• The other 50% will be either History or Geography.
Humanities (Social Studies/ Geography) Humanities (Social Studies (History)

SOCIAL STUDIES
SS SECTION A
SS SECTION B
• DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EXPRESS AND N(A) IS:
    • Part (a) requires only ONE answer
    • Part (b) does not require them to
      draw a conclusion
QUALITIES OF LEVELS OF RESPONSE
MARKING
• Used in both SS and HY.
• Levels are based on quality of answers not quantity of examples cited
• SBCS: Levels are not always the same even for the same type of questions: depends on
  source difficulty/ richness
• SRQ : Levels are fixed and can be attained by writing to that level
SAMPLE QUESTION (O LEVELS, 2018)
• 1a) What is the cartoonist’s
  message? Explain your
  answer.
• Command words: What,
  message
• Skill tested: Inference focus on
  the intent of the cartoonist
SAMPLE LORMS (INTERNAL)
1a) What is the cartoonist’s message? Explain your answer.
• Level 1: Describes Source with no valid message
• E.g. The message is that there are many different people queuing for the same thing; a value
  meal from McDonald’s
• Level 2: Valid interpretation but not detecting the main message
• E.g. The message is that globalisation has caused foods like McDonald’s to become very
  popular + evidence
• Level 3: Main message of the cartoonist
• E.g. The message is that globalization of food culture has a positive impact on society.
STUDENT RESPONSE:
• Message: The message is that
globalization of food culture has a
  positive impact on society.
• Evidence: Consumption of the same
food (McDonald’s) by people of race/
  nationality/ socio-economic status
• Explanation: MNCs bringing in their
food has led to people of diverse
backgrounds to enjoy the same foods.
HOW TO HELP MY CHILD?
• Cultivate an interest in societal events: even sensationalised events serve a learning
point: e.g. passing of Aloysius Pang → role of NS → role of government →citizens’ rights
 and responsibilities (SS)
• Point out interesting editorial cartoons to them: every cartoon can be interpreted and
just asking them what they think its saying, gets them to infer rather than describe
• Encourage them to be engaged in class: ask questions about their learning, keep up
to task with assignments and share with the teacher during lessons about other relevant
examples they have learnt beyond the coursebook
PERSONAL REFLECTION
• ATTITUDE AND TIME ARE THE 2 MOST • SOME USEFUL THINGS TO CONSIDER:
CRUCIAL FACTORS IN LEARNING • FLASHCARDS USING QUESTIONS AS ANCHORS
                                           • MNEMONIC DEVICES LIKE ACRONYMS AND MIND
• GOOD NOTES ARE KEY TO LEARNING AND PALACE
REVISITING LEARNED MATERIALS • SPACING OUT OF LEARNING OVER TIME
EXAMPLES
• Flash card question + mnemonics: Leitner’s Spaced Repetition
                                                  Flashcard System
• How do good principles of governance help a
 country to progress
   • Leadership is key + +
   • Ensure a stake for everyone ++
   • Anticipate change and stay relevant ++
   • Deserving is recognised and rewarded under
     meritocracy ++
THE MYTH OF TIME Notes,
