Wyndcroft.org/apply/portrait-of-a-graduateAfter mandated shutdowns and distance learning last spring,Wyndcroft came back to
campus as scheduled in September and completed the school year without any further
closures. Here’s a closer look at what happened on campus this year.
Earth Day went “Unplugged” this
year at Wyndcroft. With an
emphasis on outdoor activities,
this was the perfect year to
celebrate conservation and
keeping the Earth green! Students
of all ages participated in activities
led by 8th Grade students.
For this year’s Auction,
each Wyndcroft student
helped to paint a Garden
Gnome for their grade
level. The Gnomes were
raffled off during the
online event.
As activities began to
open up around the
area, they did on
campus as well.
Wyndcroft was able to
host a Spring Dance for
the Upper School - the
first time all these
students were together
in one place all year!Wyndcroft’s 8th Grade enjoyed a week of excursions to area
attractions. Throughout the week, they visited:
• Hawk Mountain Sanctuary
• Valley Forge National Park
• The Escape Game - King of Prussia
• Refreshing Mountain Retreat and Adventure Center
• Hershey Park and Chocolate World
Students in Preschool and Kindergarten enjoyed the
annual Carnival Day celebration filled with plenty of
just-for-fun games and activities for each of our
youngest students.
Wyndcroft’s Field Day
was held on campus this
year. With many of our
favorite games, and even a
few new ones, a good time
was had by all!
Congratulations to the
GOLD team on their
Field Day victory!A look at whatWyndcroft has learned during this interesting time in our history
from Lisa Dunn, Associate Head of School
Amongst the disruption and uncertainty that the COVID-19 pandemic caused, the Wyndcroft community found many
positives. Embracing these positives and integrating them into our daily life is helping to reshape our next century of
learning.
One of the most important aspects of our return to
campus plan was to incorporate our outdoor spaces for
teaching and learning. This has become an essential part
of our future. We continue to enhance our campus to
provide outdoor spaces where Wyndcroft students can
play, explore, and learn.
Wyndcroft students have always developed strong
technology skills and were well prepared for the transition
to remote learning. However, the pandemic forced the
rapid acquisition of technology skills for all members of our
community. Going forward, it will be the balance of both
virtual and physical experiences that define learning.
Recognizing the importance of social and emotional well-
being in the development of children is essential to provide
an ideal learning environment. This was even more apparent
during the epidemic when isolation became the norm.
Wyndcroft remains committed to developing coping skills
for our students to navigate the pandemic and any other crisis
that we may individually or collectively encounter.
Our pandemic protocols provided opportunities for independence to develop in surprising ways
and for the youngest of learners. Patience, flexibility, and grace have been our mantra and a
necessity in managing this crisis, but we now look at keeping the many positives that evolved for
our future.
Contact Mrs. Dunn at ldunn@wyndcroft.orgHonors Day is the annual celebration of excellence in academics for our Upper School students.
Once again this year, Wyndcroft students had much to celebrate.
Jean B. Sawyer Award. The Jean B. Sawyer Award is given to the member of the 5th Grade
class whom the faculty believes is the embodiment of Jean’s traits and the qualities in which she
believed. Jean was a willing worker in all areas of the school, a curious student of the world
around her, an enthusiastic reader, and a positive person who always gave her best and her

achievement, sportsmanship, and service, and they seek the student who best embodies the
School’s motto Non Sibi, which means ‘not only for oneself but for the greater good of all.’The 2020-2021 school year marks the end of Mrs. Gail L. Wolter’s tenure
as Head of The Wyndcroft School.
Mrs. Wolter may have been best described by Associate Head of School
Lisa Dunn during her retirement party:
“She is professional, dedicated, kind, and truly loves kids. I have said many times
that Gail’s work ethic is unmatched.”
Let’s take a closer look at Mrs. Wolter’s time and impact on Wyndcroft.
2001-2002: Mrs. Wolter began her
tenure at Wyndcroft as the Fifth Grade English
and Social Studies teacher. Her yearbook
photo from that year is at left.
2006-2007: In 2006, Mrs. Wolter was named
Assistant Head of School, working closely with
Dr. Wunner while still teaching 5th Grade Social Studies and managing the Yearbook
with the 8th Grade. The Yearbook theme that year was “Sailing Wyndward” - hence
the Vice-Admiral status listed in the photo above.
2011-2012: Fast-forward to the fall of
2011 when Mrs. Wolter took over as
Wyndcroft’s Head of School. Here she
is pictured at left on the very first day of
school that year.
2012: Under her leadership, The Wyndcroft School successfully completed the Creating a Campus capital
campaign, which dramatically improved the physical spaces where our children learn. The first step in this
expansion was the acquisition and renovation of the Early Learning Center, now known as Marshall House.
There were two groundbreaking ceremonies for this expansion, one for the wider community and one for the
students. Pictures from both are included above.2014: The expansion of the main school building was
completed in 2014. In the spring, Mrs. Wolter along with
the students, faculty and staff signed the interior steel
pillars of the new gymnasium. Then in November, the new
expansion was celebrated at a special ceremony. At left:
Mrs. Wolter is seen signing a pillar and with Board of
Trustee members Erik Paulson and Geoffrey Gorrin at the
new school cornerstone.
Throughout her tenure, even as she was working to transform
the campus, Mrs. Wolter never forgot her love of children and
being in the classroom. She could often be found around the
main school building reading to the Kindergarten classes or
having lunch with the Upper School students. Mrs. Wolter
opened car doors each morning, welcoming kids to school, and
taking time to greet their parents as well. As Mrs. Dunn said:
“To accomplish all of this change and continue to run the day-to-day
school life is not an easy task. She is clearly a hands-on leader…
There is not a day that has gone by without Gail pulling a weed,
moving a box, or helping a student.”
No matter what Mrs. Wolter was doing, whether it was
leading a staff meeting, answering the phone, or assisting in
classrooms, she did so with grace and a smile on her face.
2018: Wyndcroft celebrated 100 years of education
during the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 school years. The celebration was capped off
in October 2018 with an evening Gala held at Meredith Manor. It was a wonderful
way for the wider Wyndcroft community to come together. Mrs. Wolter and Mrs.
Dunn are pictured at left at the event.
2021: How do you thank someone who has
meant so much to Wyndcroft? Special
celebrations for Mrs. Wolter were held as her
tenure came to a close. She had a “Lucky Day”
on St. Patrick’s Day in March and then on her
last day of school as Head of School, each
student presented her with a flower. We hope
Mrs. Wolter knows how much she meant to
the school and how much she will be missed.Mme Ida Fauth retires at the end of the school year. For 24 years, Ida has served as an inspiration to the study of the French language at Wyndcroft. From mastery of Je m’appelle to passé compose’, her students have experienced the history, geography, and culture of the many francophone coun- tries. As Mme Fauth looks forward to retirement, she plans to spend more time at the Jersey Shore as well as relishing in the role as la grand-mere’ extraordinaire to Domenic, Mikayla, and Nicholas (all pictured above with their families). Join us in thanking Ida for her dedication and service to Wyndcroft as we wish her the very best in her new adventures. Pat Kolarz retires at the end of the school year after 25 years of service at Wyndcroft. Those that were lucky enough to experience it will agree, there was something special about Kindergarten with Mrs. Kolarz. She taught with a calm demeanor and professionalism that guided young learners during this transitional stage of their education. Pat looks forward to opportunities for travel and spending time with family. Join us in thanking Pat for the dedication to Wyndcroft and wishing her the very best in this newest adventure.

The RobinsonsAfter a comprehensive,
nationwide search, we are
delighted to announce that
Dr. Tekakwitha
Pernambuco-Wise
has assumed the role of
Head of The Wyndcroft School.
Dr. Pernambuco-Wise is an accomplished leader with over 30 years of experience in the educational
administration, teaching, and counseling fields. Most recently, Dr. Pernambuco-Wise served as the Head of
School at the Sea Crest School in Half Moon Bay, California from 2013 – 2020. Prior to her headship at the Sea Crest
School, Dr. Pernambuco-Wise held Middle and High School headships at two other private schools. So for the last 15
years, she has not only led schools, but through her broad experience and passion for education, improved the public
profile of these schools, which resulted in improving trends in advancement and enrollment, demonstrated results in
diversity and inclusion efforts, and investment in academic programs. Without question Tekakwitha hit on all the
priorities, characteristics, and qualities that we decided Wyndcroft needed in our next head.
Dr. Pernambuco-Wise is a well-recognized leader in the independent school community. She is a Senior
Consultant with The Jane Group and serves on the board of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and
is a member of its Governance Committee and Business Modeling Task Force. In addition, she serves as a faculty member
and mentor for NAIS’s Aspiring Head’s Fellowship. She is a Trustee and Vice President of The Heads Network, which
promotes professional growth for independent school heads and leaders who are committed to the education of girls and
advancing women’s leadership. Dr. Pernambuco-Wise has received multiple writing and education honors and awards
throughout her distinguished career.
Dr. Pernambuco-Wise received her B.A. in Philosophy from Brown University, an M.A. in Education from the
University of Toronto, and earned her Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Saint Mary’s College of California.Upon her arrival on campus in July, we asked Dr. Pernambuco-Wise a few questions to
help the community get to know her. Here’s what she had to say:
Tell us about why you wear a flower in your hair.
I grew up in a tropical country and specifically remember the abundance of flowers
that surrounded me as a child. Upon moving to Hawai`i, I grew fond of the tradition
of wearing floral leis or flowers in my hair and this reminded me strongly of my happy
childhood days. Flowers give me a sense of cheer and wearing a flower in my hair
keeps my homeland close to me daily.
Is there a leader or mentor whose style you admire?
While there is no one person who epitomizes all of the characteristics of a
leadership style to which I aspire, I take my inspiration from those I
know well. I admire the courage and determination of my father, the
grace and compassion of my mother, the integrity and wit of my hus-
band, the wisdom and friendship of fellow school heads and persons in
my life who are calm, principled, humble and generous.
What do you like to do outside of school?
Oscar Guerrero: P’18
Judo and hula remain my favorite pastimes, although lately, my Co-Chair, Head of School Search Committee
hectic schedule keeps me from doing them as much as I would like.
I believe that in our over-scheduled lives, it is important to take Maria Shields: P’18, ’20, ’24
time for reflection and self care and so I meditate, pray, and Co-Chair, Head of School Search Committee
exercise daily; go for walks in the woods or on the bluffs; have Harry (Rocky) Citrino:
massages; travel; read; make American Indian beaded jewelry and Trustee and P’25, ’28, and ’31
Hawai`ian feather leis; and spend time relaxing with my husband
Maureen Coggins: P’20,’23, and ’24
and family. A fire burns within me to give back to the next
generation of leaders that which was given to me by numerous Jeffrey E. Gorrin: Trustee and P’12
mentors and so I get great pleasure from the work that I do with Namrata Yocom-Jan: P’26
NAIS’ Aspiring Heads Fellowship and The Heads Network’s
Women in Leadership institutes. Uldrick Jean: P’20 and ’24
How did you get started in the field of education? Jonathan Lange:
Trustee and P’10, ’12, and ’14
Both of my parents were educators and during my summer
holidays I volunteered to teach and enjoyed it immensely. Despite Thomas Lengel: Trustee and Head of
this, a career in education did not occur to me, and I entered School – Holy Child School at Rosemont
university as a pre-med student. Discovering philosophy, I then Bernadette M. Sparling:
thought I would go into law. It took an interviewer pointing out to President – Board of Trustees
me that from the way I was answering her questions, it was evident I and P’22 and ’24
loved children and my true calling was to be an educator. Upon
graduation from university, I took a job as a mathematics teacher
and judo coach and 30-plus years later, here I am.Bernadette M. Sparling, President
