                                       Rules
1. The Society shall be known as the Western Staffordshire Bull Terrier Society (hereafter
referred to as “the Society”
2. The Object
The Society shall encourage the spread of the breed in the area of the west of England, where it
shall hold shows and guarantee classes in shows, and do all in its power to encourage good
fellowship and so advance the interests of the breed.
3. Management
The Society shall be under the management of the following officers and committee.
A President, Chairman, Vice Chairman, Honorary Secretary, Honorary Treasurer, Show Manager,
Honorary assistant Secretaries as deemed necessary and a minimum committee of nine. A
quorum shall be five. All are allowed to vote. The Chairman shall have the casting vote in the
event of a tie.
If any officer or committee member fails to attend three consecutive meetings, he/she shall
lose his/her place as an officer or committee member unless suitable apology is sent to the
honorable secretary before the meeting, the committee to decide whether such an apology is
acceptable.
4. Election of Officers and Committee
All potential committee members nominated must be fully paid up members of the Society for
three consecutive years prior to nomination. No person may be nominated as an officer of the
Society unless that person has served at least one year as a committee member the year
previous to his/her nomination. Resignation by an officer during his/her term of office may be
filled by appointment and recommendation of the committee of any member of the Society
until the AGM when normal procedure for appointing an officer will take place. Any member
with this qualification may be proposed and seconded by members writing to the Honorary
Secretary at least one lunar month prior to the AGM. All the officers and committee and
auditors appointed by general vote at the AGM. One third of the committee shall retire each
year but may stand for re-election if they so wish. Husband and wife, blood relatives or
members of the same family shall not be eligible to hold office as Chairman, vice chairman
honorary secretary, honorary treasurer or show manager at the same time. However, in
exceptional circumstances and only to ensure the continuance of the society. The previous
paragraph may be suspended for that year or until circumstances allow the Society to revert to
its preferred practice.
5 Election of members
Applications for membership will come before the committee of the Society for election and
must have a majority vote of two thirds
6. Annual subscription
Membership shall run from January 1st to December 31st. Renewal of membership shall be
made before the AGM thereafter, all applications will be viewed as new memberships.
7. Financial tax
The financial year of the Society will end on the 31st of December. Non-members of the Society
may not enjoy the privileges of the Society other than Open or Championship Shows.
8. Annual General Meeting and Special General Meetings
The AGM of the Society shall be before the 25th of March each year. At this meeting the
honorary secretary shall produce a report of the year’s activities and the honorary treasurer
shall produce an audited account of income and expenditure and a balance for the year, which
will be available at the AGM for members, and hereafter copies can be obtained from the
honourable secretary. No business shall be conducted at the AGM unless notice thereof
appears on the agenda, with the exception of routine matters or those which in the opinion of
the chairman of the meeting are urgent. A special general meeting shall be called if;
     a) fifteen members require one, in which case they must send written reasons for the
        purpose of the meeting to the honorary secretary, who will call the meeting within one
        calendar month of the receipt of the demand; or
     b) required by the committee
No business other than that named in the notice of the meeting shall be brought before a SGM.
Not less than fourteen days’ notice shall be given in writing to the members of a SGM.
9. Duties of the Honorary Secretary
The honorary secretary shall keep a minute record book of every meeting. He/she will arrange
the Society’s shows, attend to correspondence and carry out the decisions of the committee.
10. Bank Account
The honorary treasurer shall open an account with a bank in the name of the Society into which
all revenue shall be paid and from which withdrawals shall only be made on the signature of the
honorary treasurer and either the honorary secretary or the chairman. If exceptional
circumstances arise and the honorary treasurer and the honorary secretary are husband and
wife or blood relatives or members of the same family, then only one signature can be used
from that relationship. The third possible signatory in these exceptional circumstances will then
include another officer of the committee which will not be a husband or wife, blood relative or
member of the same family as any of the two signatories.
11. Suspensions
Any member who shall be suspended under Kennel Club rule A42j(4) and or disqualified under
Kennel Club rule A42j(8) shall ipso facto cease to be a member of the Society for the duration of
the suspension and/or disqualification. If the conduct of any member shall, in the opinion of
the Society be injurious, or likely to be injurious to the character or interests of the Society, the
committee of the Society may, at a meeting, the notice convening which includes as an object,
the consideration of the conduct of the member, determine that a SGM of the Society shall be
called for the purpose of passing a resolution to expel him/her. Notice of the SGM shall be sent
to the accused member giving particulars of the complaint and advising the place, date and
hour of the meeting, that he/she may attend and offer an explanation. If at that meeting a
resolution to expel is passed by two thirds of the members present and voting, his/her name
shall be forthwith erased from the list of members, and he/she shall thereupon cease for all
purposes to be a member of the Society except that he/she may within two calendar months
from the date of such meeting appeal to the Kennel Club and subject to such conditions as the
Kennel Club may impose.
12. Amendments to the Rules
The rules of the Society shall not be altered except at an AGM, notice of which gives details of
the proposals to alter the rules. The amendments must be carried by two thirds majority of the
members present and voting. Such alterations shall not be operative until approved by the
Kennel Club.
13. Honorary Assistant Secretary(s)
The Society shall appoint Honorary Assistant Secretary(s) from the areas not represented by the
Honorary Secretary who will be responsible for holding meetings in their areas and
representing their areas at all committee meetings.

14. Disposal of trophies
Should the Society cease to exist, all trophies shall be returned to the donors, except those
which are the sole property of the Society and shown in the accounts. These will be disposed of
as the committee decides.
15. Kennel Club Authority on Rules
The Kennel Club is the final authority for interpreting the rules and regulations of the Society
and in all cases relative to canine or Society matters.
16. Federation of Clubs
The Society shall not join any federation of Societies or Clubs without the permission of the
Kennel Club.
17. The Society must send a list of members and their addresses to the Kennel Club with the
annual returns and if so requested, make an up to date list of the members available for
inspection by the Kennel Club and members of the Society.
18. The officers acknowledge that during the month of January each year, maintenance of the
title fee will be forwarded to the Kennel Club by the secretary for the maintenance of
registration and that by the 31st July each year, other returns as stipulated by the Kennel Club
rules & regulations for the registration and maintenance of the title of Societies and Breed
Councils and the affiliation of Agricultural Societies and Municipal authorities, will be forwarded
to the Kennel Club of any change of Secretary of the Society which may occur during the course
of the year.
19. Criteria for judges
All judges on acceptance of our offer of a show, sign a declaration that I shall judge to the breed
standard which describes the ideal characteristics, temperament, and appearance of the breed
and ensure that the breed is fit for function. Absolute soundness is essential and having
assessed the dogs will penalise any features or exaggerations which are detrimental to the
health, welfare or soundness of the breed.
A1 List
Includes persons the Society would support at a championship show where challenge
certificates are on offer and who have previously been approved by the Kennel Club to award
Challenge Certificates in the breed.
A2 List
For persons who fulfil the requirements for the A3 list and who have been assessed with the
Kennel Club requirements and accepted by the Kennel Club for inclusion on an A2 list and have
the support of the Society.
A3 List for Breed Specialists
Persons on the list are required to have the following criteria:
     To have judged at least 75 classes of Staffordshire Bull Terriers
     To have judged at least three breed club shows
     To have judged each sex at a breed show
     To have judged a minimum of 225 Staffordshire Bull Terriers
     To have a minimum of 7 years judging experience in the breed prior to the date of show
     Save in exceptional circumstances to have bred or owned at least 3 dogs when they
         obtained their first entry in the Kennel Club Stud Book
     To have stewarded over a minimum of three years and at 12 shows
     To have attended a seminar given by a Kennel Club accredited trainer on Kennel Club
         rules, regulations and judging procedures and passed the relevant examination with a
         mark of 75% or above (KC policy as of 01/07/2001)
     To have attended a seminar given by a Kennel Club accredited trainer on Conformation
         and Movement with a certificate of attendance (KC policy)
     To have attended a Conformation and Movement “Hands on Assessment” conducted
         by a Kennel club accredited trainer and passed the assessment (KC policy as of
         01/07/2005)
     To have attended a minimum of three specific breed club seminars, officially organised
         by a registered club together with an assessment pass in an examination if applicable,
         both run in accordance with the Kennel Clubs codes of best practice.
A3 List for Non-Breed Specialists
Persons on the list are required to have the following criteria:
     To have judged at least 75 classes of Staffordshire Bull Terriers
     To have judged at least two breed club shows
     To have judged each sex at a breed show
     To have judged a minimum of 225 Staffordshire Bull Terriers
     To have a minimum of 7 years judging experience in the breed prior to the date of show
     To have awarded Challenge Certificates in at least one other recognised breed
     To have attended a minimum of one specific breed club seminar, officially organised by
         a registered club together with an assessment pass in an examination if applicable, both
         run in accordance with the Kennel Clubs codes of best practice
B List for Breed Specialists
Persons on the list are required to have the following criteria:
     To have at least 3 years’ experience exhibiting in this breed
     To have attended the following seminars given by a Kennel Club Accredited Trainer, and
         passed the relevant examination/assessment, if applicable:
             o Kennel Club Regulations and Judging Procedures
             o Conformation and Movement
             o Points of a Dog Assessment
             o Breed Specific Seminar run in accordance with the relevant Kennel Club Code of
                 Best Practice
B List for Non-Breed Specialists
Persons on the list are required to have the following criteria:
     To have completed the breed specialist requirements and to have awarded CCs in their
         own breed
C List
For aspiring judges whom the society are of the opinion show judging potential
20. Members of the society, when called upon as a Staffordshire Bull Terrier expert, shall do so
conforming to the following rules;
Using all their experience, scrupulously and those basis alone shall give one of the following
decisions:
     This is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier
     This is not a Staffordshire Bull Terrier
     I cannot be certain in this case
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier expert acting in that capacity shall in no circumstances go beyond
this remit and hazard guesses as to the ancestry of crosses or types, nor shall the expert identify
Pit bulls. The function of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier expert is simply and solely to prevent
misidentification of Staffordshire Bull Terriers.
21. If the society expels any member for discreditable conduct in connection with dogs, dog
shows, trials or competitions, the society must report the matter in writing to the Kennel Club
within seven days and supply any particulars required.
22. It is the policy of the society that;
    a) The Honorary Secretary shall list all requests for judges under correspondence at the
         meeting following the request
    b) The Club or Society making the request shall be provided with the current list with no
         word, spoken or written, to indicate a preference or a mark for the same purpose
    c) Where advice is sought, the secretary shall inform the enquirer that the matter will be
         brought before the committee for decision and in no way pre-empt the committee’s
         decision
    d) A complete list of Clubs and Society’s in receipt of our document shall be provided to
         committee members at a meeting following the completion of the Judges list for that
         year
23. The definition of a Vice President is as follows:
The members of the society, may at an AGM reward exceptional or long meritous service with a
Vice Presidency. That Vice presidency is entirely honorific and carries no more rights and
privileges than those enjoyed by members except the committee shall offer hospitality at shows
or special occasions. The honour is normally, but not exclusively given at the end of service, but
may be offered early in exceptional circumstances. The reward may be considered for life but if
the conduct of any vice president shall in the opinion of the Society be injurious, or likely to be
injurious to the character or the interests of the Society, the rules applicable to the membership
shall apply.
24. Code of Ethics
All members of the Western Staffordshire Bull Terrier Society undertake to abide by its general
Code of Ethics. Society members;
    a) Will properly house, feed, water and exercise all dogs under their care and arrange for
         appropriate veterinary attention if and when required
    b) Will agree without reservation that any veterinary surgeon performing an operation on
         any of their dogs which alters the natural conformation of the animal, may report such
         operation to the Kennel Club
    c) Will agree that no healthy puppy will be culled. Puppies which may not conform to the
         Breed Standard should be placed in suitable homes
    d) Will abide by all aspects of the Animal Welfare Act
e) Will not create demand for, nor supply, puppies that have been docked illegally
f) Will agree not to breed from a dog or bitch which could be in any way harmful to the
   dog or to the breed
g) Will not allow any of their dogs to roam at large or to cause a nuisance to neighbours or
   those carrying out official duties
h) Will ensure that their dogs wear properly tagged collars and will be kept leashed or
   under effective control when away from home
i) Will clean up after their dogs in public places or anywhere their dogs are being exhibited
j) Will only sell dogs where there is a reasonable expectation of a happy and healthy life
   and will help with the re-homing of a dog if the initial circumstances change
k) Will supply written details of all dietary requirements and give guidance concerning
   responsible ownership when placing dogs in a new home
l) Will ensure that all relevant Kennel Club documents are provided to the new owner
   when selling or transferring a dog, and will agree, in writing, to forward any relevant
   documents at the earliest opportunity, if not immediately available
m) Will not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers or directly or
   indirectly allow dogs to be given as a prize or donation in a competition of any kind.
   Will not sell by sale or auction Kennel Club registration certificates as stand-alone items
   (not accompanying a dog).
n) Will not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed nor falsely advertise
   dogs nor mislead any person regarding the health or quality of a dog
o) If I breed or allow my stud dog to be used, then it will be in the endeavour of trying to
   further the quality of the breed and not for the purpose of commercial interest
