Watching Ice Melt
Mrs. Willson
When I was growing up, I used to ride to school with my dad. He taught Drama, English, and a few other
subjects at the high school I went to. He was well-loved by students and the other faculty members. He loved
teaching, he loved the kids. He was so great at creating relationships with his students, especially the students
that others seemed to just cast off. They adored him. I often felt proud that he was my Dad and having such a
connection to him made me feel special. I would often hear from other students, “Oh, you’re Mr. Scott’s
daughter? Your dad’s pretty cool.”
I remember on frosty mornings, when the windshield was covered with ice he would sometimes do something
that drove me crazy. Instead of getting out the ice scraper and making short work of the thick frost, he would
back the truck up out of the driveway and park by our fence with the windshield facing East. And then….we
would wait. Yep, we would just sit there. We would sit there and watch the sun melt the ice. The ice would turn
into water that would trickle down the windshield into little pools. Eventually enough of the ice melted and he
would brush it away with the windshield wipers. I would make my huffy teenager breath sounds at him, but he
would just sit there and watch the ice melt. After the third or fourth time he did this, I had had enough. “Why are
we doing this? I need to get to school!” I demanded. Funny, because he needed to do the same thing. He
looked at me and let out a breath of his own. “Emily,” he said, “Sometimes, it’s okay to just sit. You’ll be fine.”
Well, I thought that was absolutely ridiculous! Just sit. Whoever did anything or got anywhere by just sitting
there? No one, that’s who! When my younger brother started riding with us a few years later, he did the same
huffy teenager breath that I had done years before. However, he started to become vocal about it the first time
it happened. “Ben,” I said. “It won’t matter what you say, Dad is just going to keep sitting here until the ice
melts.” I told him it was going to happen regardless of whether he threw a fit or not. Well, the year after I
graduated from high school, I heard all about my other sibling being annoyed about sitting in the truck watching
the sun melt the ice too.
I truly love helping our staff, students, and parents, but often things can get really busy. Sometimes when I
need to just take a breath, I will just tiptoe into the back of a classroom, take a seat, and watch the ice melt.
Amazing things happen here at Excelsior every day, but none of those amazing things happen fast. Often, we
find ourselves watching and waiting for the ice to melt. Educating children is not a trendy experience or one
that happens in an internet minute. Teaching your children how to read, about tsunamis, how to do long
division, why Rome fell, how to get along with others, and how to just be an Excelsior student takes a lot of
repetition and a lot of time. Our educators almost never experience the instant gratification that our society
knows so well. However, at the beginning of the year, we pull our truck out of the driveway, point it east, and
watch the ice melt. Even though it’s not a fast process, we know that with hard work, patience, diligence, love,
and your support eventually we will see the wonderful gains that make what we do worth it. An educator’s
greatest joy is seeing that what they did had an impact on a student and because of their influence, that
student’s life is better.
I have thought a lot about the ice melting experience with my dad. Why did he do that? Was he trying to teach
me patience? Did he just not want to go to school? Did he want to save money on buying a new ice
scraper? Why? Well, regardless of why he did it, I learned that some things in life are worth waiting for. Your
students are one of them!

The COVID-19 school manual was updated in December. To read the manual, click here. To read the summary, click here. TLDR: If exposure to a positive case occurred at school, and both parties were wearing masks, the exposed party does not need to quarantine unless they have symptoms of covid. Watch for symptoms for 14 days. If either person was NOT wearing a mask at the time of exposure, the close contact must quarantine for 10 days (without testing). You can get tested on day 7 (not sooner) with a PCR or rapid antigen test, and end quarantine after a negative test result is provided to the school. In either case of exposure, watch for symptoms for 14 days. The school fee schedule and spend plan will be discussed at the next board meeting. Public comment is welcome. The board meeting will be held on January 20 at 5:30 pm.

Attendance process during the pandemic-
how does it work, what do I do?
If your student is online for the whole term- their attendance is
counted by participation in classes
If your student is ‘regular’ sick or absent- a parent needs to excuse
the absence by phone or email as usual
If your student is quarantined by the school or health
department- it is automatically counted as a school excused absence
and you do not need to call or email to excuse them
If your student self-quarantines (a family decision)- you need to
excuse these absences by calling or emailing, AND let us know it is for self-
