A Golden Opportunity
With amfAR’s TREAT Asia program improving HIV
treatment and care throughout the Asia-Pacific region
for the past 16 years, Hong Kong is a natural venue for
the Foundation’s newest international fundraising gala.
In its first three years, the amfAR Gala Hong Kong has
established itself as one of the city’s premier charity
events and has raised more than $11.5 million.

Memorable Moments

   Jackie Chan surprised guests at the 2017 event
    and auctioned an opportunity for one lucky guest
    to appear in his upcoming film with Sylvester
    Stallone and to attend the movie’s premiere in
    Beijing. This once-in-a-lifetime role sold for the
    highest amount of the evening, $300,000.

   Event Chair Pansy Ho, a driving force behind the        Charlize Theron
    success of amfAR Gala Hong Kong, summoned
    all of the Event Co-Chairs in attendance at the
    2016 event to the stage for a spectacular group
    photograph.

   Uma Thurman presented UN Goodwill
    Ambassador Victoria Beckham with amfAR’s
    Award of Courage at the second annual gala in
    March 2016.

   Academy Award-winning actor Adrien Brody was
    in attendance at the 2016 event and donated one
    of his original artworks, which sold for $100,000
    in the live auction.

   Robin Thicke rounded out the 2015 event,
    getting the audience on their feet with his chart-
    topping hits “Blurred Lines,” “Give It To You,” and
    “Magic,” and a rendition of Michael Jackson’s
    “Rock With You.”

amfAR events are some of the most eagerly anticipated and widely
publicized charity fundraisers each year, earning extensive press
coverage that reaches around the globe. For example, virtually all
major broadcast and print media outlets, as well as international
wire services, covered the amfAR Gala Hong Kong. The media
impressions for the 2017 event reached over four billion people.

The Foundation’s events are regularly featured in the pages of

amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, is dedicated to ending
the global AIDS epidemic through innovative research. Since its
founding in 1985, amfAR has accelerated the pace of HIV/AIDS
research and contributed to numerous breakthroughs that are

Through its Research program, amfAR is advancing efforts to prevent HIV infection in those who are vulnerable and to improve
treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS, with the ultimate goal of eradicating the virus. Launched in 2014, amfAR’s Countdown
to a Cure for AIDS initiative is aimed at developing the scientific basis of a cure by 2020.

amfAR’s TREAT Asia program is a network of clinics, hospitals, and research institutions working with civil society to ensure the
safe and effective delivery of HIV/AIDS treatments throughout Asia and the Pacific. TREAT Asia has become a model for regional
collaboration on treatment preparedness, education, training, and clinical research.

Informed by thorough research and analysis, amfAR is a highly respected advocate of rational and compassionate AIDS-related
public policy. The Foundation’s Public Policy program is engaged in efforts to increase investments in HIV/AIDS research;
ensure a robust response to the global epidemic; expand access to prevention, treatment, and care; and protect the civil rights of
all people affected by HIV/AIDS.

Through its Public Information program, amfAR generates awareness of the need for better treatment and prevention methods,
and publishes educational materials on important AIDS-related research, treatment, prevention, and policy issues. As a
