FOUNDATION MEMBER
Term - 2017 to 2021
I am new to the Crook County Parks & Rec Board in July 2017. I have lived in Crook
County off and on for 40 years. I believe that recreation is a integral part of a healthy
and productive life; I wanted to be part of providing art and recreational programs
for our community so decided to join the board. I really enjoy the parks, museum and
library in our community. I presently serve as the treasurer for the Crook County Historical
Society Board of Directors.
Jeremy Logan / Board chair
Term - 2017 to 2019
I have been a Parks & Rec Board member since May of 2016; I have lived in Crook
County for 19 years. I feel that it is a privilege to be on the Parks & Rec Board knowing
that the decisions we make will affect the future of Crook County’s recreation and
that we have a direct impact on the livability and quality of life for the residents. My
favorite thing about our community is that anyone can get involved and have an
impact. I am also the Regional Commissioner for AYSO, the Varsity High School Soccer
Coach and a past president of the Crook County 4-H.
Darleen Henderson / Board position #3
Term - 2017 to 2021
I have lived in Crook County for five year and am new to the board as of July 2017.
There are so many exciting things happening in our community and want to be a part
of them so decided to become a part of the Parks & Rec board. In particular I am
interested in a new swimming pool, the 20- year comp plan for Parks & Rec and the
Barnes Butte trails. I am on the Central Oregon Trail Alliance (COTA) Board of Directors
and the Steering Committee for “Crook County on the Move” a new initiative to help
Crook County residents keep moving, be nourished and stay refreshed.
Carol benkosky / Board position #4
Term - 2017 to 2021
I moved to Prineville in 2012 and recently retired from 35 years of working for the
US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. Because of the wide
variety of places I have worked, I have a good understanding of the pressures
and needs of managing land to provide a wide variety of recreational
experiences. Prineville is truly blessed with a wonderful Park system that I believe
is an incredible asset to our community.

and lived there till 2010. I majored in Outdoor Leadership from Simpson University in
Redding, CA, and just recently obtained my masters in Experiential Education from
Minnesota State University, Mankato. I have worked in the outdoor and recreation
industry for the past 9 years and guided for various organizations. I am excited to work
for CCPRD and bring my recreation experience to Prineville. In my spare time I like to
go on adventures with my wife Kayla and our two kids Gavin and Elsie. I enjoy cycling,

September of 2017. I have lived in Crook County since January of 2002. I enjoy working
for Parks & Rec for the exciting environment it offers and I enjoy helping people. I am
currently in college as well; I am seeking a degree in Business and Computer
Information Science.
Donna Dehaan / Business manager
I recently started with CCPRD beginning my new career as Business Manager in June
2018. I worked over 25 years as a medical transcriptionist at the Madras and
Prineville hospitals along with moonlighting at home transcribing for private clinics in
the evenings. I am very excited to put my business administration degree to use after
my detour so many years ago! My grandparents moved to Prineville in 1948 making
me a third generation Crook County resident and have lived in Prineville the majority
of my life moving away briefly for college. I raised my son and daughter here and now
two of my grandchildren are being raised here as well. In my spare time I enjoy
exploring the Ochocos, camping, hunting, fishing, riding my ATV, geocoaching and
spending as much time with my husband and family as possible. My other happy
place is the Oregon Coast where I try to go multiple times a year. Taking cruises is also
a passion, having just completed #7 with my Mom to Alaska last year. I am blessed to
live in such a wonderful community that offers so many recreational opportunities for
all ages and look forward to meeting new people as we cross paths here in the office
or out and about in this amazing place I am very happy to call home.

Fall 2018
In 2014 with a growing need for youth football in our community and no local options,
Bryan and Tory Kurtz stepped up and started a flag football league. Fast forward 5
seasons and not only do we have a flourishing flag football
program but just finished an amazing inaugural season with
our 5th and 6th grade tackle football program.
The Cowboy tackle program went undefeated in the Central
Oregon league. With a turnout that was beyond our
expectations, we fielded a team of 24 kids, (a league
maximum), and had several more on the waiting list. Due to
this, we hope to expand and have 2 teams next year.
With a new and growing tackle program, it should come as
no surprise that the flag program continues to expand as well. If one were to drive by
Davidson Field on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evening in September or October,
you would see just how popular and needed this program is. With 4 fields and as many
as 8 teams playing at once, you would find hundreds of people scattered over the
beautiful and historic Davidson Field cheering on the player’s while the players younger
siblings play tag and practice their cartwheels. The flag football program has become
not only an opportunity for football but an opportunity for families to spend quality time
together. This year we registered 130+ kids, giving us 14
teams, playing in 3 different age groups ranging from 1st
to 7th grade. These numbers make our flag football
program amongst the largest in the state. With the
overwhelming popularity and rapid growth in 2017, we
decided to join the NFL flag, football program, which not
only gives us access to specialized NFL jerseys but gave
us the opportunity to take a team to regionals in Seattle,
Washington in November 2017. With reports of a great
tournament, we had high hopes to send multiple teams
in 2018; however, the tournament was played before
the start of our season. This unfortunate news spurred the
decision to host our own tournament and invite all the
teams that were registered for the NFL program around
the state. We were able to host a two-day tournament
with 8 teams for our 3rd and 4th grade division. We had
amazing weather and had a fantastic tournament that has created some buzz around
the state, which has us eagerly anticipating a bigger tournament for next year. For the
2019 season, we will be hosting a two-day tournament with spots for 16 teams in both the
3rd and 4th grade and 5th and 6th grade division.
Fantastic coaching and amazing volunteers make these programs not only
possible but successful. We are excited to see what the future holds for
Crook County Football.

skate park & pickleball courts ochoco creek park In 1992 a group of local skateboarders decided it was time for Prineville to have a Skate Park. They rallied the troops and raised funds to pour concrete abutments and bend steel to make ramps. This volunteer homemade park has been home to many skaters over the years. As time has it, the asphalt surface finally gave in to effects of Central Oregon sunshine and the cracks became a serious liability. There have been a number of efforts over the years to try and raise funds to build a new professional Skate Park but to no avail. Not until a group involved in a leadership training program put on by the Ford Family Foundation here in Prineville put their minds to improving the surface of the Skate Park. These folks raised over $20,000 and contracted with Dreamland Skate Parks to come in and secure the ramps and create a new smooth concrete surface. The young people loved it and this project sparked the question; why can’t we raise enough money to build a modern concrete Skate Park? And so it began… Fundraisers, public outreach, design meetings, grant writing, three years of hard work and some losing hope along the way, we have finally landed a large Local Government Grant from the Oregon State Parks Commission and we are ready to build! Along with all of the Skate Park enthusiasm, there was also a separate group of “die hard’s” that use the old run down tennis courts to play Pickleball. Pickleball is a fun social sport that tend to bring out the youthful spirit in the young at heart. These dedicated folk have reached into their back pockets and donated funds to help convert the haggard courts to new Pickleball courts. The grant and donations that we received will be used to renovate and expand the Skate Park, renovate the old tennis courts and convert them to Pickleball courts, add parking along Juniper St, add lighting and surveillance cameras to the site and add new landscaping. This project is planned for spring / summer 2019! 18 www.ccprd.org

mica stafford / sports & fitness
For Prineville native Mica Stafford, dance has been a part of her life since childhood.
Growing up she studied various dance disciplines such as ballet, jazz and tap at High
Desert Dance Arts, under the tutelage of Ms. Caroline Kaiser. She added gymnastics to
her repertoire at the age of 8 and progressed in the sport, ultimately being coached
by and competing for famed Coach Bela Karolyi out of Houston, TX. Mica continued to
pursue dance during her college years, studying modern dance at Portland Community
College. When the opportunity arose to become the owner/director of HDDA, Mica
could imagine no better way to help spread her vision of bringing arts to the community
as well as providing a place to encourage students to express themselves and to love
the art of dance, both as a recreational pursuit and in the competitive realm.
michael boyd / firearm safety
Michael has been a sworn law enforcement officer for 33 years; he has been
working as a firearms instructor for at least that long also. Michael has taught
thousands of students to safely and competently use firearms in law enforcement
and the civilian world since the 1980’s. Michael is a multi-certified firearms
instructor who recognizes the National Rifle Association and the Oregon

is 73 years old and retired from a career of oceanography which involved studying
undersea volcanoes. Ron played and taught tennis lessons for Parks & Rec and now
teaches pickleball. Although he has played many sports, pickleball is his favorite
because it is easy to learn and incorporates good exercise and enjoyable social
interaction. Currently there are 90+ players in the local play group which started in
the fall of 2014. Pickleball is a sport for all ages and Ron feels that everyone should
give it a try to see if it is for them.
dean bonanno / Youth karate instructor
I have been involved in athletics all my life. I played football, wrestled and did track
and field in HS. In college I continued to play football and wrestle. I have 5 children;
4 girls and a boy. The three older girls signed up for the Adult Karate class through
Crook County Parks and Rec. After 6 months, I signed up for the class too and it has
been a great journey and experience since. I am currently a second degree black
belt in Shudokan Karate. I am in my 10th year of training under Sterling Osborne, who
has taught the Adult Karate Class through Parks and Rec for almost 25 years. I
inherited the Youth Karate class from my daughter and have been teaching for the
last 3 years.

30 www.ccprd.orgOchoco Gym Breaths New Life
Two years. That’s how long Crook County Parks and Recreation District has been
in conversation with Housing Works about the Ochoco Gym. Well, on November
7th we got the keys. Anyone that has lived in and been a part of sports programs
in Prineville knows that gym space comes at a premium, and through the
revitalization of the Ochoco Gym we hope to relieve some of that pressure. In
addition to new sports programs, we hope to utilize the gym for new day camps,
birthday parties, events, and recreation classes. Since taking possession of the
gym we have been able to offer a Dance class through High Desert Dance Arts,
birthday parties, a two-day basketball camp for 3rd-5th graders, and as we look
forward to the future, we are excited to offer many more opportunities.
With the operation of the gym underway, we are excited to move forward two
highly demanded sports in 2019; indoor soccer and adult league basketball.
AYSO is one of the largest youth leagues in Crook County and through a vision
brought forth by the league commissioner, Jonny Oelkers, we are excited to
partner with and create the Prineville Soccer Club. Through this strategic
partnership, we will be able to use the soccer program expertise of Jonny and
the administrative personnel and function of CCPRD to create an indoor
soccer program that meets the growing needs and desires of our community for
a winter soccer program. With a program such as this, students that desire to
play will now have the option to work on their skills in an indoor environment.
In the two years that I have worked for the Parks and Recreation District, I
cannot count the number of times I have taken calls or in-person requests for an
adult basketball league. With the new access to Ochoco Gym, CCPRD is going
to start offering open gym in February of 2019, with the desire to start a league in
the winter of 2020.
These are just a couple of ways that Crook County Parks and Recreation District
is striving to bring new recreational programming to the community. You can
also look forward to dodge ball nights, Archery Tag, NERF nights, film festivals and
much more as we make the Ochoco Gym a gathering place for all.
