| 23Park and Boulevard Tree Removals
In order to maintain the health and wellness of the overall urban tree canopy, the City of New
Brighton removes trees that are in parks and boulevards that are damaged, in poor health,
poor form, causing a hazard, or are of on overly large size. In particular, the City has been
slowly reducing the population of ash trees throughout the City, replacing them with a wide
variety of trees to combat Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). In 2021, the Minnesota Department of
Natural Resources (MnDNR) awarded the City $100,000 to help speed up the removal and
replacement of ash trees.
In order to meet the requirements of the grant, the City will be removing approximately 150
trees per year. Which means that you will be seeing a lot more of our Parks Forestry crews
and private contractors in the parks and along the boulevards doing tree removal. Keep in
mind, that we will be replanting one tree for every tree removed!
If you do have an ash tree on the boulevard and want to keep it from being removed the ash
tree will need to be treated by a certified pesticide applicator and tagged with applicator’s
name and year of treatment. The City is no longer treating boulevard ash trees. If you
want information on the treatment of EAB contact Forester Jim Veiman at jim.veiman@
