Tuia - Encounters 250
Aotearoa New Zealand marks 250 years since the onshore encounters between Māori and
Pākehā, with a national commemoration called Tuia – Encounters 250 (Tuia).
Tuia reflects on the extraordinary voyaging traditions and cultures of Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa (the
Pacific), the exceptional feats of Pacific voyagers, their mātauranga (knowledge), innovation and
non-instrument navigation prowess and their decision to settle in Aotearoa many generations
ago.

Tuia 250 ki Taitokerau
Tuia 250 ki Taitokerau is a series of events, programmes and activities being held in the region
as part of the nationwide Tuia 250 programme. It is being organised by the Te Au Mārie Trust,
one of 4 landfall site trusts, alongside partners and community groups who are also making
their own contributions to the national Tuia 250 commemorations. Tuia te muka
A focus of Tuia 250 ki Taitokerau is taking the opportunity to reclaim and share histories
specific to this place. We are excited to share the untold stories, to balance the narratives and
acknowledge our collective histories.
                                                                                                     tangata ki uta.
Oral histories have already been documented and will continue to be documented. These will
provide a rich legacy that retell of our voyaging and navigation, tārai waka (waka carving), our Weaving people together
navigators, our rangatira (leaders), of first encounters with tauiwi and our collective histories.

Derek Kawiti, a Victoria University Senior Lecturer in Computational Design in the School of
Architecture and researcher for the MacDiarmid Institute is leading a team using 3D printing
technologies to ‘replicate’ the wa’a at full scale. The wa’a was scanned in 2018 and the digital
model was made available with permission by its Hawaiian traditional owners. The team is using
this data to create printed models using a composite wood-based polymer bio-plastic. The
project provides an interesting tension around the use of data, large scale digital fabrication in
relation to customary indigenous frameworks.
