                                   Volunteer Opportunities

Help Plant a Tree Belt – Earn a Raptor Program! Community
Service Opportunity
Would your 4-H Club like a fun way to donate hours to a community service, and earn a free program
from the Black Hills Raptor Center? Help plant trees!

Donate 20 hours (combined from all the Club members who help) to the Black Hills Raptor Center and
help plant 341 trees on their new property east of Rapid City along Highway 44.
In return, the volunteers of the Raptor Center will present a free program with the avian ambassadors
to your Club sometime in the next 12 months.

The trees and shrubs are saplings from the Pennington Conservation District. They are all South
Dakota native species. They will also need to be watered and weeded this summer, and the fencing
checked for openings and weak spots.

For more information or to sign up, please contact Maggie Engler at the Raptor Center. Best is
info@blackhillsraptorcenter.org Or call 605-391-2511 and leave a message if Maggie doesn’t answer.

Cemeteries; for Hot Springs National Cemetery, placement will be on May 29, 2021 at 9am and
removal will occur on June 5, 2021. This is an honor and beautiful sight to behold - please consider
volunteering yourself, your family, your club, etc. SPREAD THE WORD!!! *While they like you to commit
to both placing and removing your flags, flag placement volunteers are more critical because it takes
longer with measuring where the flags need to be stuck in the ground. SO, if you cannot make it to
removal but could do placement please still volunteer!* Please make a donation Everything helps

opportunity to engage in hands-on trail maintenance and learn about aspects of packing in gear with
mules and horses, being safe on the trail, leave no trace principles, trail etiquette, and proper care of
back country resources. Participants will need to bring their own horse and be comfortable with trail
riding. Parent participation with 4-H member is encouraged. Please contact Alice Allen at (605) 517-
1728 or Alan Van Bochove at (605) 391-2142 for additional information.
