Welcome and introduction
Welcome to the School of Law and Politics! We are looking forward to meeting you very soon.
Your first few weeks in Cardiff will be busy and we have put this booklet together to outline the
things you will need to do before you get here and the welcome events you will need to attend
when you arrive in Cardiff.
PLEASE NOTE – it is extremely important that you check your University e-mail
address on a regular basis throughout term time and respond to any queries or
requests promptly.
Where can I find information?
The University has a dedicated web page for new students: http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/new-
students/enrolment; these also include a section and guide for international students.
Residences
If you have applied for University accommodation, the Residences Division will contact you. Further
information about accommodation can be found on the university web site at:
http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/study/accommodation/undergraduates/residences.
Should you have any issues or queries, you can get in touch on 029 2087 4142 / 4052 or by email at
residences@cardiff.ac.uk
International students
International students require extra support to settle into university at the start of semester, so the
International Office organises a FREE coach collection service to the University on Wednesday 19
and Thursday 20 September 2018 from Heathrow and Cardiff Airports.
Following this, there is an Induction Programme. These events aim to help international students
make friends, learn more about Cardiff and the University in a safe environment so that they can
settle down to their new academic life quickly.
Complete online enrolment
Before you arrive in Cardiff, you will need to complete online enrolment on SIMS Online:
https://sims.cf.ac.uk/
You will be sent information by email about how and when to complete the enrolment task. You will
be notified by e-mail about how to access the online enrolment system so please check your
personal e-mail account regularly.
As part of online enrolment you will be asked for details including:
2• Contact addresses and phone numbers (so you will need to wait until you have been informed of
your Cardiff address before you can start online enrolment).
• Details relating to the payment of tuition fees.
• Information that will be used for monitoring of equality data.
• Confirmation of the degree programme you have been accepted for.
If you have not been sent information about the online enrolment process by Monday 17
September, or if you experience any problems with the process, contact the University Enrolment
team on 029 2087 6211 or email them at Registrysupport@cardiff.ac.uk.
Further information about the online enrolment process can be found on the university web site at:
http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/new-students/enrolment
Student ID Card
To meet the requirements of UKVI, all students will need to provide evidence of their right to study
in the UK. International students will be required to show their passport and valid visa and EU
students will be required to show their passport or national identity card in order to complete
enrolment.
Home students will need to provide their birth certificate, passport, naturalisation certificate or right
of abode certificate. Students unable to provide any of these forms of identification, but with two
alternative forms of identification, will be given a temporary card and will have up to six weeks to
obtain identification. If identification is not provided within six weeks of the course start date, the
student’s registration with the University will be cancelled. For more information please see
http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/new-students/when-you-arrive/international-students/biometric-
residence-permit-brp
As soon as possible, and no later than Friday 28 September, you must collect your University Identity
/ NUS card from the Students’ Union. This card will trigger your Student Loan and allow you access
to the University Libraries and the Students’ Union facilities.
Personal tutors
An important feature of the School of Law & Politics is the personal tutor system. All students are
assigned to a member of the academic staff whose role it is to give you guidance and advice when
you require it and generally keep a watchful eye over your progress. If you need help or advice, you
should contact your personal tutor first. Tutors are expected to maintain regular contact with you,
but do not be afraid to get in touch with your tutor. You will be informed during welcome week who
your personal tutor is and how you can get in touch with him or her. Details will be posted on
Learning Central.

What is Learning Central?
You will soon become familiar with using Learning Central. Learning Central is Cardiff University's
Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). This is a web-based application that supports online learning
and teaching. It provides an integrated environment which enables:
• announcements to be posted for a group of students enrolled on a particular module;
• learning materials, such as handbooks, lecture handouts, slides, reading lists and web links
to be published in a secure environment;
• online communication between students and tutors using discussion boards;
• collaborative learning and learner-learner interaction through discussion boards, blogs and
wikis;
• electronic submission of assignments;
6• setting and taking of online assessments with automatic marking and feedback facilities;
• recording of student grades;
For further information on Learning Central and Information Literacy in general, use the following
link:
http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/study/student-life/learning-support
Student Handbook
All students have access to the School’s Student Handbook. The handbook provides general
information about the University as well as your studies in the School of Law and Politics. The
handbook and other information you will need throughout the year can be accessed on Learning
Central – (18/19-LAWPL-LLB-GEN GENERAL INFORMATION FOR LLB STUDENTS).
Your timetable
Your law modules will be taught through a combination of lectures (large groups comprising all
students on the module) and tutorials or seminars (small groups of approximately 16 students).
Attendance at all classes is compulsory and the School will monitor your attendance in your law
classes.
Your timetable
The University uses MyTimetable, an on-line application which allows you to access your timetable
from your phone or laptop.
http://sites.cardiff.ac.uk/timetables-project/
You will be able to access your teaching timetable online via a dedicated website, on your mobile
phone, via your home page in Learning Central or via the Student Intranet:
MyTimetable website: https://timetables.cardiff.ac.uk
Mobile phone: https://timetables.cardiff.ac.uk/m
Learning Central: login to Learning Central and select ‘MyTimetable’ (preferred browsers are Firefox
or Chrome)
Student Intranet: https://intranet.cardiff.ac.uk/ - go to the Applications page and scroll down to
MyTimetable
Lectures
Law lectures begin on Monday 1 October. Lectures take place every week most law modules have
two lectures per week (you will need to attend both).
You will be able to access your lecture timetable via the MyTimetable app from welcome week.
Tutorials/seminars
7The School will allocate all students to law tutorial and seminar groups in the first two teaching
weeks and you will be able to access your timetable via the My Timetable app.
Tutorials in law modules take place every two weeks; we will ensure your teaching is spread out
evenly so that you will have tutorials in two modules in one week, and tutorials in your other two
modules in the following week. This pattern will repeat during the semester.
LLB programme structure
Qualifying law degree
The LLB Law programme provides you with the opportunity to graduate with a qualifying law degree
(QLD); this simply means you study subject areas known as the foundations of legal knowledge
during the course of your degree.
Tuition in the foundation modules is spread across the three years of the LLB programme; the
foundation modules in Years 1 and 2 are compulsory and must be taken by all students, but the
foundation modules in Year 3 are optional and you may decide not to study them. LLB students at
the School who wish to attain a QLD must study the following foundations of legal knowledge
modules during the course of their law studies:
Year 1 Year 2 Year 3
Contract Law Land Law [20] or [30] Law of the EU [20] or [30]
Public Law Tort [20] or [30] Trusts [20] or [30]
Criminal Law [20] or [30]
Criminal Law
(Taylors only)
If you have already studied any of the above subjects, you will not be permitted to repeat them at
Cardiff. Therefore, it is important that your module selection reflects the foundations of legal
knowledge subject areas that you have not previously studied.
If you intend to pursue postgraduate qualifications, overseas courses or qualifications or to practise
law outside the UK, please ensure that you are aware of the requirements of any professional bodies
of the country in which you intend to practise as you may be required to study certain subjects other
than, or in addition to, the foundations of legal knowledge.
Module credit values
In each year, students must study modules to the value of, and no more than, 120 credits in either
one of the following combinations:
4 x 30 credit modules, OR
3 x 20 credit modules and 2 x 30 credit modules
20 and 30 credit modules
Several of the School’s modules are available as both 20 and 30 credit options and the choice to
study which one is entirely up to you (although you cannot study both the 20 and 30 credit version
of the same module). Most students on the LLB Law programme study 4 x 30 credit modules in each
year of the programme, but you are permitted to study the 20 or 30 credit versions of the
8foundation modules; you may wish to study all of them as 20 or 30 credit options or some at 20
credits and others at 30 credits.
The main differences between the 20 and 30 credit versions are that the 20 credit modules contain
fewer topics, teaching may finish a little earlier in the year, there are fewer tutorials and the
examinations are normally shorter. However, the content of both the 20 and 30 credit foundation
modules satisfy the criteria for a qualifying law degree (QLD).
9YEAR 2 AND YEAR 3 MODULES: 2018-19
Year 2 students may take up to 30 credits in designated Year 3 modules (indicated by *); please note, however, it may not always be
possible to accommodate choices owing to limitation of numbers on modules and timetabling restrictions. Year 3 students will be
given priority on Year 3 modules. Year 2 modules will not be available to Year 3 students.
