15ST. JOHN’S AND AREA
St. John’s and Area
Being the most easterly point in North America has its advantages. For starters, we have
our very own time zone. In Canada, the sun rises first on Newfoundland and Labrador.
We’re the closest province to Europe, which means
St. John’s harbour is a safe haven for transatlantic travellers
and a bustling commercial port. We’re the youngest—
and coolest—province in Canada, home to the
oldest street in North America, and we’ve been
welcoming adventurers from all corners of
the world for over 500 years. A city rich
in culture, we honour tradition while
embracing eclectic sophistication.
When in St. John’s, you hear your
fair share of tall tales and yarns, and
that’s not all. As you walk through
the winding alleyways of our
vibrant downtown, you’ll encounter
fashionistas, chefs, musicians, and more,
all elements of a colourful tapestry of
experiences unfolding before your eyes.
Thirsting for adventure? It’s easily quenched
by skirting the dramatic coastline on foot,
or enjoying a day on a boat on the bay having
close encounters with humpback whales, puffins, or
icebergs (and maybe all three!).
Spectacular vistas, extraordinary culinary pleasures, and unique architecture are just tiny
slices of an urban experience that will feel like no other. But it’s the colourful characters
who are most memorable, in a place where strangers quickly become friends, and the local
vernacular will delight and puzzle you all at once. Performances abound: sing along. Toe
tapping is welcome.
Colourful experiences. Colourful characters. Colourful encounters. Make your destination
St. John’s—you’ll be glad you did.

destinationstjohns.com 23OUR FOOD
Newfound cuisine influenced by a storied past.
As national and international
publications and their contributing
writers have attested with
exuberance, the food scene
in St. John’s is a beacon for
food lovers and we have the
delicacies of the land, the sea
and the talented chefs and
kitchen brigades to thank for this.
At the root of this food story is the
place itself. Being an island in the North
Atlantic meant we were pioneers in the 100-mile diet.
Thousands of coastal communities were only accessible by
boat until 60 years ago, some still are. The fishery was the
main source of income for most communities. Families used
what was on hand. Root vegetables grow readily here; wild
berries are plentiful, as are rabbit, moose, partridge, seabird
and, of course, fish. And when we say fish, we mean cod.
Cod was king, is king.Knowing where
your food comes
from is playing an
important role for
many in choosing
where and what to
eat. Our chefs are
working one on one
with the purveyors of
food to create today’s
dining experience, ranging
from eclectic sophistication to
rustic fare. The simple and staple
ingredients that are the building
blocks of the culinary renaissance are
ever present but are being celebrated
in a different way. Equally as exciting and
interesting for the chefs, is experimenting with the
things that were overlooked as ingredients. In some
cases, literally walked over: sea urchin, whelk, wild
mushrooms and caribou lichen.
Make exploring the varied food and beverage
experiences listed in the guide part of your
travel journey. Enjoy.DINING, PUBS & ENTERTAINMENT
