MISSION STATEMENT
Our Purpose
The Bats exists to be a place which enhances people’s lives by bringing AFL football and mate-ship
together better than any other club in the Australia.
Our Vision
We will be the benchmark football club in Sydney with the best club culture in Australia.
The Bats will be a place where people can learn the basics of AFL as well as play and succeed at the
highest level. We will do this by creating a club culture which is based on professionalism, integrity, fun,
focus and mate ship.
Our Strategy is Culture before Football. This will make us successful on and off the field.
You are a better footballer and a better person after spending time at the Bats.
Our Values
Our Culture is the most important aspect of the club.
Club Values
• Positive Talk - On and off the field AT ALL TIMES. Encourage your mates and lift them up with you.
• Respect - For all players, officials and supporters of our Club and those we compete against.
• Inclusiveness - Get around new players and make them feel welcome. Whether you’ve been at the
Club for 5 years or 1 session, we are all striving toward the same common goal.
Playing Values
• Hardness
• Relentless
• Unified
• Discipline
• Integrity

KEY STRATEGIES
How do we do it here?
The ongoing charter of Committee, Coaches & Leadership Group
1. “Run by the players for the players” – need to ensure a large part of the Committee are current
players to ensure ownership & relevance of club strategy to the playing group.
2. First night of a new bat they are out the front of the group for introduction & welcome.
3. “Welcome to the Bats” from every existing player on someone’s first night.
4. “Find 5” after every drill as an ongoing principle.
5. Integration of the grades at training and wherever possible to ensure guys know each other and feel
connected.
6. Thursday night selections at Saturday night post-game celebrations at the Bat Cave (LBH).
7. All players must contribute to the Volunteer Roster.
8. No player payments.
9. Non-playing Coaches only.
10. We focus on the little things – small pieces of positive recognition and gratitude (i.e. Banners, Awards,
Congratulatory Announcements) no matter how small.
11. Leaders are always integrating new bats quickly, spending time with new Bats and proactively
welcoming partners, families, non-playing mates and Past Players at social functions.
12. People are accepted by who the are as a person as opposed to their football ability.
13. Leaders are always talking about the club values and demonstrating why they are so important to who
we are as a club.
14. The Social Calendar and participation in social functions is core to the Bats.
15. Our Old Boys/Past Players network is uniquely important to us, so must be a focus.

2012 CLUB TRAINING
During the pre-season and regular season training sessions are held every Tuesday & Thursday night and
commence at 6:15pm.
The pre-season training venue is: Bat and Ball Oval, Cleveland Street, Moore Park.
During the regular season all training sessions will be at Trumper Oval, Glenmore Road, Paddington.
Any changes to these arrangements will be communicated to the playing group via the Yahoo email.
If you are unable to make a training session please contact your respective coach - Daniel Lynch 0413 164
448, Andrew Christie 0433 288 340, Justin Kurenda 0415 672 145, or Brett Wylie 0425 205 647. It is
unacceptable to miss a training session and not notify one of the senior coaches.
Club training singlets are compulsory and must be worn at every Thursday night training session.
IMPORTANT NOTES
• Make sure you warm up before each session. This will be done as a group. If however, you are late you
are required to do 2 full laps and stretches before joining the main group.
• If you have an injury, make sure you tell your coach and then see the trainers for treatment – ICE it after
training (and/or matches) – Don’t put it off for later, it may be the difference between playing or not.
• Those players not training due to injuries are expected to attend training to receive medical treatment.
• Injured players will also be given rehabilitation programmes which they will work on during training
nights away from the main group.
• Players leaving the ground for any reason during training MUST see the coach before doing so.
• When training is finished WARM DOWN. Do exactly as you warmed up. DON’T TAKE SHORT CUTS –
Preventing injury is better than cure.
• Strong performance is reflective of a strong training ethic.

UTSAFC RULES AND STANDARDS
Respect
It is a privilege to play at this football club. That privilege comes with a series of responsibilities and
expectations that go with being a UTS Bats player, particularly after the game whilst socialising with team
mates and the wider community.
Remember at all times that you are a representative of the UTS Australian Football Club. Accept this
responsibility and conduct yourself at all times in a manner that brings credit to yourself and the Club.
Obscene language and anti-social behaviour are totally unacceptable and simply will not be tolerated.
Everyone socialising within the Club is doing so for the same reason – to have a good time! Please ensure
that your behaviour does not have a negative impact on others.
Drug Policy
The Club has adopted a zero tolerance policy in relation to illicit drugs at social functions. This includes all
post-match presentations as well as the Club’s marque events such as the annual Presentation night.
The Committee has resolved to take a strong stance on these matters and is prepared to take action
against those who are not willing to comply with these policies.
The basic principle of respect dominates everything we do at the UTSAFC. Respect for the Club, respect for
the coaches and committee members and respect for your fellow team mates. This is also extends to the
facilities, equipment, intellectual property, change rooms and The Light Brigade Hotel.
Club Rules
Every player at the Club needs to know them, as they are integral to our success!
1. Inclusiveness – Welcome, support and embrace new players, family and friends into the Bats family.
2. Respect – All coaches, players, supporters, umpires and opposition.
3. Provide Help – Do your bit to help. This club is run by the players for the players.
4. Respect Club Property – Treat all club property with respect. If you’re the last one to use it, put it
away!
5. Names – Get to know ALL players names… one club…all mates. After all training drills find five
players and address them by name.
6. Punctuality – Arrive on time for training and games. Communicate with coaches if you’re late,
unavailable or injured.
7. Be Involved – Experience and enjoy the best Club in Sydney. The more you put in, the more you will
get out of it.

All emails sent to utsafc_players@yahoo.com.au by current or recent club members must only be sent by
being addressed as “BCC”. No emails are to be addressed “To” the group email address. This avoids
everyone getting out of office replies ,etc.
Most information you may need is available from the Bats website or from your respective coach/
teammates. Before sending an email to ALL, ask yourself if it is appropriate or necessary for the 350-450
people on the list to receive.
In recent times we are using Facebook to communicate to members and supporters. We have sponsors
and a number of female supporters following our Facebook site. Anything that is offensive or tarnishes the
clubs name or the AFL will NOTbe tolerated and action will be taken against members in breach of this.
If you send an email, or email response, which is considered in violation of the above policy, you will be
contacted by a member of the committee. For serious indiscretions, you may be removed from the email
list completely.
There are more appropriate (and effective) means of communicating between members for social/non-
official correspondence, such as:
•Emails directed only to specific people.
•Facebook – become friends with Trumper Bat and find other Bats members through there.
•Twitter – follow @TheTrumperBat for all Bat tweets.
To clarify the Group Email Policy: Selling Goods, Cars, Washing Machines, advertising for
flatmates/apartments is acceptable. This will be referred to as BatBay®.
It is forbidden to use the group for:
•Spam
•Links to videos or websites which are not aligned to appropriate club communication
•Offensive material (sexist, racist or inappropriate language – this includes the Bats Facebook page)
•Jokes
•Banter (which would be inappropriate for club sponsors to read)
•Unapproved Advertising which is other than from Club Sponsors
•REPLY ALL responses (including lifts to a game)
•Requests for contact directed at one person
Contact Luke Trimboli or Simon Rabbitt if you are in any doubt regarding the status of your email address
and your address will be added.
The reach of the group email extends far and wide and includes sponsors, support staff and the UTS Union
and as a consequence it is important that it is not abused.

2012 MATCH DAY STANDARDS
ATTIRE
All players are required to wear the UTS Bats club polo shirt to and from the venue.
TIMING
On match days all players selected are to report to the match venue at the nominated report time, this will
be set when teams are sent out via the Bats yahoo email. As a general rule, the report time is 90 minutes
prior to the first bounce.
There are no excuses for being late. Allow yourself sufficient travel time. “Stuck in traffic” or “I couldn’t
find the ground” are not excuses. That is simply a sign of inadequate preparation.
For Reserve, Third & Fourth Grade sides: after the game – stay as a team, enjoy a drink & something to eat
and watch the Senior Grade game for at least a quarter. However it is preferred that you stay for the
entire game.
KEY POINTS
The pre game meeting will occur after half time of the previous game.
Players must have all their strapping completed before the main team meeting. There are no excuses.
Arrive at the ground early enough so that you don’t put yourself under unnecessary time pressure.
THE BASICS
On match day get the basics right. Don’t forget your boots, socks, shorts and mouthguard.
Present yourself in the right condition to play your best footy. Players who show up not ready to play do
nothing more than display a lack of commitment to their own game and a lack of respect for both the Club
and their team mates.
Prepare yourself for the game in your own individual way but remember to be mindful of others in their
preparation.
POST-MATCH CELEBRATIONS
Following each game the post match presentations will be held at 7:00pm at the Light Brigade Hotel. The
presentations offer the opportunity to not only recognise the day’s best players from the respective
matches, but to get to know each other. Particularly for those not from Sydney, the Bats are a family away
from home.
It’s important that all players attend presentations and support their team mates. We celebrate wins
together and stick together after a loss.

2012 MATCH DAY DUTIES
SUPPORT YOUR MATES
Match day is more than simply playing your game. It’s also about supporting your mates and that support
comes in the form of MATCH DAY DUTIES. It doesn’t matter what grade you play, throughout the season
you will be called upon to goal umpire, run the boundary, run water, man the canteen, assist with the
timekeeping, or running the scoreboard.
The Leadership Group will nominate players for Duties each Friday before a game. Once notified, it is your
responsibility to ensure you fulfil that duty. If circumstances at the time mean that you can’t fulfil your duty
for whatever reason, then it is your responsibility to find someone else to cover you. It isn’t acceptable to
just ignore your responsibility. This is not what the club is about and not what it has been built upon, help
out a mate!
The Club operates at its best when everybody does their bit!
Remember that it is a club run BY THE PLAYERS FOR THE PLAYERS!
Requirements for Match Day Duties
Some match day duties have specific requirements set by Sydney AFL that we need to comply with.
•WATER RUNNER must be wearing runners (bare foot or thongs are not acceptable), Bats Shorts, Bats Polo
& Blue Bib (found in Guernsey Bag for each team).
•COACH RUNNER must be wearing Runners & Florescent Yellow Bats Runners’ Shorts & Shirt.
•GOAL UMPIRE must be noting the scores for both teams and confer with other Goal Umpire at each
break. It is also required that Flags are used when there is a score at either end.
•BOUNDARY UMPIRE must be wearing runners, Bats Shorts, and White Shirt (found in Guernsey Bag for
each team), and have a whistle.
•TIMEKEEPER (Div 1 – Div 4) needs to set the clock to 22 minutes with no time on. From here, your main
job is to keep track of the scores for both teams, then confer with Goal Umpires and Scoreboard Operator
at each break.
•TIMEKEEPER (Premier Div) has separate roles for home and away games.
• For HOME games: the timekeeper is in charge of the clock, which is set to 20 minutes PLUS
time on. The clock stops when:
• The ball exits the field of play (out of bounds, out on the full, goal is kicked – only when
goal umpire signals). Time starts again when the ball is entered into the field of play
(I.e. when the ruck men tap the ball).
• The umpire blows time on. Start time again when the umpire blows whistle again.
• For AWAY games: the timekeepers primary role is to keep track of the scores for both teams,
then confer with Goal Umpires and Scoreboard Operator at each break.

SELECTION GUIDELINES
In order of priority:

• Players will be selected in the position/team that the coaching group believe will make our
sides as strong as possible to beat our opposition.
• Players that attend training or can give good reason for missing the odd session.
• Players who give club support (I.e. involved in match day duties).
• Rotation of the lower grades playing group so that all registered players are given a game.
Whilst we cannot ensure everyone gets a game every week, we do try to ensure players in
the lower grades are given an even amount of game time. This includes selection in the
Greens vs Blacks games.
N.B. The Senior Coaching group may exercise their discretion when selecting teams that can override points
3-5. If you do have any questions or concerns regarding selections, please speak directly to the Leadership
Group and/or the coaching group. Above all, we want our club to be transparent regarding any issues that
arise during the year.

INJURY MANAGEMENT POLICY
The Club has an established arrangement with long-time Bats supporters Sydney SportsMed to cover
injury management in 2012. All injuries that require further treatment must be reported to Sydney
SportsMed. A weekly injury register will be compiled and each Tuesday morning that list will be sent to the
coaches to advise them of the Club’s injury situation.
It is important that all players report injuries. If you require physiotherapy for any injuries sustained on the
weekend, please contact Sydney SportsMed and ask for our head physiotherapist, Justine McCarthy.
The Sydney SportsMed Clinic is located at:
Suite 2
9-13 Young Street
Sydney
P: 02 9251 0822
All players should have received a membership card to Sydney SportsMed that entitles you to a 15%
discount on your physiotherapy needs.
If you have sought treatment earlier in the day please report that via email at
physio1@sydneysportsmed.com.au so that you can be added to the injury register.
In your email describe the injury, its severity and the treatment that has been recommended. Whilst you’re
free to seek such treatment, it is preferable that all treatment be conducted through Sydney SportsMed to
enable accurate records to be maintained.

UTS BATS CLUB SONG
(To the tune of The Ants Go Marching In)
The UTS Bats won again today
HOORAY, HOORAY
We proved that we’re the better side
TODAY, TODAY
We knocked ‘em down, we drank their blood
And then we rubbed them in the mud
We’ll be Victors in 2012
They’ve never seen a team like us
BEFORE, BEFORE
When we get down we get back up and
FIGHT SOME MORE
Around the ground and through the sky
The Bats are always flying high
We’ll be Victors in 2012
