MESSAGE FROM ROYAL MTC’S

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
It is my pleasure to welcome
                               you to the 20th anniversary
                               of the Master Playwright
                               Festival, honouring one of the
                               greatest playwrights of all
                               time, William Shakespeare.

                                Some of the most memorable
                                characters in Shakespeare’s
                                oeuvre are the Rude
                                Mechanicals in his comedy
                                A Midsummer Night’s
                                Dream. This motley crew of
tradesmen-turned-players, led by the greatest thespian
of all, Nick Bottom, come together to put on the play of
Pyramus and Thisbe for the Duke and Duchess on their
wedding day. Their antics and adventure, as they rehearse
and so passionately perform the play, are some of the most
hilarious turns ever to grace a stage.

I am reminded of these lovely souls, as players across the
city have enveloped themselves in the masterful texts of the
Bard, wrestled and rehearsed the exquisite language, and
now take to the boards to unleash their plays in the festival.

I welcome the many participating companies that have made
this year’s festival, our final edition, the largest yet. And to
you, our audience, thank you so much for joining us and for
sharing in the delight of celebrating William Shakespeare’s
incredible body of work, as well as the plays influenced by
his canon. I encourage you to take in as many offerings as
the festival provides, and to relish and revel in his artistry!

See you at the theatre,

Kelly Thornton, Artistic Director
Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre

WILLIAM
SHAKESPE
APRIL 23, 1564 – APRIL 23, 1616

William Shakespeare was a prolific writer during the
Elizabethan and Jacobean ages of British theatre and is
known to be one of the greatest poets and playwrights in
English history. His works include 38 plays, 154 sonnets,
two narrative poems and a collection of other poems. Some
of his most well-known works include Romeo and Juliet,
Macbeth, Hamlet and Henry V.

William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564 to John
Shakespeare and Mary Arden in the town of Stratford-upon-
Avon. He received his education at Stratford Grammar
School but was pulled out early as his family couldn’t afford
it. In 1582, he married Anne Hathaway and had three children,
Susanna (1583) and twins Hamnet and Judith (1585).

EARE
In 1592, Shakespeare left his family and went to London
and began his acting career. It is said that the 1590s were
his best years of writing plays and sonnets. Through the
years, he progressed and improved in his work from actor,
to teacher and then playwright. In London, he became
a founding member of The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, a
company of actors that later became The King’s Men. Many
of his famous tragedies, such as Macbeth and King Lear,
were written during his time in the company.

Shakespeare died in Stratford-upon-Avon at the age of 52 and
is buried in the sanctuary of the parish church, Holy Trinity.

The title says it all. Two sets of twins are separated in
infancy by a shipwreck – one a set of masters (both named
Antipholus) and the other a set of servants (both named
Dromio). All four unknowingly find themselves in the same
town, resulting in a comedy of mistaken identity, and
confusion in love and commerce. These twins are truly
identical, as each is played by just one actor, even when both
twins appear in the same scene.

This comic deconstruction of Shakespeare’s famous play
about the Moor of Venice takes a new look at Desdemona,
the tragic heroine murdered by her jealous husband, when
the strawberry-embroidered handkerchief he gave her is
seen in the possession of another man. But was Desdemona
really the wide-eyed, innocent victim the Bard led us to
believe?

You’ll never look at Othello quite the same way again,
once you’ve seen what our heroine got up to in the scenes
Shakespeare didn’t write!

BY TIMOTHY FINDLEY
BUNBURY PRODUCTIONS
Rachel Browne Theatre
211 Bannatyne Avenue
Wheelchair accessible
Capacity 100

1601. The eve of the execution of Shakespeare’s lover and
Elizabeth I’s lover. The Queen, Shakespeare and his actors…
together, for one night.
For years, Elizabeth has had to suppress her vulnerability for
fear of being dismissed as “too feminine.” For years, Ned
has portrayed Shakespeare’s leading ladies, suppressing his
manhood for fear of presenting as “too masculine.”
In Findley’s award-winning play, Shakespeare fights for his
lover’s life, as Ned and the Queen turn to each other in their
struggle with their gender roles, and the right to love whom
they love.
Director: Katie German

John Bluethner, Toby Hughes, Cuinn Joseph, Rochelle Kives,
Daina Leitold, Darren Martens, Megan McArton, Maggie

GOODNIGHT
DESDEMONA
(GOOD

JULIET)
BY ANN-MARIE MACDONALD
THEATRE PROJECTS MANITOBA
Colin Jackson Theatre
393 Portage Avenue (3rd floor, Portage Place)
Wheelchair accessible
Capacity 79

Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) is an
exuberant comedy and feminist revisioning of Shakespeare’s
Othello and Romeo and Juliet. It takes us from a dusty office
in Canada’s Queen’s University into the fraught and furious
worlds of two of Shakespeare’s best-known tragedies
and turns them upside down. Constance Ledbelly is the
beleaguered “spinster” academic, and unlikely heroine,
who embarks on a quest for Shakespearean origins and,
ultimately, her own identity.
A gender-bendy, big-hearted and crazily intelligent romp,
where irony and anger sing in perfect harmony with
innocence and poignancy.
Director: Michelle Boulet
Cast: RobYn Slade as Constance Ledbelly, with Tom Keenan,
Ryan Miller, Laura Olafson and Joanne Roberts

UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA
THEATRE PROGRAM

Gail Asper Performing Arts Hall,
Taché Hall
150 Dafoe Road, U of M
Wheelchair accessible
Capacity 99

Shakespeare’s great tragedy of a man of action beset by
witches, war and his own ambitions. It tells the story of a
couple, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, trapped in a world
view that values violence and acquisition as the highest of
masculine virtues, a world in which the drive to achieve runs
in concert with the need to destroy and ravage: “When you
durst do it, then you were a man.”

This production takes place in the 80s, the period whose
toxic masculinity still haunts us today.

Director: William Kerr

Assistant Directors: Kitty Kerr, Evan Friesen, Cali Sproule

Measure For Measure is noteworthy for its political and
social implications and its compelling characters: a duke
posing as a monk, a would-be nun ordered to sacrifice her
chastity to save her brother’s life, a self-righteous courtier,
and a host of colourful supporting characters.

This engrossing drama is set in 16th-century Vienna. Duke
Vincentio attempts to enforce the city’s long-ignored
morality laws, which results in a death sentence for Claudio,
a young man accused of seducing and impregnating his
fiancée, Julietta. His sister Isabella attempts to get a pardon
for him, but refuses when she is asked to exchange her
virtue for her brother’s life.

When Tom Stoppard sets his sights on Shakespeare, he
comes up with some peculiar lenses through which to look.
His most recent stare at the Bard has been Shakespeare
in Love, firstly as a successful film and, as we saw locally, a
marvellous adaptation for the stage.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern was a successful play in the
70s which Stoppard later directed as a film. All we can do
is give this gifted dramatist a reading of that earlier work.
Here’s Tom reading between the lines.

SHAKESPEARE’S
VILLAINS
BY STEVEN BERKOFF
KRAKT THEATRE
The King’s Head Pub
120 King Street (2nd floor)
No wheelchair access
Capacity 120

Steven Berkoff, master of playing the villain on screen
(Octopussy, Beverly Hills Cop, etc.), has written a play about
some of Shakespeare’s most notorious villains. With often
darkly hilarious contemporary analyses of character and
qualities of villainy, the narrative eventually gives way to
Shakespeare’s words and the villains who spoke them.

Native Winnipegger Kelly Daniels directs multi-nominated
stage veteran and 17-year Shaw Festival ensemble member
Ric Reid in this “masterclass in evil.”

Love(?) is in the air in Padua! Three oafish men are vying for
the hand of the beautiful Bianca. Their only obstacle, apart
from their hilariously garish personalities, is Bianca’s father
who insists that his eldest daughter, Katharina, be married
first. Reports of Katharina’s personality describe her as
“shrewish”, loud, obstinate, hellish, and worse; but they won’t
stop the boastful vagabond Petruchio from staking claim to
 her hand.

Disguise, deceit, violence and more are bursting forth from

Five hundred years after his death, Shakespeare and his
friend Richard Burbage are beguiled by a random jester to
leave their graves and watch rehearsals of Shakespeare’s
plays.

Compiled as an introduction to Shakespeare, this mid-winter
fanstasy unfolds in a contemporary rehearsal hall. Beloved
scenes from eight of his plays entertain Shakespeare and
Burbage while they charm a 21st-century student and
actress with tales of their lives. Still furious for having been
labelled an ‘upstart crow’, Shakespeare basks in the music of
his words as each scene unfolds.

Caesar’s right-hand man, makes a moving speech. The
conspirators are driven from Rome and two armies are
formed: one side following the conspirators; the other,
Antony. Antony has the superior force, and surrounds Brutus
and Cassius, but they kill themselves to avoid capture.

LOOKING FOR RICHARD (1996)
Part classical performance and part examination of
Shakespearean dramaturgy, this acclaimed film features Al
Pacino as both director and star of a production of Richard III.

ALL IS TRUE (2018)
The year is 1613. Shakespeare is acknowledged as the
greatest writer of the age but disaster strikes when his
renowned Globe Theatre burns to the ground. Devastated,
Shakespeare returns to Stratford, where he must face a
troubled past and a neglected family. Haunted by the death
of his only son Hamnet, he struggles to mend the broken
relationships with his wife and daughters. In so doing, he
is ruthlessly forced to examine his own failings as husband
and father. His very personal search for the truth uncovers
secrets and lies within a family at war. Starring Kenneth
Branagh, Judi Dench and Ian McKellen.
