Training & Development Brochure 2018-19 - Gateway Alliance
Welcome

About us…

The Gateway Alliance is a school company created and led by a group of primary schools and academies
from across Warwickshire. We are primary school specialists and work together to provide high quality
professional development, training and support which enhances teaching and learning and supports the
delivery of improved outcomes for children. We are currently supporting more than three quarters of the
primary schools across Warwickshire and a growing number from further afield, through our professional
learning activities and School Direct programme.

                                 Why Choose Gateway?
                  Affordable…

Gateway aims to ensure that all of our training and events are affordable to schools. We are a
not-for-profit organisation and always ensure that we keep the costs of our programmes to an
absolute minimum, whilst continuing to bring you the very best speakers and use experienced
facilitators with a proven track record of successfully supporting school improvement.

                  High Quality…
We use a comprehensive quality assurance framework to do all we can to ensure that our
training programmes and events are of the highest quality. We only use high quality trainers
and facilitators who have a track record of exceptional school experience and in developing
and delivering high quality CPD opportunities. We always aim to offer the highest quality
professional learning programmes and, based on feedback we received last year, an average of
99% of attendees rated our events as good or excellent.

                  Responsive & Relevant…
As an alliance of primary schools we are well aware of the challenges that schools currently
face. We work hard to ensure that all of our training and events are relevant and up to date in
their content in order to support schools to develop their staff effectively to meet the needs of
                  current and future learners.

                  Impact …
As a group of schools we know that there is nothing more frustrating than investing in
professional development activities for your staff that do not impact on your school. We are
therefore continually looking to refine and improve our offer, in response to your feedback, to
ensure that all of our activities have a practical impact on the practice of those attending, their
                  school and pupils.

STEPHEN ANWYLL
Refining Assessment Policy and Practice to Support
Teaching and Learning
Two years after their first implementation, this session will explore the implications of the assessment
arrangements and accountability measures under the revised National Curriculum. It will consider how
schools are adapting to a shift in focus from attainment onto pupil progress throughout the primary
phase. It will look at the impact of the new accountability measures for schools serving different kinds of
communities and consider the outcomes of the Government’s national consultation on primary
assessment. There will be an opportunity to reflect on how the new test and teacher assessment
arrangements are affecting school practice, how school data is being presented following the end of
RAISEonline and how Ofsted has responded to the new assessment landscape.

                                                                                  DAVID WESTON

Attracting, retaining and developing great teachers has never been so important, but uncontrollable
workload is cited as one of the top challenges. In this session, David will explore the evidence-informed
approaches that some schools are using to get working hours under control, make assessment more
manageable, focus on staff development to support school improvement and increase impact.

Cost: Part of the Maths Subject Leader Core Offer subscription OR £110 per delegate for non-subscribing schools

   Event Overview:
In this hands-on session, participants will explore a range of story picture books that can be used to
enrich EYFS, KS1 and KS2 mathematics teaching and learning. The participants will also consider
which selection criteria should be taken into account when selecting suitable mathematical story
picture books. The participants will then learn about a pilot research project in which I set out to
explore gender representation in mathematical story picture books and how they need to be mindful
of diversity when selecting which books they want to use in their teaching. The bulk of the session will
then be spent on having the participants working in small groups to design a mathematics teaching
and learning activity based on a story picture book of their choice. Finally, the participants will be
shown how they can continue to receive support through the MathsThroughStories.org website as well
as how they can be part of the initiative (e.g. contributing to lesson ideas). This workshop will be useful
for both participants who are new to the idea of using story picture books in mathematics teaching
and those who have had some experience of using the resource.

Speaker Profile: Dr. Natthapoj Vincent Trakulphadetkrai is interested in research that centres around
the use of creative stories to help enhance mathematics and statistics teaching and
learning for young children and adult learners respectively. Currently, he leads the
‘Maths Through Stories' project (www.mathsthroughstories.org), an international
research consortium of over 50 colleagues across 40 countries around the world which
sets out to investigate various aspects of the integration of creative stories in
                      mathematics and statistics education.

In addition to his lectureship in Primary Mathematics Education at the University of
Reading, Dr. Trakulphadetkrai also works with a number of national mathematics
education organisations, including the Association of Teachers of Mathematics (ATM)
                      and the Mathematical Association (MA).

Session Overview:
This session aims to develop teachers and Maths subject leaders’ understanding of the common difficulties
research suggests children with SEND experience in relation to number and calculation. During the session
colleagues will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of the early stages of
children’s development of ‘number sense’. We will look at an approach to identifying gaps in learning and
try out approaches to support that can be used back in school.

Cost: £40 for schools that subscribe to the Maths Leader Core Offer OR £80 per delegate for non-subscribing schools

Session Overview:
The construct ‘mathematical resilience’ allows learners to manage and protect themselves from unhelpful
emotions, such as mathematics anxiety, that may arise when mathematics becomes difficult to learn, and to
recruit appropriate support. Mathematical resilience is not just something that learners do or do not have, it
can be grown. We will explore the Growth Zone Model as a means to help learners understand and
articulate their feelings when they are learning mathematics. We will also explore how teaching for
mathematical resilience enables learners to become convinced that they can do mathematics.
Teaching for resilience involves learners developing:
       • A growth mindset
       • A willingness to struggle
       • A knowledge of how to work at mathematics
       • An understanding of the meaning, value and purpose there is in maths

Session Overview:

This session will introduce delegates to an effective system for teaching spelling across the primary phase.
This system does not just focus on learning spellings for a weekly spelling test but is designed to give pupils
the confidence and skills to tackle the spelling of new words independently, drawing on their previous
knowledge and applying this to their own written work. By combining a mixture of direct teaching,
investigations and fun activities, pupils will cover the required content of the national curriculum and
develop a bank of strategies to support them as life long spellers. This comprehensive system is designed
to be flexible, allowing teachers to use assessment for learning and their professional judgement to meet
the spelling needs of their pupils. This session will also include case studies of how teachers have used the
materials and methods in their own classrooms across a range of ages and settings.

   Event Overview:
As an experienced Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Leader, consultant, author, writer
and researcher Andy Burt has explored EYFS practice from a wide variety of perspectives.
In this training, Andy will share the key elements of effective practice as explored in his co-
written text ‘Understanding Young Children’s Learning Through Play’.
In this inspiring session, Andy will draw on examples of how, by starting from the children’s
own experiences, we can support young learners in nurturing and growing a strong
exploratory drive for new learning. Andy will explore how we can plan for and develop an
environment based around children’s own fascinations and interests and how this can
provide the basis for skilful interactions, creative expression and learning across every area
   of the curriculum.

of a lesson can be key to children's development.
This practical, enjoyable course will provide delegates with a varied tool box for ongoing assessment of children in the
core subjects and beyond. From Key Stage 1, to Key Stage 2 there will be numerous interactive tasks, with minimum
preparation time, that enable teachers to check the learning of their class in meaningful ways.

SESSION 4: Essential Maths: Developing Your Skills in the Teaching of Primary Mathematics

Led by: Vivien Townsend

This session covers a range of current issues for the teacher of primary mathematics. The course includes a brief
introduction to bar modelling and an approach to tackling word problems which emphasises understanding and
representation. Sticking with the theme of understanding, and in response to the 2020 national Y4 multiplication check,
the course addresses strategies for ensuring conceptual understanding and fluency with multiplication facts. Finally the
afternoon looks at aspects of mastery, especially the idea of keeping the class together, and attendees will have the
chance to evaluate ways of adapting existing problems so that all pupils can be engaged on the same mathematical
activity. Attendees will leave with plenty of strategies that they can try out in their primary classrooms along with
information on how to access high quality freely available resources to support planning. There will be plenty of
opportunity for asking questions and for NQTs and RQTs to share ideas on the day.

SESSION 1: From Dependence to Independence
This session will support teaching assistants to improve the nature and quality of their ‘talk’ to pupils in order to support the
development of independent thinking and learning skills, which are associated with improved learning outcomes. It will also focus
on the effective use of resources to aid independence in learning and working in effective partnership with class teachers.
This session will help teaching assistants to promote pupil’s independence in learning, particularly for lower attaining pupils and
those with SEN through effective use of questioning, utilising resources in the classroom and ensuring they are focusing on the
learning, not task completion.

consider the benefits of playing number games for children's learning in mathematics and also in supporting their acquisition of
social skills such as turn-taking. This will be a practical session in which we experience a range of number games suitable for children
across the primary phase and share ideas for managing games with small groups. The ways in which we adapt popular number
games in the workshop will be transferable to others that you are familiar with.
Attendees will be provided with an overview of each game and the resources to play some of them in school the next day. Please
come along ready to have a go!

Ah, Aha and Haha - Putting the Creativity (and fun) into Maths
                                    An evening with…

                                Rob Eastaway

  Session Overview:
Ask an adult to think back to the maths they learned at school, and very few will recall a subject
that was creative. Yet maths can be one of the most creative subjects in the curriculum.
Drawing on his experience as an author, presenter and parent, Rob concentrates on the side of
maths that can be surprising, engaging and beautiful for children and adults of all abilities.
With examples of games, curiosities and mathematical "magic", this workshop is about
enriching teachers' own view of maths, as well as offering numerous ideas that can be
  transferred straight to the classroom.
