      Dev authority for Anandpur Sahib to be set up
           o   Punjab government announced that a development authority for
               Anandpur Sahib will be set up in the wake of the 550th birth anniversary
               of Guru Nanak Dev in November 2019.
           o   The development authority would be formed to plan and execute the
               development plans in a systematic and planned manner.
           o   The authority would be established on the pattern of Dera Baba Nanak
               Development Authority.

   61.7 mn affected due to extreme weather
           o   As per the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), earthquakes
               and tsunamis accounted for most of the 10,373 lives lost in disasters in
               2018.
           o   It also said that weather events accounted for most of 61.7 million people
               affected by natural hazards.
           o   The country most affected by disasters was India, where there were 23.9
               million people hit, followed by the Philippines and then China.

      e-Courts services through CSCs launched
           o   The Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice, decided to deliver
               e-Courts services to the litigant public through the 2 lakh Common Service
               Centres (CSCs).
           o   No fee will be charged from the customers for e-Courts related services
               delivered through CSCs.
           o   The aim of the e-Courts is to provide efficient and time-bound access to
               the Courts services to the litigant public.

      National Declamation Contest inaugurated
           o   Union Minister Col. Rajyavardhan Rathore inaugurated the National
               Declamation Contest on Patriotism and Nation Building on 24 January
               2019.
           o   The contest is organised by Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS).

o   The aim of the Contest is to further strengthen the spirit of Nationalism
               and Patriotic feeling amongst youth and masses for wholehearted
               participation in nation-building.

      Technology Mission Centre launched by govt
           o   Union Minister Harsh Vardhan launched three important centre’s set up
               by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) at IIT Madras on 25
               January 2019.
           o   The first one is the 'DST –IITM Solar Energy Harnessing Centre'.
           o   The second centre is the 'DST-IITM Water –IC for SUTRAM of EASY
               WATER'.
           o   The third centre is the 'Testbed on Solar thermal desalination solutions'.

      Trade through the e-NAM portal started
           o   The first inter-State trade on e-Nam portal was carried between Andhra
               Pradesh and Telangana on 19 January 2019.
           o   The trade happened between a farmer from Gadwal mandi in Telangana
               State, who sold 8.46 quintal of groundnut to a trader in Kurnool, Andhra
               Pradesh.
           o   The e-NAM is a pan-India electronic trading portal to connect with the
               existing wholesale market.

      India Heritage Walk Festival to be held in Feb

o   The second edition of the India Heritage Walk Festival (IHWF) will be
               held across 37 cities in February 2019.
           o   It will be organised by the UNESCO and Sahapedia.
           o   The IHWF will be inaugurated with a heritage walk in Ahmedabad on 2
               February 2019.
           o   The primary objective of the festival is to widen access to various aspects
               of India's tangible and intangible heritage.

      India, SA seal 3-year strategic programme
           o   On 25 January 2019, India and South Africa signed a three-year strategic
               programme to further boost cooperation in a number of key areas.
           o   The strategic programme will cover cooperation in a range of areas
               including defence and security, trade and investment, the blue economy,
               tourism, IT, and agriculture.
           o   South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa will be the chief guest at the
               Republic Day.

      Karthyani appointed as Goodwill Ambassador
           o   The Commonwealth of Learning appointed 96-year-old Karthyayani
               Amma as their goodwill ambassador on 22 January 2019.
           o   She bagged the first rank in the ‘Aksharalaksham’ literacy exam conducted
               by the Kerala government in November 2018.

      I&B Ministry to facilitate JIFF 2019
           o   Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will extend support for
               organizing the second Jharkhand International Film Festival (JIFF) at
               Ranchi in Jharkhand from 1 February 2019.
           o   The objective of promoting the Festival is to encourage states that have
               showcased the potential of promoting cinema.
           o   The support is will be provided under the Grants in Aid scheme.

      NIC hosted conclave on New Technologies
           o   Technical Advisory Group (TAG) of National Informatics Centre (NIC)
               organised a two-day 'Technology Conclave' on 22 and 23 January 2019.
           o   The theme of the conclave was 'Technologies for NextGen Governance'.
           o   The technologies covered included Big Data and Advanced Analytics,
               Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Cloud Native
               Scalable Applications etc.

      Satellites successfuly launched by ISRO
           o   India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C44) successfully injected
               Microsat-R and Kalamsat-V2 satellites into their designated orbits.

o   The satellites were launched on 24 January 2019 from Satish Dhawan
               Space Centre, Sriharikota.
           o   Microsat-R is a defence application satellite.
           o   It is the first Indian satellite which was placed by ISRO in a low orbit at an
               altitude of 274 km

      Krishna Sobti passed away
           o   Legendary Hindi writer Krishna Sobti passed away on 25 January 2019.
           o   She won Sahitya Akademi Award and Jnanpith award.
           o   She is considered as the Grande Dame of Hindi literature.
           o   'Zindaginama' is considered to be one of her most acclaimed works.
           o   Some of her celebrated works include 'Daar Se Bichhudi’, 'Dil-o-Danish',
               'Badalom ke Ghere', and 'Surajmukhi Andhere Ke' among others.

      Successful Flight Test of LRSAM
           o   The Long Range Surface-to-Air Missile (LRSAM) was successfully test
               fired from INS Chennai on 24 January 2019.
           o   LRSAM was jointly developed by Defence Research and Development
               Organisation (DRDO) and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) for the Indian
               Navy.
           o   LRSAM will help in enhancing the Navy's anti-air warfare capability.

   National Voters’ Day: 25 January
           o   National Voters' Day (NVD) is observed in India every year on 25 January
               2019.
           o   NVD is celebrated to mark the Foundation day of Election Commission of
               India, which was established on 25th January 1950.
           o   The aim of the day is to encourage, facilitate and maximize the enrollment,
               especially for the new voters.
           o   'My Vote Matters', a Quarterly Magazine will also be launched on the
               occasion.

      Tribunal to decide ban on insurgents
           o   On 24 January 2019, the Ministry of Home Affairs reconstituted a tribunal
               to adjudicate matters related to the extension of the ban imposed on eight
               insurgent groups in Manipur for involvement in unlawful activities.
           o   The tribunal has been set up under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention)
               Act, 1967.
           o   It will be headed by Delhi High Court's judge Justice G.S. Sistani.

      Sultan Abdullah named as King of Malaysia
           o   Sultan Abdullah was elected as Malaysia's new King on 24 January
               2019, following the abdication of Sultan Muhammad V in January 2019.
           o   He is the ruler of the Malaysia state of Pahang.
           o   He will have a five-year term.

      Conference on Agriculture held in New Delhi
           o   National Conference on Agriculture for Zaid Campaign-2019 was
               organised by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare in New Delhi
               on 24 January 2019.
           o   Special sessions were held to discuss strategy for potential crops
               and irrigation potential for zaid season.
           o   It was also said that the total Foodgrain production in the country is
               estimated at 284.83 million tonnes in 2017-18.

      Ronojoy Dutta named new Indigo CEO
           o   InterGlobe Aviation Limited, which owns and operates low-cost airline
               IndiGo, appointed Ronojoy Dutta as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
               on 24 January 2019.
           o   He joined IndiGo airlines in December 2018 as the principal consultant.
           o   He was the President of United Airlines.
           o   Indigo airlines also appointed M. Damodaran as an independent Non-
               Executive Director and the Chairman of the board.

      Government launches new norms for JSS

o   The government of India unveiled new guidelines for Jan Shikshan
               Sansthans (JSS) on 24 January 2019.
           o   The new norms are expected to help identify and promote traditional skills
               in a district.
           o   It will also help in the training of trainers to develop skills through
               National Skills Training Institutes.
           o   JSS comes under the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship.
