HSC HIGHER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE ASSESSMENT POLICY AND PROCEDURES 2017 - 2018
HSC HIGHER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE
ASSESSMENT POLICY AND PROCEDURES 2017 - 2018
Part 1: Eligibility and ATAR Information
I. PATTERN OF STUDY
To qualify for the Higher School Certificate, students must satisfactorily complete a Preliminary pattern of
study comprising at least twelve (12) units and a HSC pattern of study comprising at least ten (10) units. Both
the Preliminary and HSC patterns must include:
- at least six (6) units from Board Developed Courses;
- at least two (2) units of a Board Developed Course in English;
- at least three (3) courses of two Unit value or greater (either Board Developed or Board Endorsed
courses);
- at least four (4 subjects)
To satisfy pattern of study requirements for the Higher School Certificate a student may count a maximum of
six (6) Preliminary units and six (6) HSC units from courses in Science.
ll. SATISFACTORY COMPLETION OF A COURSE
The following course completion criteria refer to both Preliminary and HSC courses.
Criteria - A student will be considered to have satisfactorily completed a course if, in the Principal’s view, there is
sufficient evidence that the student has;
- followed the course developed or endorsed by the Board; and
- applied themselves with the diligence and sustained effort to the set tasks and experiences provided in
the course by the College; and
- achieved some or all of the course outcomes
- (for Year 12 HSC course only) having made a genuine attempt at assessment tasks which together
contribute in excess of 50% of the final course assessment marks. If a student’s attempt at a particular
task score is zero, it is a matter for the teacher’s professional judgment whether the attempt is a
genuine one.
In respect of this last point it is emphasised that completion of tasks worth exactly 50% is not sufficient; tasks
worth in excess of 50% must be attempted.
Note : As a result of poor attendance, course criteria may not be met. Parents are notified in writing if
students are at risk of being deemed unsatisfactory.
III. AUSTRALIAN TERTIARY ADMISSIONS RANK (ATAR)
ELIGIBILITY FOR AN ATAR
To be eligible for an ATAR a student must complete at least ten (10) units of Board Developed courses
including at least two (2) units of English.
The Board Developed courses must include at least three (3) courses of two units or greater, and at least four
(4) subjects.
No more than (2) units of Category B courses can be used.HSC HIGHER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE
ASSESSMENT POLICY AND PROCEDURES 2017 - 2018
IV. CALCULATION OF THE ATAR
The ATAR is based on the aggregate of scaled marks in ten(10) units of satisfactorily completed Board
Developed Courses comprising:
Two units in English AND
Your best eight (8) units chosen from your remaining units to the provision that no more than two (2) units
of Category B courses be included.
Your results will be automatically forwarded in confidence to the Universities Admission Centre (UAC). If
you want your results sent to admissions centres or tertiary institutions in other states you should apply
directly to the institution. If you do not wish to have your results made available to UAC you must advise
the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) in writing no later than the end of August of your HSC year.
Note : The HSC examination marks (50%) AND school based assessment marks (50%) for Board Developed Courses
are both used to calculate the ATAR.
Part 2: Assessment Schedules
All Year 11 Preliminary & Year 12 HSC students will be issued with a schedule of assessment tasks in
accordance with NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) subject specifications.
This should include:
- the number of assessment tasks;
- the components and weightings as specified in the assessment requirements;
- the approximate timing of tasks;
- the value of each task in relation to the total number of marks for the course;
- the nature of each assessment task (eg assignment). Where possible two weeks notice will be given of
the specific date and nature of any assessment task. Any changes to assessment dates or tasks must
be made by negotiation between students and teachers.
Note: No assessment is due within one week of an exam period or one week after retreats. Students must sign
for all Assessment Schedules.
The spirit of the policy is negotiation. Teachers and students can always negotiate changes to the Assessment
Schedule, or the timing of tasks, as long as there is total agreement and final approval is given by the Senior School
Co-ordinator. In the case of a change to the Schedule (e.g. percentage change) a new Schedule must be issued,
and students should then sign for a new Schedule. When the timing is re-negotiated, a new Schedule does not
have to be issued but the details of the changed timing needs to be provided to students in writing.
Students who object to the re-scheduling of tasks, or object to any aspect of assessment (schedules, marking etc),
must notify their classroom teacher immediately in order to resolve the issue. If the issue is not resolved, it is to
be referred to the KLA Coordinator. The Assistant Principal Curriculum should only be involved if the issue cannot
be resolved through the normal processes. The Principal will make the final determination if all negotiation has
failed.HSC HIGHER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE
ASSESSMENT POLICY AND PROCEDURES 2017 - 2018
Part 3: Student Responsibilities
I. ILLNESS/MISADVENTURE
You will be not penalised for missing classroom tasks or handing in assignments late because of illness or
misadventure (accidents or non-medical problems) on the day the task if due, if you provide valid written
evidence of illness or misadventure.
If you are sick or suffer misadventure during examination periods you must contact the College as soon as
possible. Any written evidence must be submitted on the first day of your return to school. This must be
shown to the subject teacher and given to the Assistant Principal Curriculum.
It is necessary to produce a medical certificate for any illness that prevents you from completing an
Assessment Task. The medical certificate must be dated on and for the day/s on which you were absent
and must be submitted the day of your return to school. In the case of misadventure, conclusive evidence
must be produced (see Part 4). Driving tests, personal appointments and holiday trips are not acceptable.
If your reasons for missing a task are accepted by the KLA Coordinator, you may be given a substitute task
as soon as possible after the original task date. In exceptional circumstances an estimated mark may be
awarded. In some cases for some subjects, it is neither suitable for the student nor appropriate to the
nature of the task for a substitute task to be given. In these cases, an estimated mark will be given.
Please note: It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements for substitute tasks the day of returning
to school. If you experience difficulty in locating the subject teacher, notify the KLA Coordinator or the
Curriculum Administrator who will assist in making these arrangements. Failure to make suitable
arrangements will result in the award of a zero mark.
All misadventure documentation must be shown to relevant subject teacher and handed in to the
Curriculum Administrator for filing (students should keep a photocopy).
Unacceptable reasons for not completing a task or making suitable arrangements to resit a missed task will
result in the award of a ZERO mark. Assessments will not be compensated for factors such as long-term
situations or holiday trips that affect your preparation for or performance on a task.
Requests to sit for an assessment task or examination other than the set time will be considered by the KLA
Coordinator and the Assistant Principal Curriculum.
Where it is not appropriate for students to sit for the same task or even a substitute task, an estimated
mark will be provided.
II. SUBMISSION OF ASSESSMENT TASKS
Students are expected to hand in assessment tasks as directed by their teacher. Hand in tasks will be due
on a Monday, and must be submitted prior to Homeroom. Failure to do so will result in a 25% penalty.
Students must print tasks prior to submission time. It is strongly recommended that this is done at home
prior to the due date. Students cannot be guaranteed access to printers on the day.HSC HIGHER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE
ASSESSMENT POLICY AND PROCEDURES 2017 - 2018
In exceptional circumstances, assessment tasks may be submitted to the KLA Coordinator or the Assistant
Principal Curriculum. Under no circumstances are assessment tasks to be left in the Student Information
Office or at the front reception office.
Where an extension of time is required, students are expected to apply in writing to the KLA Coordinator in
advance and furnish valid reasons for the extension (eg illness, misadventure). Tasks must be handed in by
the time specified on the due time. Late tasks must be handed in immediately upon return to school
complete with misadventure documentation.
Where students have arranged for someone else to submit their assessment task (e.g. friend, parent, etc)
they are to ensure that the assessment task is submitted by the specified time. When this does not occur
and the task has been submitted later in the day, a doctor’s certificate must be produced immediately upon
the student’s return to school.
III. PENALTY FOR LATE ASSESSMENT TASKS
The penalty for late assignments will be calculated at 25% deduction for each day late (this includes
weekends). The penalty is calculated on the maximum marks allocated and deducted from the actual marks
gained. This penalty applies also to students who fail to sit for exams without satisfactory explanation.
Any task not completed by a student, without adequate reason, will result in the award of a ZERO mark and
your parents will be informed immediately by the KLA Coordinator. If you do not complete tasks worth
more than 50% you will have neither an Assessment nor an Examination Mark recorded on your HSC – this
could make you ineligible for the HSC.
IV. CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM
If you are found to be cheating in an assessment task (including formal examinations) you will be awarded a
zero mark and your parents will be notified.
Plagiarism is considered cheating and will result in a penalty of some or all marks depending on the extent of
the plagiarism.
Plagiarism is the presenting of the words and ideas of others as if they were your own. It includes copying
sections from books, articles or websites without indicating a quotation and acknowledging the author.
Paraphrasing (changing a passage into your own words) is also plagiarism when the author of the original
works is not acknowledged. Taking or copying from other students and presenting it as your own are also
plagiarism.
V. ASSESSMENT TASKS AND TECHNICAL ISSUES
The use of e-mail as a means of submitting assessment tasks is not acceptable. The College accepts no
responsibility for the loss of work by e-mail. Tasks submitted by e-mail will not be accepted and the task will
incur late submission penalties until it is submitted personally to the subject teacher. Only in some
exceptional circumstances and in strict individual cases may the subject teacher negotiate with the student
or parent for a task to be submitted electronically.
Technical problems with computer printer will not be considered to be an acceptable form of misadventure
for the late submission of an Assessment Task. Students and parents should be aware of this College policy
that the loss of electronic work for assessment through failure of computer systems or devices is not a valid
excuse for extension or non-submission.HSC HIGHER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE
ASSESSMENT POLICY AND PROCEDURES 2017 - 2018
Students must make backup copies of files which could be handed in by the due time, regularly print their
working drafts and keep their drafts composed on paper to support the late final submission. This policy also
applies to printing (ink and toner shortages) as facilities are available via the school library network to print
hardcopy assessment.
VI. FRACTIONAL TRUANCY
Students who truant from school/class in order to complete an assessment task will have part or all of their
assessment task mark deducted. The Assessment Review Team will determine this.
Students absent the day before a task is due, or for a period of time prior to submission/completion must
provide a Doctors Certificate.
Part 4: Misadventure Appeals
In cases where a student feels that her preparation or performance in an assessment task or examination
has been affected by conditions other than medical, she may apply for a Misadventure Appeal through the
Assistant Principal Curriculum and the case will be reviewed by the Assessment Review Team (see below).
For the HSC examinations in October / November, NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Misadventure
Appeal forms are to be requested through the Administration Coordinator.
Part 5: Disability Provisions
During College examinations and for assessment tasks that are given a set time to complete in class, special
provisions will be made for students with disabilities or medical conditions which meet NSW Education
Standards Authority (NESA) guidelines. You must see the Learning Enhancement Coordinator or the Assis-
tant Principal Curriculum to apply for disability provisions. Disability provisions, if approved by the NSW Ed-
ucation Standards Authority (NESA), apply to the HSC examinations also.
Part 6: Assessment Review Teams / Appeals
The Assessment Review Team will meet when a student has neglected to follow the prescribed procedure
for the submission of an assessment task.
The Assessment Review Team will consist of the Assistant Principal Curriculum, the KLA Coordinator and the
subject teacher for each particular assessment mark. (At appropriate times the Year Coordinator may be
involved in the review process). The Assessment Review Team will decide on the appropriate action to be
taken in each individual case. Parents and students will be informed of the team’s decisions.
In extraordinary cases, the Principal will also be part of the Assessment Review Team and will make the final
determination.
In the case of a student appeal against an assessment mark, the student must initially request this through
the subject teacher who will inform the KLA Coordinator. If the issue is not resolved, it is to be referred to
the Assistant Principal Curriculum.HSC HIGHER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE
ASSESSMENT POLICY AND PROCEDURES 2017 - 2018
Part 7: Communication to Parents / Carers
Students and parents / carers will be notified by means of the following letters when the appropriate
assessment procedure has not been followed. Where practical, this information will also be supported by
telephone communication or (when necessary) a meeting at the College.
I. ASSESSMENT TASK PENALTY LETTER
This is issued when the assessment task has been submitted late without valid written documentation and a
penalty has been incurred.
II. NON-COMPLETION OF COURSE WARNING LETTER
This is issued when two or more assessment tasks in one subject have not been submitted and a zero mark
has been awarded and the student is in danger of not meeting the course outcomes. This also can apply to
students who do not make suitable arrangements to resit a missed task through illness or misadventure.
III. ABSENCE WARNING LETTER
This is issued when the student has missed a significant amount of time either in a single course or a number
of courses and has been deemed by the Principal that she is in danger of not meeting the course criteria and
the course outcomes.
IV. PLAGIARISM NOTIFICATION LETTER
This is issued where plagiarism has been found in a task and a penalty has been incurred.
Part 8: Reporting Student Achievement (subject to revision)
Students are to receive feedback regarding their performance in Assessment Tasks as soon as practicable.
Examinations are scheduled for Year 11 at the end of Term 3. Parent / teacher meetings are held at the
beginning of Term 2 and mid-Term 4 for Year 11 students.
Examinations are scheduled for Year 12 at the end of Term 1 (Half-Yearly Examinations) and the beginning of
Term 3 (Trial HSC Examinations). Parent / teacher meetings are in Term 2 for Year 12 students.
Each report will contain:
- Raw Examination Mark;
- Cumulative Assessment Mark;
- Position in course (based on cumulative assessment mark);
- Development of the course outcomes;
- Teacher’s comments on the student’s progress
Students will also receive Progress Reports.
Note: The final cumulative assessment mark will not be included in the Year 12 Trial Examination report.HSC HIGHER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE
ASSESSMENT POLICY AND PROCEDURES 2017 - 2018
Part 9: Review of Assessment (End of Year 12)
Rank Order Printout
Following completion of the HSC examinations in Year 12, each student can download their rank order from
students online, giving her ranking in each subject. If a student’s position does not conform to her expecta-
tions, based on feedback from the assessment items, then the student may appeal.
Appeals
A student may appeal to the College for a review of an assessment if her position in the Order of Merit
differs significantly from her expectations. The student may appeal about the procedures for arriving at
their position in the order, not the marks awarded at the time it is returned. If the student is dissatisfied
with the College review, she may appeal to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) against the con-
duct of the College review.
All appeals must be referred to the Assistant Principal Curriculum in the first instance.
The College review will consist of the student, KLA Coordinator, Assistant Principal Curriculum and the
Principal.
Part 10: Acknowledging Student Achievement
A. YEAR 11
Students who have demonstrated a high level of academic excellence and / or an outstanding level of effort
and application in a significant number of their subjects will be awarded with certificates in recognition of
these achievements at a College assembly at the end of Term 2 and at the Awards Ceremony at the end of
Term 4.
Year 11 students achieving first place in their Preliminary subject will also be acknowledged at the Awards
Ceremony. The Most Outstanding Student in Year 11 will also be acknowledged at this time. This is
determined by the best performance in assessment across all Preliminary subjects studied.
B. YEAR 12
Students who have demonstrated a high level of academic excellence and/or an outstanding level of effort
and application in a significant number of their subjects will be awarded with certificates in recognition of
these achievements at a College assembly at the end of Term 2 (for July reporting session) and at the Year
12 Graduation Dinner.
Students achieving first place in each HSC course will also be acknowledged at the Graduation Dinner along
with the Most Outstanding Academic Achievement Award recipient. The recipient of this award is
determined by the best performance in assessment across all subjects studied.
The Dux of the College Award will be awarded at a College assembly the following year along with other
Distinguished HSC Achievers.HSC HIGHER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE
