1. Introduction

The DHU 2020 "Personalized medicine for chronic diseases", provider of the organization of 2016 Autumn
school, brings together the strengths of healthcare, teaching and biomedical research from 2 Nantes
institutes: l’institut du thorax and l’institut des maladies de l’appareil digestif (IMAD), along with the
humanities and social sciences (HSS) strengths of the "Standards, Diseases and Societies" topic, CNRS team
UMR 6297 "Law and Social Change".
These structures are built around a translational project ranging from premature to elderly subjects and
aimed at promoting the development of personalized medicine for chronic diseases. 4

The present report on the third training event “Fibrosis and remodeling: from common pathways to
personalized targets” is part of the training initiatives of DHU 2020 to its graduate and post-graduate
students (Science, Medicine and HSS) and staff, focusing on personalized medicine for chronic diseases and
on the transformations induced by this concept.

According to the participants’ opinions, the meeting was an exciting fibrosis and remodeing symposium,
which presented the highlights of interdisciplinary research, bridging biology and medicine with statistics,
imaging and computational modeling sciences.

During this 2 days’ workshop, the invited lectures, short oral communication, poster sessions and workshop
sessions provided state of the art information from the above fields and more particularly on their
integration.

In addition to the training event of DHU 2020, the meeting also represented an excellent opportunity for
scientists and doctors to share their knowledge and experience. Importantly, the meeting was supported by
the CaSyM initiative (Coordinating Systems Medicine across Europe) whose program was presented during
a session. The European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) also accredited
the event with 11 European CME credits (ECMEC).

91 participants from 7 countries attended the meeting. 21 of them were researchers, 17 were medical
doctors, and 6 Technicians or engineers. 17 of them were Master 2 Degree students (medical and
scientists), 17 were PhD students (science and HSS) and 2 post-doctoral researchers. Thus, the objective to
attract graduate and post-graduate students was reached with 39,6 % of participants.
It is to note that all participants received a certificate of attendance. The certificate helps students (Master
degree and PhD students) to get their training approved by our local University. No participant asked for
CME credits.

    3.3. Workshops

During the meeting, two series of 3 workshops have been organized successively, to allow participants to
attend at least 2 workshops.
A total of 54 Participants attended the workshops, where 6 tutors were at the student’s disposal. The tutors
were professors from local or foreign institutions who were responsible for the preparation of the course
materials for students.

The workshop of C. Dina and F. Simonet was about the use of genetic statistics to identify target tissues.
They presented Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and discuss how it can help unravel the
molecular mechanisms through which genetic variation causes disease.
Participants could follow step by step a GWAs analysis, evaluate the results and review various tools
(bibliography, public databases) to identify pathways involved in human diseases. It was a good hands-on
tutorial. Despite the interest of the topic, only a few students participated to this tutorial, as it was a very
targeted and specific course.

The general opinion of participants was that N Piriou and F. Vailland presented a very stimulating and
interactive workshop session, as evidenced by the number of participants. They dealt with the technics and
applications of imaging of cardiac remodeling. They described various technics of cardiac imaging, such as
ultrasounds, magnetic resonance… and show their applications « from bench to bedside », with examples
in clinical practice and in animal models of cardiac disesases, illustrating the fundamental role of
remodeling imaging in clinical and pre-clinical research.

The last workshop was presented by N. Theret and J. Coquet around computational modeling and cell
signaling. Despite a very specific area, they also had a great success.
Participants, after a brief survey of different approaches used for dynamic modeling of cell signaling, could
become familiar with Kappa language and its application for modeling the extracellular matrix networks
involved in the activation of the transforming growth factor TGF-β.

Overall, the workshop participation was a success (59,3% of meeting participants) and participants were
very enthusiastic about the topics and how the workshops were conducted.

3.4. Short oral communication and poster session

A part of the interactivity of the event was short oral communications and poster sessions.
10 abstracts were received and reviewed by the local scientific committee. In order to give the opportunity
to young scientists and medical doctors to present their work, all abstracts were selected to be presented
as a poster and a short oral communication.

Concerning short oral presentations, speakers had 10 minutes for their presentation. Questions concerning 13

the presentation were asked during the poster session, were selected speakers had 5 minutes to present
their work. Tutors chosen among the local scientific committee were asked to challenge the young speakers
with questions and run an active discussion among students and participants.

The common opinion was that presentations selected were on a high scientific level and well-presented
and students participated successfully to the discussion.
Despite the low number of abstracts, there were more submitted abstracts than last year, with foreign
participants.

5. Conclusion

To conclude, we can say that the 3rd DHU 2020 Autumn school “fibrosis and remodeling: from common
pathways to personalized targets” was a very exciting meeting, with high-level speakers and focus on
successful examples of research and practice of systems medicine.

According to the survey and questionnaire, the attempts were very successful and useful for all participants
and trainees.
                                                                                                                 18
Concerning the participation, there were fewer participants than for the last edition (91 vs 108 participants
in 2015), but with a great proportion of graduate and post-graduate students, thus reaching the teaching
objectives of this DHU2020 Autumn school.

Although we can point out that there have been little foreign participants, the meeting was very fruitful in
terms of national and international networking, particularly with invited speakers.
Indeed, the autumn school was also the occasion of short meetings organized on the sidelines of the
congress for the development of new collaborations.

Finally, given the success of this edition and that of the previous year, this event will be renewed under the
same format in autumn 2017.

  Dear Sir or Madam,

The DHU2020 ”Personalized medicine for chronic diseases”, brings together the strengths of
healthcare, teaching and biomedical research from 2 institutes in Nantes, France : l’institut du
thorax and l’institut des maladies de l’appareil digestif (IMAD), along with the humanities and social
sciences (HSS) strengths of the "Standards, Diseases and Societies" topic, CNRS team UMR
6297 "Law and Social Change". These structures are built around a translational project ranging
from premature to elderly subjects and aimed at promoting the development of personalized
medicine for chronic diseases. It was established in 2013 by the Université de Nantes, the Nantes
University Hospital and Aviesan, the French Alliance for Life and Health Sciences.
The DHU2020 aims to develop training initiatives to its graduate and post-graduate students
(Science, Medicine and HSS) and staff, focusing on personalized medicine for chronic diseases
and on the transformations induced by this concept.

Since 2014, DHU2020 annually organizes its Autumn School with foreign and domestic lecturers.
This school brings 110 to 120 participants each year, from which more than 40 % are science or
  medicine graduate and post-graduate students.

The 3rd Autumn school entitled “Fibrosis and remodeling : from common pathways to personalized
targets” , will take place in Nantes, France, from 27th to 28th October 2016 at the Chambre de
Commerce et d’Industrie de Nantes- Saint Nazaire. The School will be European, with the support
of our collaborative European networks. Chair of the organizing committee is Prof. Bertrand Cariou
(Faculty of Medicine, Nantes University and Nantes University Hospital). All lecturers have
extensive and highly cited bibliography in the field of fibrosis, remodeling and personalized
medicine. The Autumn School is an excellent opportunity for social networking of young future
scientists and doctors with senor colleagues and to exchange knowledge and experience.

sessions, and 3 workshop sessions dedicated to master degree students, doctoral and post-
doctoral students, researchers, medical doctors and other medical professionals. The Autumn
school will include problem-based discussion, active participation in methodological approaches for
personalized medicine based workshops and oral presentation of young participants. 7 hours of
lectures and 2 hours of practical work will be carried out through the event. The acquired
knowledge will be examined at the end of the meeting. Participants will receive a certificate of
attendance.

We kindly ask the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to approve
and accredit the school with European CME credits. We suggest accrediting the course with 10
European CME credits.

Yours sincerely,

                                                                          Prof. dr. Bertrand Cariou,
