Welcome to the
Snead State Community College
Dual Enrollment Program!
Congratulations on becoming a part of the Snead State Community College family by participating in the
Dual Enrollment Program!
Dual enrollment allows students to receive both high school and college credit for courses taken while
they are still in high school. The courses are part of the students’ regular school schedule.
You are now part of a successful tradition. Snead State has proudly awarded college certificates and
degrees to dual enrollment students before they have received their high school diploma. Snead State’s
faculty and staff work closely with your high school counselor and are available to assist you in finding
success as a Dual Enrollment student.
What does it take
to be an SSCC
Dual Enrollment
Student?
• Meet the entrance requirements for Snead State Community College.
• Be in the 10th, 11th or 12th grade in high school.
• Have a minimum cumulative (unweighted) high school grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0
scale.
• Get written approval from your principal or your career and technical education program represen-
tative (if applicable) and your counselor.
• Take a state-approved college placement test, where minimum placement is required, specifically for
college-level English, math, or reading courses. (Students in 10th or 11th grade registering only for
career and technical courses may take a state-approved college placement test prior to registering
for dual enrollment classes in 12th grade.)
*Snead State Community College has the right to restrict a student’s enrollment on the basis of academic
readiness, social maturity, health and safety concerns, course availability, and/or local institutional pol-
icy. Dual enrollment students who fail to meet a grade of C or better in all attempted college courses or
who withdraw from a course will be suspended from the Dual Enrollment program for a minimum of one
tern. The on-term suspension may not be served during the summer.

2021-2022 DUAL ENROLLMENT HANDBOOK | Page 15Frequently Asked questions
1. What is Dual Enrollment?
Dual Enrollment offers high school students an opportunity to complete college-level coursework that will
meet the requirements for high school graduation and may be applied toward a college degree.
2. Will I need to take the ACT before I take Dual Enrollment classes?
A placement score is needed to determine students’ eligibility for certain classes, such as English or math.
The ACT is one exam that is used, and the other is ACCUPLACER, available through Snead State Community
College.
3. How do I pay for classes?
Snead State offers a payment plan to assist you in paying the tuition and fees for your classes. Payment
plans are agreements with a third party, not Snead State. Payment plans will not show up on your student
account until the next business day, so please allow plenty of time to apply prior to registering for classes.
4. How do I know if I’m eligible for Dual Enrollment?
The criteria for being a Dual Enrollment student are outlined on page 3, but if you are in the 10th, 11th or
12th grade in high school and have a cumulative, unweighted GPA of 2.5, we recommend that you speak
with your counselor about the program.
5. How do I get started?
Complete the admissions process to become a Snead State student. Complete and submit all of the re-
quired Dual Enrollment forms. Take the ACCUPLACER test, or submit your ACT scores to the Student Ser-
vices office. Log into OneACCS to register for classes. (You receive your log-in information when you are
admitted as a student.) Pay for your classes. To stay on track for becoming a Dual Enrollment student, use
the checklist on Page 14.
6. If my high school is closed for any reason, am I still required to attend my Dual Enrollment class?
Dual Enrollment students must follow the academic calendars of both their high school and Snead State.
For example, if your high school is closed due to a holiday or inclement weather, but Snead State is open,
you are required to attend your college class and complete assignments as assigned. If Snead State is
closed, but your high school is open, then you must attend your high school. It is the student’s responsibili-
ty to be familiar with the academic calendars of both their high school and Snead State.
7. How much are Dual Enrollment classes?
Dual Enrollment students pay Snead State tuition and fees based on the number of semester credit hours.
Payment is required at the time of registration for classes. Dual Enrollment students are also required to
purchase books and materials for each class.
8. Do Dual Enrollment courses transfer to other colleges and universities?
In most cases, Snead State courses do transfer to other colleges and universities. Students can refer to
the STARS Guide for the college or university in which they are interested to determine which Snead State
courses will transfer in their program of study.
9. Do I qualify for grants or scholarships to pay for my Dual Enrollment classes?
Dual Enrollment students are not eligible to apply for Pell Grants or student loads because to qualify, stu-
dents must already have a high school diploma or GED credential. Scholarships through Snead State are
not available for Dual Enrollment.
2021-2022 DUAL ENROLLMENT HANDBOOK | Page 16Frequently Asked Questions
10. Can Dual Enrollment students withdraw from a course after it begins?
Yes, but students should consult their instructor and their high school counselor before doing so. After the
last day to Register or Add a class, students are responsible for paying for the course, and dropping it is
no longer an option. At this point, students may WITHDRAW from a course. If a student withdraws from a
class OR makes below a “C,” he must sit out a semester, and that “sit out” semester may not be during the
summer.
11. If I take college courses in high school, will that make me ineligible for freshmen scholarships to
attend college after high school?
No. No matter how many Dual Enrollment courses you complete in high school, you would still be consid-
ered a freshman entering into college and would be eligible for freshmen scholarship awards.
12. What do credit hours assigned to a course mean?
Credit hours are the value assigned to a particular course, and the total number of credit hours you earn
is applied to the earning of your Associate degree. Credit hours do not refer to the length of a class or the
time of day for a class.
13. What classes can I take as a Dual Enrollment student?
Students may enroll in any classes for which they have qualifying placements scores and for which they
have met prerequisite course requirements. Prerequisite requirements for courses are listed in the course
descriptions in the College Catalog.
14. If I take Dual Enrollment classes, am I automatically enrolled as a full-time college student once I
graduate high school?
No. Dual Enrollment students attending Snead State after their high school graduation are required to
re-apply for admission. The completion of the admission process is also a requirement for applying to the
scholarships awarded by Snead State.
15. What is the difference between Dual Enrollment and Advanced Placement credit?
Students completing an Advanced Placement course receive high school credit, but they have to earn a
passing score on the end-of-the-course AP exam to earn subsequent college credit for the course. Students
successfully completing a Dual Enrollment class automatically receive both high school and college credit
for the course.
16. What is the different between Dual Enrollment and Accelerated students?
Accelerated high school students enroll in college courses for college credit only. Dual Enrollment students
enroll in college courses for both college credit and high school credit.
17. When and where can I take a Dual Enrollment class?
Classes may be offered at your high school or at Snead State’s Boaz campus. Students may enroll in day or
evening classes at Snead State or in online classes.
18. How do I choose what Dual Enrollment classes to take?
Refer to Page 7 for a list of our most popular Dual Enrollment classes. You may also consult a faculty advi-
sor on choosing the right classes for you.
