Prayer and Reflection
APOSTLESHIP OF PRAYER, ST. JOSAPHAT CATHEDRAL, EDMONTON
AGE: All ages.
DESCRIPTION: Members recite daily the Prayer of Surrender, the Morning
Offering, and the Consecration to Mary. Also, members receive a weekly email
with a list of intentions. One “Our Father,” “Rejoice, Mother of God,” and “Glory
be” is offered for all prayer requests, and all intentions are remembered at daily
Divine Liturgy. Members are encouraged to approach Confession on a monthly
basis and to receive Holy Communion on Sundays, Feast Days, and first Fridays
or Saturdays of each month.

DESCRIPTION: Meet with other parents for friendship and faith sharing. Learn

personal growth. Share parenting tips and challenges with other parents raising
their children in the faith.

PRESCHOOL PROGRAM, ST. JOSAPHAT CATHEDRAL, EDMONTON
AGE: Preschool children, age 3 to 6.
DESCRIPTION: Due to the current crisis, the program has been suspended.
On-line resources are being made available to parents directly by catechists and
via our website. Parents will be notified once it is safe to resume in-person
classes.

                   Sacramental Preparation
INFANT BAPTISM PREPARATION, ST. JOSAPHAT CATHEDRAL,

AGE: Parents and godparents, preparing for the baptism of their child
(godchild).
DESCRIPTION: Parents are requested to attend a special Baptismal Prepara-
tion Session, together with their selected godparents. A preparation booklet is
provided. During the session, the Mysteries of Baptism, Chrismation and Eucha-
rist are explained. Also, an explanation of the baptismal services is provided.
Various materials are recommended to parents, who as the prime catechists, are
responsible for raising their children in the Christian faith.

DESCRIPTION: Information for new parents and parents-to-be regarding their
duties in raising their child in the Ukrainian Catholic Church. Sessions vary in
length according to the parent’s background and existing knowledge.

and provide the opportunity to learn more about Mother Mary, who has set an
example that all girls and young woman should strive to follow.

ST. SOPHIA’S YOUTH
AGE: 9-14
DESCRIPTION: A group that aims to extend learning beyond children’s Sunday
school to provide younger youth with a place to ask questions and learn about
the faith. This group will allow for children to create lasting friendships within the
church while making deeper connections with their church.
DATES & TIMES: Start date TBD. Once a month on Sunday after liturgy with
additional dates for external activities to be announced throughout the year.
Refer to the Church bulletin for meeting dates and times.

potential use of the church’s multipurpose room in future.

CATHOLIC ESSAY CONTEST, KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
AGE: High school - Grades 10 to 12
            DATES & TIMES: October 1 to December 1, 2020.
            DESCRIPTION: Sponsored by the Father Hannas council of the
            Knights of Columbus (St. Basil Parish), students are asked to write
            an essay between 500-750 words. The theme this year: Discuss how
            trusting in God during a difficult time has helped you or someone you
            know find the strength and hope to endure it. Consider especially
those times when it was a challenge to understand why something was happen-
ing. Consider also sharing any lessons about faith and hope you or someone you
know may have learned from this experience.

            DESCRIPTION: In order to combat the secularization of one of the
            most holy days of the Catholic calendar, the celebration of the birth
            of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Knights of Columbus
            St. Basil’s council sponsor an annual “Keep Christ in Christmas
            international poster contest. Our aim is to allow young people to en-
gage their creative talents and imaginations while understanding the true, spiritu-
al meaning of Christmas.

Dr. Matt Hoven: Faith and Hockey: Connections and Pathways - There are many
historical and contemporary connections between our national winter sport and
the Christian faith. This session will explore some major connections and then
offer men ways to engage hockey (and all sport) with the mind of Christ.
Dr. Paul Flaman: Transgenderism and the Catholic Church - We will examine
transgenderism including sex-hormone therapy and surgery, both of adults and
minors, in the light of scientific studies, human experience, related Catholic teach-
ing and health care ethical principles.
Rt. Rev. Fr. Stephen Wojcichowsky: Wholeness of Being: Thoughts Matter. We
will be introduced to ways in which we can discern thoughts that cause us to be
distant from God and cooperate with the grace of God to reduce, redirect and re-
move certain thoughts which in turn opens us to God’s presence.

ONLINE TRAINING FOR SOLEMN HOLY COMMUNION TEACHERS
AGE: Adult - Those preparing children for the reception of Solemn Holy com-
munion and first Confession.
DESCRIPTION: In this online class which you can do at your own pace when it
is convenient for you, we take you through the required educational outcomes
for children preparing for first confession and solemn holy communion (See the
printable booklet on the website). In a three session training series, we provide
catechetical instruction, resources, practical examples and extra materials that
will enhance your religious education. You will receive a certificate of
completion at the end of the course.

ST. JOSAPHAT CATHEDAL CHOIR, ST. JOSAPHAT CATHEDRAL,
EDMONTON
AGE: Children, Teens and Adults.
DESCRIPTION: Under the direction of Denise Lucyshyn, we sing at the 9:30
am Divine Liturgy (English) on the first Sunday of each month; and at the 11:00
am Divine Liturgy (Ukrainian) on two Sundays of the month.
DATES & TIMES: Normally, rehearsals take place once or twice a month, Sep-
tember to June, on Sundays at 7:00 pm or Sunday morning, prior to singing the
11:00 am Divine Liturgy. Due to the current crisis, all rehearsals and choir sing-
ing have been suspended temporarily. Choir members will be directly notified
when refearsals will resume.

UKRAINIAN CHOIR, ST. GEORGE'S CHURCH, EDMONTON
AGE: Adult, Young adult
DESCRIPTION: Directed by Irena Tarnawsky, the choir sings twice a month at
the Sunday 9:30am. Divine Liturgy. Occasionally, we sing the Noon Liturgy.
The choir organizes Goodwill performances for Christmas, and other
occasions. New members are encouraged to join!
Due to the pandemic, and following Bishop David's directions, all rehearsals and
choir singing have been suspended until further notice. Choir members will be
notified when rehearsals resume.
DATES AND TIMES: Sept. - June. Practices are held Wednesday evenings at
7:15pm

10:30 LITURGY CHOIR - ST. STEPHEN’S, CALGARY
AGE: Adults
DESCRIPTION: This choir sings at the 10:30 am Divine Liturgy and occasions
such as carol festivals, banquets, weddings, baptisms, etc., once all COVID
restrictions have been removed.
DATES: Zoom practices on various Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm. Sept. - June.

DESCRIPTION: Sing, Learn and Socialize!
Learn how to sing the liturgy and other Ukrainian hymns and folk songs. Explore
the history of music, and have fun at our safe social gatherings! There will be in
person sessions, as well as zoom lessons.
DATES: Rehearsals every Friday.
