine is the destination, the 4 historical
routes pass through a large part of French
territory and the more inspired pilgrims
or motivated hikers continue to walk in
ever increasing numbers on the routes
leading to the tomb of Saint-Jacques at
Compostelle in Spain.

Today, this expedition could involve several
tens of thousands of toughened hikers
per year. Many more walk in stages and
advance from year to year enjoying a
state of mind, unspoiled landscapes and a
number of historical sites and monuments. THE 4 ROUTES of saint- from the Saint Jacques Tower in Paris to

     “
He is the man I have prepared for you”:
those were the words heard by the young
Zélie Guérin, lacemaker, on the Pont
de Sarthe as she came across Louis Martin Basilique Notre Dame
one fine day in 1858. The marriage would be
celebrated on 12 July in the church of Notre
Dame at midnight. This would be the starting
point in the life of the couple, who raised their
five daughters to follow the road of humanity
and spiritual growth, with a simple motto
“God served first”. It was as a result of this
education that the youngest, Thérèse, became Maison Natale de Sainte Thérèse Chapelle de Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei

 B
orn in Lourdes in 1844, Bernadette
Soubirous was 14 years old when the
Virgin Mary appeared to her at the
     Rock of Massabielle.
On 7 July 1866, to achieve her desire for a
religious life, Bernadette arrived at the Saint
Gildard Convent and joined the Sisters of
Charity of Nevers, whom she knew from the
     hospice school in Lourdes.
     Bernadette remained at the order’s
motherhouse in Nevers for 13 years. Her
simple, ordinary life was entirely devoted to
God and to others. When she died on 16 April
1879, her body was interred in a small chapel
in the convent grounds. Found to be intact in
1909, it was finally laid to rest in 1925 within
a shrine in the chapel of the Saint Gildard
Convent. On 8 December 1933, the Church
presented Bernadette to all God’s people as
an evangelical sign and she was declared a
saint. Sainte Bernadette church Ducal Palace
