Dear Elks Families:

The new year has started off in full speed. In just the first month of the 2021-2022 we have been able to
install our new slate of officers and bring in 16 new members just two weeks later. I would like to give a
special thanks to the new member’s sponsors. Membership is our lodge’s lifeline and we must remain
diligent in showing our friends and family the great things that our lodge has to offer.

May will also be a very busy month here at the Sanford Elks Lodge. The first weekend of the month,
some of our board members will be representing our Lodge at the North Carolina Elks Spring Convention
in Wilmington. It should be a great time of fellowship and education for our officers. May 15th, will be our
annual pool cleanup day. We will start at 9:00 am and will work until the job is done. Please come out
whether you have 30 minutes or three hours to commit. The more help we have the quicker we'll get it
done. If all goes as planned, the pool with open on Friday, May 28 (Memorial Day Weekend).
In 2021-2022 my main initiative is to be visible in the community. Increased visibility will not only allow us
to highlight all of the great things the Sanford Elks Lodge does within our community, but it will allow us
to attract new members that want to help us in our mission. My goal is to have an Elks presence at as
many community events through the summer and fall as possible. I believe that just being there, shaking
hands, and talking to people about all the Elks has to offer will allow See ER Message on page 2

Memorial Day is on May 31st, the last Monday of May. This date was set aside in the early 1860’s for the
practice of decorating servicemen’s graves with flowers. Memorial Day, as we know it today, was officially
declared a Federal Law in 1967. In the traditional observance, our flag is flown at half-staff until noon sym-
bolizing a nation in mourning. The flag is then raised to full staff, by the living, who resolve not to let their
sacrifice be in vain but, rise up in their stead and continue our fight for liberty and justice for all. Justice is a
cardinal virtue of all Elks.

                   Tip of the Antlers!
A great big “hoof clappin” Tip of the Antlers to:

PER, and Steve Johnson, PDDGER for assisting with the 2021-2021 Officer Installation.
 To the out going officers for serving the Lodge and it's members during a very different year.
 To the in coming officers for your dedication to the Lodge and giving up of your time during the
next year to keep this Lodge the best the State.
 Chris Black for his generous contribution to put an Elks Banner up during the Sanford Spinners ballgames.
 Sanford Mayor and lodge member Chet Mann for provided a Youth Week Proclamation.

This is what makes our Lodge successful!!! It takes lots and lots of volunteers. Thanks again to
everyone that takes time out of their busy schedule to help our Lodge continue to demonstrate

us to build our presence in the community and make others want to be a part of our Great Lodge. To make
this possible we will need as many Elks as possible to volunteer to help. Please stay tuned for which events
we’ll be attending and let’s us know when you can help out.

I look forward to working with each and every member as we make our presence know in our community.

                                       LOCAL TEEN FUNDRAISER
Come to the Elks and you will find two loaded wagons. The Party Fun Red Wagon will be loaded with adult
beverages and party fun and chances are available in the bar. The Family Fun Blue Wagon will be loaded
with more "G rated" things and available at the pool. Members and guests are asked to buy chances on ei-
ther one or both for the July 4th drawing.
In years past the Sanford Lodge has sponsored the Cleats for Kids Program providing football cleats or track
shoes for both high school students who need help buying what they need to play. We also sponsor the
Toys for Teens program that picks up where the Salvation Army and Toys for Tots programs leave off at
Christmas. Believing that a teenager is a kid too, we provide presents for kids from 13 through 18.
Both of these have been heavily funded by the Elks National Foundation, This year that will still be the case
but due to some grant restraints, we have teamed up with Pepsi thanks to lodge member and Past Ex-
alted Ruler Vince Wenger to put together this fundraiser to merge the two programs into one and make it
bigger and better than ever.
Now we need your help. This is a signature project of the Sanford Elks, and there are none others like it.
Please consider being part of the solution and help support our goal of $ 3,000.00

held on May 15th starting at 9:00 am. Not only are we planning on clean-
ing the concession stand and chairs, we would also like to clean the pool

                                               Elks National Youth Week
The first full week in May each year is Elks National Youth Week, during which the
Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks recognize our youth for their achievements and
contributions to their community. The Elks have always known that our youth are the
future of this country. Therefore, the Elks spend much time and effort working with young
people.
More than 10 million youth participate in Elks-sponsored programs, This year May 1-7 is
Elks National Youth Week. Elks Lodges nationwide will be celebrating our youth during
this time. However, due to COVID-19 we are not able to celebrate in our traditional way
by holding a youth banquet. Our scholarship winners will be announced in next months newsletters.

                                                  Elks National Foundation
By funding Elks’ programs, the ENF strives to support local Elks’ communities. Our scholarships provide educa-
tional opportunities to kids who might not otherwise have been able to attend college.
Our youth programs such as Hoop Shoot, provide a positive environment for kids to focus their energy, while our
Drug Awareness Program educates kids about the dangers of drug use.
Our Veterans Service Program offers aid and comfort to veterans who may not have anywhere else to turn. Each
year, the Elks National Foundation gives back millions of dollars to the state Elks Association to use locally.
