Welcome! We are so glad you joined us this season of Pentecost. May the Holy
Spirit richly bless and be with us all this time of year.
If you have any announcements or prayer requests, please let us know.
It is the mission of our church to share the love of Christ. Romans 5:5 says “God’s
love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to
us.” May the Lord be with us as we hear the Gospel and receive the Sacraments for
the strengthening of our faith and making disciples of all nations!

Holy Communion: The Lord’s Supper is celebrated at this congregation in the
confession and glad confidence that, as he says, our Lord gives into our mouths not
only bread and wine but his very body and blood to eat and to drink for the
forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with him and with one another. Our
Lord invites to his table those who trust his words, repent of all sin, and set aside any
refusal to forgive and love as he forgives and loves us, that they may show forth his
death until he comes. Because those who eat and drink our Lord’s body and blood
unworthily do so to their great harm and because Holy Communion is a confession
of the faith which is confessed at this altar, any who are not yet instructed, in doubt,
or who hold a confession differing from that of this congregation and The Lutheran
Church— Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the sacrament, are asked first to
   speak with the pastor or an usher. For further study, see Matthew 5:23f.; 10:32f.;

Hymn of Invocation: LSB 696 O God, My Faithful God

5 Let me depart this life 6 And on that final day
Confiding in my Savior; When all the dead are waking,
By grace receive my soul Stretch out Your mighty hand,
That it may live forever; My deathly slumber breaking.
And let my body have Then let me hear Your voice,
A quiet resting place Redeem this earthly frame,
Within a Christian grave; And bid me to rejoice
And let it sleep in peace. With those who love Your name.

will gather around the Baptismal Font.
Sunday Morning service will continue on page 6
The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.

P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.

P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God
our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.
P Our help is in the name of the Lord,
C who made heaven and earth.
P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,
C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.

P O almighty God, merciful Father,
C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I
have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal
punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I
pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter
sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and
merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of
the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the
command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father
and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.

Salutation and Collect of the Day: Proper 17 (Year B)

P O God, the source of all that is just and good, nourish in us every virtue and bring to
completion every good intent that we may grow in grace and bring forth the fruit of
good works; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Old Testament Reading: Deuteronomy 4:1–2, 6–9
“Now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the just decrees that I am teaching you, and do
them, that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of
your fathers, is giving you. You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from
it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I command you. . . .
Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight
of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a
wise and understanding people.’ For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as
the LORD our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? And what great nation is there, that
has statutes and just decrees so righteous as all this law that I set before you today?
“Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes
have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to
your children and your children’s children.”
P This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
                                               6
Gradual Psalm 34:9, 19, alt.
Fear the LORD, you his saints,
for those who fear him lack nothing!
Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
but the LORD delivers him out of them all.

Epistle: Ephesians 6:10–20
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of
God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle
against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic
powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day,
and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and
having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the
readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with
which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of
salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the
Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making
supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my
mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains,
that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

P This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the seventh chapter.

[Jesus] called the people to him again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and
understand: There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the
things that come out of a person are what defile him.” And when he had entered the house
and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable. And he said to them, “Then are
you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from
outside cannot defile him, since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?”
(Thus he declared all foods clean.) And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles
him. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft,
murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness.
All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

Nicene Creed
C I believe in one God,
       the Father Almighty,
       maker of heaven and earth
and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
      the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light,
      very God of very God,
      begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father,
      by whom all things were made;
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
      and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
      He suffered and was buried.
And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
         and ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,
whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord and giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,
      who spoke by the prophets.
And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
and I look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

P It is truly meet, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give
thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our

Mary. For our sake He died on the cross and rose from the dead to put an end to death,
thus fulfilling Your will and gaining for You a holy people. Therefore with angels and

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST (Proper 17B)
We Are Cleansed and Sustained by the Word of God
Wickedness and evil come “from within, out of the heart,” and that is what defiles a
person (Mark 7:21–23). Hence, we cannot save ourselves, because we are sinful and
unclean from the inside out. But as the Lord Jesus “declared all foods clean” (Mark
7:19), so He cleanses us by His Word, the preaching of repentance and the forgiveness of
sins. Therefore, “listen to the statutes and the rules” of the Lord, “and do them, that you
may live” (Deut. 4:1). For His Word is righteous, and to live according to it is “your
wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples” (Deut. 4:6). Cling to His
Word, and also teach it “to your children and your children’s children” (Deut. 4:9). Put
on this “armor of God” by hearing and heeding what He speaks to you, that you may
“stand firm” in the evil day (Eph. 6:11–13). Gird yourself with the righteousness of
Christ, by faith in the “gospel of peace,” and take up “the sword of the Spirit, which is
the word of God,” by confessing Christ Jesus and “praying at all times in the Spirit”
(Eph. 6:14–18).

Life Thought in the Church Year for August 29 – Martyrdom
of St. John the Baptist: The devil himself drove Herod to behead
the Baptist. Satan sees Jesus in Christians and children. His
vengeance attempts to slay anyone connected to the One who
escaped the grave. Abortion’s become a spiritual battle, not just a
political issue. Our only hope lies in leaning ourselves and every little one upon the Lord of Life
(Psalm 71:6), from fertilization to forever as John did (Luke 1:41).
Audio: – “Hear the sanctity of life throughout Scripture and all year long!
LifeMoments from Lutherans For Life listens to each week’s appointed
lectionary readings with life ears and applies God’s Word to life hurts.”
