Charles P. Allen High School
Providing a high quality education for every student everyday.
Dear Students & Parents,
Welcome to a new school year at Charles P. Allen High School. This is going to be another exciting year at Charles P.
Allen! Our school has state of the art technology, beautiful windows and bright colours. We will continue to enjoy
performances in our enhanced cafeteria and cheer on our Cheetahs in our beautiful gym and artificial turf! Our learning
studios along with our study zones, academic commons and quiet zones will support your academics.
2019/2020 promises to be another great year in the long tradition of excellence that has become synonymous with C.P.
Allen High School. This practice of doing our personal best extends into the areas of academics, athletics and fine arts.
Here, you will have the opportunity to develop and hone your skills, talents and abilities to become a school and
community leader. All of this can happen when you take advantage of all that school can offer and if you apply yourself
to becoming part of the C.P. Allen team.
There is something for everyone here at CPA, from the wide range of academic opportunities to many extra-curricular
clubs, teams and activities. We have a strong culture of community and school spirit throughout the halls and with the
hard work and involvement of our Student Council, this spirit is celebrated throughout the year.
Our motto is ‘Striving for Excellence’ and it is a statement we embrace as a community in our staff, volunteers and
students. The best high school memories are made when you strive to do your personal best, become involved and
keep a positive attitude. The staff of CPA is here for you, so please don’t hesitate when you need extra help, support
or guidance. If you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
This communication package will assist you with planning and will make the first days and weeks of the school year
more manageable. Please take the time to read the information contained in this package. If there is any important
medical information we should be aware of, it is important that you fill out the medical information forms located under
the parent section of our website and either drop them off to the main office or email them to cpah@hrce.ca. I also
encourage you to log into PowerSchool Student/Parent Portal regularly to check attendance and marks (see Web-Based
Student Information System on page 4).
Once again, welcome to the new school year. We look forward to meeting our new Cheetahs at grade 10 orientation
on August 29, 2019. Please check the website regularly for new information regarding our first day of school on
Thursday, September 5, 2019. I wish all of you success this school year!

3A LETTER FROM YOUR STUDENT COUNCIL CO-PRESIDENTS!
Hey CPA!
We hope you're as excited as we are for this upcoming school year - it’s going to be awesome! We are
thrilled to have you as members of the family we call CPA. There are going to be ups and downs, but we
hope you’ll come out of this year as a better human and one that had a lot of fun! Grade 10’s, you might be
a little nervous for this year, but don’t be! Go out on Day 1 and make the most of your time at CPA. To the
grade 11’s, this year is going to fly by and soon you’ll be a senior, so make every minute count! And to our
seniors, make this a year to remember and cap off your high school career with a bang. This is shaping up
to be another great year to be a student at CPA, with the return of some of our classic events as well as a
few new ones to change things up a little. Get involved and show your school spirit!
If you only take one thing away from reading our little spiel, let it be this- make the most of every minute
because high school is going to fly by, and you don’t want to leave with any regrets. You don’t want to be
sitting there when you’re 90, wishing you had maybe put yourself out there a little more, or wishing you had
gone to more events or to that tryout, so do it now while you have the chance!
Anyway, that’s enough from us for now!
Can’t wait to see what this year has in store for all of us!
Parker and Devon

12 Simple Suggestions for a Successful Transition to High School
(Friendly hints to help parents survive 10th grade)
1. Be involved in your child’s academic program.
Make sure that your child is challenged and taking courses now that will help meet future goals. Choose courses based
on your interests.
2. Get your child involved in a positive activity…but don’t overextend.
Research says that students involved in an activity, club, sport, music, etc.., are much more likely to have a positive high
school experience and get better grades than students who are not involved.
3. Know your child’s friends.
Research says that when a teenager is faced with a critical decision the influence of peers (positive and negative) and
parents/families make the difference.
4. Register for PowerSchool.
This enables you to track your child’s attendance and grades from your computer. PowerSchool will allow you to track
your child’s assignments, projects and tests. Schedules will be finalized the day before school begins in September. A
floor plan of the school is in your Welcome Package and in the student handbook located on the main page of the
website – have your child use this to locate his/her classrooms!
5. Have your child attend the Extracurricular Activity Fair during Welcome Week.
Scheduled for September 19th in the gym.
6. Attend Curriculum Night to meet your child’s teachers and follow your child’s schedule.
7. Don’t allow your child to get lost in the shuffle.
In a large school a student can get “lost” or “fall through the cracks”. Research says that when a student makes
positive connections with adults (teacher, guidance counsellor, coach, etc.) it prevents this from happening.
8. Remember that all teenagers (including straight “A” students) need proper supervision.
Supervision includes on-line supervision and supervision of technology. Remember good kids make mistakes too. Let
him/her make mistakes and learn from them. Your child should always know that you love them, but make sure they
know your expectations. Know where your child is and who they are with all the time.
9. Talk to your Child.
If your child seems anxious, nervous, or withdrawn, talk to them and see what’s wrong.
10. Get to know your child’s teachers and guidance counsellor.
Stay in positive contact with the teachers and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Remember that email is a great tool for
quick information…but it’s not such a great tool for dealing with more difficult issues. Don’t fight the small battles for
your child…keep it in perspective. If you have questions or concerns, please contact us.
11. Encourage organization.
High school students are expected to assume greater responsibility for their learning. Organization is vital – encourage
good study habits, have a specific time to complete homework and use a planner. On the first day of school, your child
should be prepared with binders, loose-leaf paper, pencils or pens. Individual teachers will specify additional supplies
required.
12. Get involved in school yourself.
The most successful students I have seen are the ones in which parents are at the school, attend functions, athletic
boosters, serve on the school advisory council or some other group. In a sense these parents are the ones that are “in
the know” and they use this information to support their child and the school!
