Year in Review

 2019 - 2020
2019-2020 Year in Review

The 2019-2020 edition of the Year in Review is the 3rd annual edition of the booklet. The purpose of the
Year in Review is to reflect back on the previous year’s activities and events. Each year, we also include
information about the district that might be useful to know from time to time. We hope that you enjoy the
booklet!

The 2019-2020 school year was one the will go down in history books, unfortunately not for great reasons.
Our hearts go out to our students and students state wide who missed out on spring activities due to Covid-
19. However, up until the time of the school closure, Lindsay ISD had continued to have another typically
strong year in all areas.

The year began as it has for the last 3 years, with Allison Hedrick qualifying for the State Cross Country Meet.
This year was different from previous years though as Allison was not to be denied! She is the 2019 2A Cross
Country Champion and ran in one of the best recorded times in the history of the meet! The best part is, she
is a Senior in 2020-21!

The LHS Football Team then proceeded to win the first District Title in several years. The Knights defeated
Winters in bi-district play. The team has many starters coming back this year and we are excited about the
upcoming season!

Once again the Lady Knight Volleyball program qualified for the Regional Tournament. The Lady Knights
made it all the way to the Regional Final before falling to Crawford HS, who is traditionally a tough opponent.
Like the football team, we have many talented ladies returning this season and we know that they will keep
the tradition of excellence going!

For the 4th consecutive season, the Knight Basketball Team won the District Title, going undefeated in district
play! The Knights always seem to peak at the right time, through hard work and perseverance! The Lady
Knight Basketball team also qualified for the State Play-offs and look forward to continued improvement in
2020-21.

Lindsay ISD once again proved strong academically as both the Elementary School and the JH School were
run away District Champions! The HS Academic Teams had great success at regional competitions prior to
the school closure. Our One Act Play had advanced through district competition once again before COVID
hit! We had several students who had great success in various ag-related competitions and our FCCLA team
had several students who advanced all the way to the National Competition!

Though 2020-2021 will bring unusual challenges our way, we are excited about the new year and we look
forward to seeing our students again! Regardless of what may come our way, we have no doubt that our
students, staff, and community will respond in the Lindsay way with success in all that we do!
PROGRAMS OF LINDSAY ISD

Agriculture Program - LISD offers an agricultural program that is known throughout the area for being one of
excellence. Students can participate in a variety of programs and competitions within the agricultural field as
well as learn a wide range of skills including welding, animal management, strategies for horticulture,
communication skills, and how to work as a team.

Athletics - LISD offers opportunities for student involvement in a variety of athletic competitions. For girls
we offer bass fishing, volleyball, cross country, tennis, golf, basketball, powerlifting, track, and softball. For
boys we offer bass fishing, football, cross country, basketball, golf, tennis, track, powerlifting, and baseball.

Career and Technology - Lindsay ISD believes in preparing students for life after school. Along with a wide
range of academic tracks for students to pursue, we also provide various career-based programs for those
who want to pursue a career immediately after graduation. Lindsay ISD currently offers Texas Workforce
Certifications in welding and nursing.

Cheerleading - We have a very competitive cheer program that includes our advancement to the Finals of the
State UIL competition for 2018-2019. Beginning in 2019-2020, we will have a Junior Varsity squad, allowing
more students to participate and providing a training ground for those who want to move up to the varsity
level.

Curriculum Director - For the first time in LISD history, we will also have a staff member directly assigned to
help support our curriculum needs. While LISD has traditionally performed well on state assessments, we
would like to provide additional curriculum options and programs that go over and above state assessment
needs. The new LISD Curriculum Director will help us to provide new curriculum options for students.

Dual Credit - LISD is an official “Core Complete” district. The state has identified certain classes as being
“core” or basic classes. These classes are required for all general 4-year degrees. Achieving “Core
Complete” status means that LISD offers students the opportunity to take all 42 hours of the Core
requirements. Additional courses not included in the state’s core program can also be taken, but prior
approval must be obtained.

Dyslexia – Lindsay’s Dyslexia program provides additional support for students who have been identified as
having dyslexia. Services are based upon specific needs of each individual student and include strategies for
coping with the difficulties that are brought on by dyslexia.

Elementary Counselor - For the first time in school history, LISD will have an elementary school counselor.
As time develops and our students are exposed to a wide range of social issues, we saw the need to add the
support for our students.

Fine Arts - At the High School level, LISD currently offers One Act Play. Our OAP program is second to none
as we have won several state titles and have had years of continued success in UIL competition. The program
not only offers opportunities to learn how to act, but students also learn about performance production,
stage set up and lighting, sound systems, etc. We also offer Floral Design through our Ag program. Students
learn different ideas on how to create a wide range of projects using plants of different types. Our younger
students in grades K-6 have music class twice a week. Each class performs a musical each year.

Five C’s and a T - Based on studies completed by the Texas Workforce Commission and the Texas Education
Agency, the most needed skills in today’s workplace are people with good Character. Employers are also
looking for people who can Communicate effectively and who can Collaborate well with others. The
workplace demands Creativity as well as Critical Thinking (problem solving). New and advanced Technology
skills are also needed in all facets of the modern workplace. In order to better prepare our students for life
after graduation, Lindsay ISD is in the process of creating graduate level expectations for each of these skills.
We will then “walk” the process back all the way to the Kindergarten level so that each year, each student
will be exposed to growth.

Food Service - LISD provides breakfast and lunch to all students each school day. Breakfast costs for students
in grades K-6 is $1.40. Breakfast for students in grades 7-12 is $2.75. For students in grades K-5, the lunch
price is $2.75. For students in grades 6-12, lunch is $3.00. Students at the secondary level may purchase
additional entrees at lunch.

Gifted and Talented - Students who qualify participate in this program. Students who are not currently in
the program may be assessed via parental request. The “GT” program provides an opportunity for students
to receive enriched curriculum to enhance their respective educational processes.

Health Services - Mrs. Clara Hellinger, RN, serves as the school nurse and can be contacted for any student
health-related issue. Mrs. Hellinger is the district’s coordinator for the Student Health Advisory Committee
(SHAC). The SHAC allows community members a chance to participate in the development of specific health-
related programs for all students. Specific health- related areas addressed by LISD include Anti-
drug/smoking, personal hygiene, anti-bullying, anti-drinking and driving, and sexual abstinence.

Job Shadowing - Seniors will be given the opportunity to go to the workplace of their interest area once a
month from Jan-April for 3 hours each date. Students will be expected to meet all workplace expectations as
they perform whatever task is assigned to them. Workplace partners also agree to inform students of the
different aspects of the respective business. The intent of the program is to give students hands on work
experiences and to educate them on how a real business is operated and maintained.

National Honor Society - Students who qualify for the program are given opportunities to serve the
community in a variety of ways. Students must meet district defined expectations in order to be selected for
NHS.

Response to Intervention (RTI) – RTI is a program that identifies students who need additional help in class
but who do not meet criteria specified for other areas such as dyslexia and special education. The school
administration and staff review student performance each 6 weeks. Those who are not doing well are
identified. The school, in cooperation with the parent, then develops a specific program that is designed to
help the student do better in school.

Special Education - Students who qualify for special education are given additional supports. Services are
based on the needs of each individual student. The goal of the special education department is to equip
students enrolled in the program with strategies that will help them to address various needs they may have.

Transportation - Lindsay ISD provides transportation to and from school for students who qualify, based on
the state’s transportation guidelines. The district runs 3 bus routes each morning and each afternoon. The
district also provides transportation for extra-curricular programs and activities, including field trips. LISD
also provides avenues of transportation for staff who attend professional development training and other
school-related functions.
COMMUNICATION METHODS OF LISD

LISD believes that communication is vital to the successful relationship between a school district and the
community that it serves. LISD welcomes any comments, concerns, or questions that a community member
may have in regards to the school. While we may not always find common ground with every community
member, our daily goal is to develop a system of operation that’s number one priority is the well-being the
students that we serve. The following are ways in which community members can communicate with the
school district and/or vice versa.

LISD website - The LISD web site contains a wide variety of information such as schedules of events, district
policies (including staff and student handbooks), and staff contact information. With appropriate access to
information, parents can monitor student grades and cafeteria account information. Teachers post
information regarding subject and class needs. Within the district page each campus also has its own
individual page highlighting their respective achievements and successes. Finally, the website includes
community-based information, including a history of the town of Lindsay and information about St Peters
Church. We recognize community members through the Home Town Hero Link!

School Messenger - School Messenger is a communication tool that allows us to send information
immediately to all parents, students, and staff by phone, text, and/or email. Information regarding
important dates, events, and changes to the calendar can be communicated through the School Messenger
system.

Letters - In conjunction with School Messenger and the school’s web page, we will continue to send written
correspondence home with students as another attempt to ensure that important information is being sent
to parents and the community.

The Lindsay Letter - With each edition of the “Letter”, information about school events and activities will be
included. The Letter gives a review of all school board meetings as well. Twice a month, LISD Supt., Trevor
Rogers, writes an article informing the community of school news and business. The Letter also provides a
great avenue for us to highlight our programs and student achievements!

Open Door Policy - The administration of Lindsay ISD has an Open Door Policy, meaning that we will gladly
visit with anyone who has any concerns about the district. We look forward to getting the opportunity to
meet all community members!

Facebook - The Lindsay ISD FB page is listed under “Lindsay Independent School District.” On the LISD FB
page you will see a wide range of information including student achievement announcements, important
date reminders, event and school calendar time changes, etc. During the past year, the number of page
followers has increased from 492 to 684! We encourage all LISD community members to “Like” and “Follow”
our page.

STOP-IT! App - The STOP IT! App gives anyone in the community a chance to report any form of bullying
occurring within the district. All reports can be given anonymously. All submitted reports go directly to the
administrator involved, giving school leadership the knowledge needed to pursue the situation.

BUDGET INFORMATION

The Basics of School Finance

The school finance system in its entirety is a very complicated system. Our attempt with the information
contained within this document is to inform our community, in a basic sense, of how LISD budgets the money
that we have.

Explanation of the Texas School Finance System

As with all budgets, the school budget operates with money coming in (revenue) and money going out
(expenditures). The hope is that at the end of the year the amount of revenue exceeds the amount of
expenditures.

Sources of Revenue

Under the current system, we have two major sources of revenue. One source is our local tax base. All
individuals who own property, be it personal or business related, pay property taxes. Tax amounts are based
on the value of a property. Property value is determined by the local county appraisal district’s office.
Factors that are used to determine property values include location, size, number of buildings on the
property, age/condition of the buildings, and several other factors. The other major source of revenue is the
State of Texas. For each child enrolled in the school district, the district will receive funding from the state.
For additional programs such as Gifted/Talented, Career and Technology, Special Education, and for those
students whose first language is not English, the state will give additional funding. The federal government is
also a source of revenue but the amount contributed is relatively small in relation to the amounts driven by
local property taxes and funding from the state. Most federal funding is tied directly to supporting the
educational opportunities of those students who are identified as being “At Risk.”

Expenditures

Expenditures include anything that costs the school money. Examples of expenditures include employee
salaries, the purchase of supplies/curriculum materials, maintenance of facilities, student and staff travel for
workshops and extracurricular activities, transportation needs, food service, etc. to name a few.
Budgeting Process

The key to maintaining a healthy school budget is to best determine the amount of revenue projected to
come in. We then will look at expenditures. First we will look at all current annual expenditures and
determine if we will need to budget the same amount or if we need to add more or take away from each
budget item. We will look at staff salaries and determine the amount of funds that will be needed to pay
salaries and benefits. Through the planning process, we will then look at needs that have arisen that are
specific to the new year such as a new bus, specific improvements to buildings, HVAC needs, etc. All of these
factors are used to determine a preliminary budget. If the results are showing what we want it to reflect, we
are in good shape. On the other hand, we may have to make some revisions if expenditures are too high.
We will review the needs and try to prioritize them until eventually the budget is at a satisfactory level.
