Dear Elks Families:
First, Happy Thanksgiving to you all!
As you will see throughout this newsletter, the biggest news is that our own Steve Johnson has been
awarded the highest achievement within the Elks in North Carolina. Congratulations to Steve.
We continue to move along. Keeping the lodge clean and safe. My appreciation goes out to all mem-
bers that have contributed in their own way. Special thanks goes to Tim Sinnott and his never ending
efforts.
We will have a small anniversary celebration on Saturday November 14. DJ Mike will be there and we
will have hors d’oeuvres and drink specials. More details to follow in email and Facebook.
Looking forward to December and the Christmas season. Stay tuned. We are holding until we see
where we go in the “phases” to determine what we can and cannot do.

Tip of the Antlers!

This is what makes our Lodge successful!!! It takes lots and lots of volunteers. Thanks again to
everyone that takes time out of their busy schedule to help our Lodge continue to demonstrate
“Elks Care-Elks Share”.
East Central District Exalted Ruler of the Year
During the Fall convention in October, Nathan Cochrane, PER, was
awarded the 2019-2020 Exalted Ruler of the Year award for the North
Carolina East Central District. Please help us in congratulating Nathan
for this accomplishment. We look forward to many more years of Na-
than’s leadership at our lodge.
Sanford Brings Home more Awards
During the North Carolina State Convention help in October, our
lodge was able to bring home several awards. Exalted Ruler
Chris Setzer got a real workout walking form the back of the ban-
quet room to the front to accept all these awards. Maybe next
time, he’ll learn to sit in the front of the room.
• First Place in the State for the best website.
• Third Place in the State for ENF donation for lodge sized 250
to 499. $14.82 per member.
• Steve Johnson accepted the award for the East Central Dis-
trict finishing 2nd in the State in ENF contributions. Steve is the
district chairman.

OUR OWN RECEIVES THE HIGHEST AWARD
IN THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
At the recent North Carolina State Convention held on October 31st in Myrtle Beach, Steve John-
son was awarded the coveted Thad Eure Distinguished Service Award.

Here is Steve’s nomination in its entirety.
To the Thad Eure Distinguished Service Award Committee,
The Sanford Lodge #1679 is submitting this strong recommendation for Steven Mark Johnson, PER for the
Thad Eure Distinguished Service Award. This nomination was voted on and approved in a special meeting of San-
ford Elks Lodge #1679, when Steve was absent, on August 15, 2019.
Steven M Johnson, "Steve,” was born to Nathan and Clarissa Johnson on August 30, 1963. He graduated
from Lee Senior High School in 1981 and Central Carolina Community College in 1983 with a degree in Electrical
Engineering Technology. Steve has been married to his wife Lori for 37 years. The couple were high school sweet
hearts. Steve is a wonderful husband to Lori and father to Courtney and Addison. He is a Papa to Rylan and Saylor.
Steve has dedicated his life to being the best husband, father, and grandfather he could be. When the kids were
little, he spent countless hours attending and volunteering his children’s activities. His commitment to service did
not stop with his family, but instead he continued his service into all realms of his life.

75 years of the Sanford Lodge
and the North Carolina
Thad Eure Distinguished Service Award
Thad Eure
Thaddeus A. Eure (1899-1993) served as North Carolinas Secretary of State from 1936-1989. He was the
longest serving elected official in NC state government.
Mr. Eure was a member of the Raleigh Elks Lodge. He served as NC Elks state president from 1945 to
1946. This made him the state president that instituted our lodge.
In addition he held several state and grand lodge positions during his life. He is credited as being among our
founders of the North Carolina State Elks Association.
The North Carolinas Distinguished award was established in 1967 to replace the state Elk of the Year award.
In 1987 the award was renamed The Thad Eure Distinguished Service Award.
The award is given to an Elk who has truly distinguished themselves in promoting the principles and pro-
grams of Elkdom. The candidate should also have a history of service to their community, state and country.
Many years there was no candidate that rose to the occasion so no award was presented at all. It is only
when a nomination is made that passes deep investigation and scrutiny of a committee, will a recipient be
deemed worthy.
Our lodge has had 3 award recipients in our history with our newest addition last month.
Let’s revisit those three with a renewed congratulations.
