You must complete the entire course (including the final exam) to earn a passing grade.
Grades are maintained via the Canvas grade book and are updated weekly. It is
suggested that you routinely check your scores and notify me immediately if you have
any questions. On the left side of the Canvas window (the Navigation bar), there is a
“Grades” link. By clicking on this link, you can view your grades. Do not track the grade
by points. All of your course requirements are graded individually and then weighted to
create a final grade percentage. At the end of the course, the final weighted percentage
is converted to a letter grade using the scale below. It is your responsibility to monitor
your grades/scores in a timely manner.

Course Information
You are required to complete the mandatory introductory
discussion (found in the Canvas Navigation Bar in the
Discussion link, or in the Canvas/Module for Week 1). Students
who do not complete the mandatory introductory discussion by
Thursday, January 14, 2021, will be dropped as a no show. No
     Exceptions! This deadline is firm.

You will need to purchase a code and create a free Cengage
(publisher) account to utilize MindTap (web-based
assignments). In the Canvas Modules, there is a link to the assignment
in MindTap. All MindTap assignments are accessed through Canvas as
they are linked to the Canvas grade book. DO NOT GO TO THE
MINDTAP WEBSITE DIRECTLY TO COMPLETE ASSIGNMENTS. A
subscription can be purchased which will include access to ALL your
MindTap classes. In addition, you can rent the textbook for each
Cengage class for an additional fee with the subscription.

THERE ARE NO MANDATORY ZOOM MEETINGS. (Asynchronous
class). If you need to meet with me via Zoom outside of the
student office hours each week, please contact me and I can
supply you with my personal Zoom room link. You do not need to
activate your video during a Zoom session if you are not comfortable
  doing so.
Please keep in mind that online courses are 24/7, including holidays and
weekends. Succeeding in a course such as this requires self-discipline,
planning, time management, self-direction, communication, and
attention to detail. Many students believe online courses are easy and
do not require a significant time commitment. This is not true. This is
not a self-directed class. Remember that an online class replaces the
traditional classroom face-to-face interaction with weekly assignments
and periodic discussions based upon the material presented. I have
provided a tentative course schedule on the last few pages of this
syllabus to aid you in your time management and quest for success in
the class. I suggest that you keep a calendar of activities to structure
  your time.

Your computer/tablet should have MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and Adobe
software. Microsoft Office 365 is free to all FCC students via your email.
Please activate your SCCCD email account and have reliable Internet
access and the ability to view videos. We will be using
Canvas: https://scccd.instructure.com/ as our class platform. It is
recommended that you purchase the MindTap course materials ASAP
during the first week of class.

There will be deadlines you will need to meet. It is recommended that
you check the Canvas course periodically during the week to ensure
assignments are being completed and if any changes have been made.
I will inform you of any changes via email and an announcement on the
  Canvas home page.

Please read this syllabus in its entirety. If you need clarification,
please email me ASAP. Be proactive! If you have an emergency,
please let me know ahead of time. Waiting until after an assignment is
due is too late. Don’t wait until the last minute as it will spell disaster for
your grade. I want you to succeed! Please contact me with any
problems BEFORE it becomes too late!!

Communication
It is your responsibility to routinely complete assignments and
communicate with me if clarification is needed. If you need to contact
me outside of office hours, you may email me, call my office, or contact
the division and leave a message. Responses will be within 48 hours
(except on Sundays). I am not responsible for lost or misdirected email. I
strongly recommend that you send a copy of your message to yourself
by putting your email address in the “cc:” field. My email address is
karen.dancey@fresnocitycollege.edu. It is also located in the course
Module "Course Information (start here)" in Canvas.

All emails sent to me must include your name at the beginning of the
body of the email. You can utilize your school email or use the inbox in
Canvas. Please make sure all emails contain BT 144 Spring 2021
Class in the subject line and include your name in the subject line
and on the top of the message. If you fail to post the proper subject
line and not include your name at the top of the message, you risk
having your message deleted as junk mail. Please do not use all capital
letters when emailing me. Professionalism and respect should be
    maintained at all times.

Attendance Policy
Each occurrence that you submit an assignment by the deadline, you will
earn 100% attendance. If you submit an assignment within one week after
the due date, you will earn late attendance. If you miss the assignment
deadline completely, you will earn a zero for attendance.

Drop Policy & Deadlines
I do not differentiate between excused and unexcused absences. An
absence is an absence. You may be dropped from the class after
missing two weeks (two assignment deadlines) prior to the final
drop date of Friday, March 12, 2021, unless you have contacted
me prior to the final drop date. It is YOUR responsibility to drop
the course. Do not count on me dropping you. If I do drop you, I
will not complete a reinstatement form. You cannot be dropped after the
final drop date and will therefore earn a letter grade.

You will not earn a “W” on your transcripts if you drop within the first
three weeks of class. Dropping after the first three weeks of class, up to
the ninth week of class, will result in a “W” which does not affect your
GPA.You need to take personal responsibility and decide for yourself
whether or not to remain in the course. To avoid being dropped, please
make sure to submit your assignments by the deadline date. You may
be dropped for not obtaining the course materials by the end of the
third week of class and/or for unsatisfactory progress as deemed by me.
You have 24 hours to add the class. You must appear on my
roster before the next class session or you will not be permitted
   to attend subsequent classes.

Participation and Engagement
You bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, and perspective to class.
Your participation is valuable to your learning, as well as to the learning
of your classmates, and to my growth as an instructor at Fresno City
College; therefore, it is important to all of us that we all come to class
prepared and on time. This will make the learning experience much
more meaningful for everyone and contribute to everyone's successful
   completion of the course.

Come prepared to actively participate in this course. This is the best
way to engage you in learning the material. Watch the recorded videos
to learn about the material being presented that week (some videos
may have additional questions for you to answer), and complete the
assignments by the deadline. Attendance and participation are critical
to successful job performance and is an important part of your grade.
Employers want you to be self-motivated and able to manage your own
   schedule.

Exams and Assignments
Assignments can be found by clicking on the Modules link on the left
side (the Navigation Bar) of the Canvas course home screen.
Assignments may require reading of the eBook, instructor PowerPoint
presentations, taking notes on important information, and completing
exercises in Canvas and MindTap. MindTap assignments are accessed
through Canvas, and not directly from the MindTap website. Please ask
questions if you do not understand what has been covered.
Assignments require the use of a computer. You should note that not all
homework assignments are scored equally. Some assignments require
more work and will result in more homework points. In addition, some
assignments may be due during a holiday week. Please inform me of
   any emergencies that arise.

ANY WORK SUBMITTED THAT IS NOT ASSIGNED BY ME WILL NOT
BE GRADED. You must submit your assignments by the due date
indicated by the instructor. You are encouraged to submit your
assignments early. You will need to utilize a computer with reliable
Internet and access to MindTap to complete assignments. Some
assignments may be submitted directly using the course Canvas site
(and not MindTap). I will provide instructions for using Canvas and
MindTap but it is your responsibility to ask questions for clarification. If
an assignment is to be submitted using the Canvas site, it cannot be
submitted in another format (i.e., email), unless permission is acquired
in advance from me. It is recommended that if you have any login
issues with Canvas or MindTap, it be taken care of immediately.
Technological problems do not excuse you from completing your
assignments. You should have a back-up plan if technological problems
arise. If you need a computer, please see the FCC Student Resources
page on the FCC website on obtaining a loaner computer from the
library: https://www.fresnocitycollege.edu/academics/library/index.html.

Homework will also include utilizing MindTap which includes MOSS
(Medical Office Simulation Software). You will need to create a free
Cengage/MindTap account. MOSS assignments consist of training (not
graded) which are step-by-step instructions, and assessments (graded)
which require less instructions. MOSS assignments are due on the last
day of class during finals week (Wednesday, May 19, 2021).

There may be periodic discussions included in a particular chapter.
Please make sure to carefully review the assignments for that particular
chapter. Discussions will be graded as an assignment in the Canvas
grade book.

The discussions is where, collectively, we communicate as a class. Think
of the discussions as “showing up to class.” You will communicate with
other students in discussions where ideas and reactions to topics will be
shared. Discussions take the place of Zoom class meetings.

You bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, and perspective to class.
Your participation is valuable to your learning, as well as to the learning
of your classmates, and to my growth as an instructor at Fresno City
College; therefore, it is important to all of us that we all prepared. This
will make the learning experience much more meaningful for everyone
and contribute to everyone's successful completion of the course.

Come prepared to actively participate in the discussions. This is the best
way to engage you in learning the material (and it makes the
discussions more interesting). Attendance and participation are critical
to successful job performance and is an important part of your grade.
Employers want you to be self-motivated and able to manage your own
     schedule.

Discussion assignments will be graded according to the following
     guidelines:
Reply to all parts of my original topic by the due date. An initial
reply to the original topic is required before you will be able to see
          what others have posted.

Refrain from inappropriate language and personal attacks. You are
expected to be professional and respectful to your colleagues (and
to me, the instructor), just as you would in a face-to-face class. You
are allowed and encouraged to express your opinions without fear
of being attacked. Classroom etiquette is expected and enforced in
class discussions. I retain the right to determine what is and is not
          appropriate behavior in this classroom.

Posts must be meaningful and relevant to the thread. A simple
"yes/no" or "I agree/disagree" (or only a compliment) is not
meaningful. Instead, responses should include at least 4-5
          complete sentences.

You should proofread to make sure that you have included
complete sentences and have formatted correctly with proper
grammar, punctuation, spelling, and word usage. (Use the capital "
I " not the lowercase " i ".) Please use your own words when
posting to the discussion board, even if you find information from
          an online source.

Once you have posted to the original topic you should read what
has previously been posted by others to avoid repeating
          comments.

“A” posts(18 - 20 points): Full participation -- Uses complete sentences,
writes a well-developed paragraph or more, paying attention to spelling,
grammar, and tone. Completes all the requirements of submission
(Submitted on or before the initial deadline date, responded to at least one
classmate before the final deadline date). Addresses all parts of the required
topic completely.
“B” posts (16 - 17 points): Full participation -- Uses complete sentences,
writes a fairly well-developed paragraph or more, but may have errors in
spelling, grammar, and tone. Completes all the requirements of submission
(Submitted on or before the initial deadline date, responded to at least one
classmate before the final deadline date). Addressed almost all parts of the
required topic.

“C” posts (14 - 15 points): Partial participation -- Informative but does not
go into depth about the topic (perhaps too short or missing some of the
necessary information). Completes all the requirements of submission
(Submitted on or before the initial deadline date, responded to at least one
classmate before the final deadline date). May have some
spelling/grammatical errors.

“D” posts (12 - 13 points): Very little participation -- Addresses parts of the
question but may be superficial, little thought put into the response, possibly
too short, contains errors in sentence structure, spelling, and tone.
Completes all the requirements of submission (Submitted on or before the
initial deadline date, responded to at least one classmate before the final
deadline date).

“F” posts (0 -11 points): "0" for no participation at all. A score of “10”
indicates initial post not submitted by the initial deadline date or did not
respond to at least one classmate before the final deadline date. Does not
answer the question/topic, original post demonstrates little effort or evidence
of thought, response is too short, just agrees or disagrees without
explanation, single word statements, not submitted on time, sentences
contain excessive errors or do not make sense, inappropriate language,
personal attack. Did not complete all the requirements of submission.

Copying another student’s work is not acceptable. If another student’s
work is copied, whether knowingly or unknowingly, all students involved
will receive a zero for that assignment.

Assignments are meant to practice the skills you have learned from the
recorded PowerPoint lectures or the etext. You will be marked down for
incorrect or incomplete information. Homework should be organized,
using proper grammar and spelling. Points may be deducted for
    incorrect grammar and misspelled words.

You should spend approximately four hours on this class each week. Do
not wait until the last minute to do activities or take quizzes. Internet or
Canvas problems are not an excuse to turn in a late activity or a quiz.
Procrastinating shows in your work. You will be marked down for
incorrect or incomplete information. Homework should be organized,
using proper grammar and spelling. Points may be deducted for
    incorrect grammar and misspelled words.

I reserve the right to change the due date, schedule, and the number of
assignments. Changes will be announced through Canvas and via
    email.

EXAMS/TESTS
Exams and tests are located in MindTap. Some exams and tests may also be
located directly in Canvas. Due dates are firm. The score for a missed exam
will be zero. I may drop the lowest exam/test grade.

CAPSTONE ACTIVITIES
After each unit, there will be a Capstone for you to complete. Some of these
Capstones require the use of ear buds or headphones. In some Capstone
modules, you will not be able to check your answers and cannot go back to
the previous question. Capstones measure your knowledge of the chapters in
that particular unit. THERE ARE NO MAKE-UPS FOR MISSED
CAPSTONES.

FINAL EXAM
Final exam questions are located in Canvas and will be completed during the
week of finals. You must complete the entire course including the final exam.
Check the course syllabus and the course home page in Canvas for the days
that the final exam will be available. The final exam must be taken on
the dates scheduled. Failure to take the final will result in a zero for the
exam. THERE ARE NO MAKE-UPS FOR THE FINAL EXAM. If you are
unable to complete the final exam, a doctor’s note or other documentation
must be presented indicating the reason for missing the exam.
Late Work
No work is accepted one week after the due date. Work submitted
within a week after the due date is subject to a 20%-point deduction.

Extra Credit
Extra credit will be assigned at my discretion.

Class Norms
Etiquette Policy: We must always show respect to one another. Rudeness
and disrespect will not be tolerated in this course. Like any class, we are a
community, and we need to treat each other with courtesy and respect. Use
a courteous, professional, and respectful tone in emails and online postings.

Emergencies: If you have an emergency and need to contact me, please
email or call me. Please contact me prior to assignment due dates. For any
problems with Canvas, online information, or MindTap, please contact me.

Technology Expectations: Basic keyboarding, email, and Internet skills. In
this course, we will use:

Email: Most of the communication in this course is through email.
     Check your FCC email daily.
Canvas: Canvas is used in this course for information, communication,
     and completing assignments.

No make up work.

Academic Dishonesty Policy
Students at Fresno City College are entitled to the best education that the college can
make available to them, and they, their instructors, and their fellow students share the
responsibility to ensure that this education is honestly attained. Because cheating,
plagiarism, and collusion in dishonest activities erode the integrity of the college, each
student is expected to exert an entirely honest effort in all academic endeavors.
Academic dishonesty in any form is a very serious offense and will incur serious
consequences.

Cheating

Cheating is the act or attempted act of taking an examination or performing an
assigned, evaluated task in a fraudulent or deceptive manner, such as having improper
access to answers, in an attempt to gain an unearned academic advantage. Cheating
may include, but is not limited to, copying from another's work, supplying one’s work to
another, giving or receiving copies of examinations without an instructor’s permission,
using or displaying notes or devices inappropriate to the conditions of the examination,
allowing someone other than the officially enrolled student to represent the student, or
failing to disclose research results completely.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a specific form of cheating and is the use of another's words or ideas
without identifying them as such or giving credit to the source. Plagiarism may include,
but is not limited to, failing to provide complete citations and references for all work
that draws on the ideas, words, or work of others, failing to identify the contributors to
work done in collaboration, submitting duplicate work to be evaluated in different
courses without the knowledge and consent of the instructors involved, or encouraging,
permitting, or assisting another to do any act that could subject him or her to discipline.
Incidents of cheating and plagiarism may result in a variety of sanctions and penalties
that may range from a failing grade on the particular examination, paper, project, or
assignment in question to a failing grade in the course, at the discretion of the
instructor and depending on the severity and frequency of the incidents.

Accommodation for Students with Disabilities
Fresno City College is committed to creating accessible learning environments
consistent with federal and state law. To obtain academic adjustments or auxiliary aids,
students must be registered with the DSP&S office on campus. DSP&S can be reached
at (559) 442-8237 and is located online at https://www.fresnocitycollege.edu/student-
services/disabled-students-program-and-services/index.html.. All information is kept
confidential. If you are already registered with the DSP&S office, please provide your
Notice of Accommodation form to me as soon as possible, preferably during the first two
weeks of class.

Your success is important to me. If your accommodation includes taking the tests in
the DSP&S office, it is your responsibility to make an appointment to take the test on or
before the days of the online test and to inform me of the appointment. Quizzes/tests in
this class are not timed.

Please contact me as soon as possible if you have any questions.
