I have been especially impressed by the way in which S&TC uses its campaigning skills to directly challenge governments and their agencies over issues affecting wild salmonid fish stocks and the rivers in which they live. We hear a great deal about the drop in marine survival, but our scientists are increasingly discovering that many of the losses are occurring before the juvenile salmon even enter the sea, and that is why S&TC’s freshwater quality and habitat work is so important in providing the evidence to show decision-makers exactly what the ecological problems are, and what needs to be done to address them.

The Bowside Partnership17S. A two night fishing break for two at the
Arundell Arms Hotel
The winning bidder will have 20 miles of private fishing spread over seven
rivers at what is arguably the most famous fishing hotel in England. The
lot includes two nights for two people in either a double or a twin room,
with breakfast plus fishing for two rods for two days on any of the hotel’s
20 private beats. There are two resident fishing instructors on hand to
guide and help you find the best spots.
The Arundell Arms Hotel has been one of England’s premier fishing
hotels for more than half a century, with the previously mentioned 20
miles of its own water on the Tamar and six of its tributaries. These are
spate rivers that rise on the moors and flow through woods, farmland,
becoming larger, deepening, providing an almost infinite variety of water,
with long slow pools, gravelly runs and stickles, fast shallows and open
glides. Here you are alone all day, fishing a mile of river for wild brown
trout - shy fish that rise savagely to the fly. In the late spring the first
salmon arrive and by mid-summer, shoals of sea trout bring out the night
fishers.
You have three dining options during your stay. You may eat in the
award-winning restaurant, with its chandeliers and high ceilings; the
hotel bar for more relaxed bistro style dining; or try the adjacent village
pub which, in a former life, was the village police station. All three serve
great tasting, freshly cooked food, sourced from local suppliers.

to availability) and
includes room,

Donated by: Sir Edward Dashwood, Bt.24S. Three days for three rods salmon or seatrout fishing on
the River Earn on the Tay system in October 2020
Big runs of fresh fish enter the Tay and the River Earn in the late summer
and autumn. Most fish are grilse of around 6-10lbs or salmon of between
15-20lbs, with the prospect of fish up to 30lbs. Unlike the spring
and summer runs, these fish are not going to spawn in the highland
tributaries but accumulate in the main stem of the Tay and its lower
tributaries like the Earn, offering excellent fishing opportunities. The
biggest catches of the season are often taken at this time. More and
more chrome-bright fresh-run fish have been caught in recent years right
up to the end of the season and, indeed, continue running after it.
Accommodation is not included in this lot, but the donor can advise good
accommodation locally.
To be taken on Monday 12th, Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th October
2020. Please do not bid for this lot if you cannot make these specific
dates.

Donated by: Dr. Simon Wright, Macintyre & Thomson25S. Three days for four rods salmon and sea trout fishing
on Lower Dess Estate stretch of the River Dee
To be taken in September or October, 2020. The fishing at Lower Dess is
on an exceptionally attractive, secluded left bank stretch of the river Dee
which can be fished at low, medium and high water.
The beat is two and a quarter miles long and includes 16 named pools
many of which are against a woodland backdrop. The river bank is well
maintained and there are a number of gabions and croys which have
been carefully sited to improve the fishing. The beat is fishable at all
heights and most of the pools can be covered without wading. When you
fish at Lower Dess, you are in the capable hands of an experienced and
knowledgeable ghillie. He is on hand to consult and advise throughout
your stay.
Accommodation is available in either the Lodge or the Cottage on the
Estate, but not included in this lot. www.lowerdessestate.com
Guide price: £1200.00
Donated by: The Clayton family26S. Two rods for two days on the Ithon Fishery, River Usk
A mixture of single and double bank salmon and trout fishing on the River
Usk at Glangrwyney between Abergavenny and Crickhowell.
The offer is for two rods for two days at any time in the 2020 season
but excluding October 1st to 17th and June 1st and 2nd. As the fishing is
highly rain dependent, the successful bidder might wish to choose their
two days at short notice.
Historically the beat produced about 50 salmon a year, but in recent
years this has declined and we have become accustomed to 20 to 30 a
year. We ask for catch and release. The trout fishing is for wild fish. Some
parts are for wet fly but there are also deeper, slower parts for dry fly.
The syndicate does not fish for trout so potential is unknown.
There is a ghillie and he will meet bidders and show the water and give
advice. Should bidders wish him to fish with you then this would be by
arrangement separately.
We can suggest hotel or B&B accommodation if requested.

Hotel & Spa
The 11,000 acre lake has just 10 boats, providing an exclusive and
tranquil opportunity to fish in this beautiful part of North Wales. The lake
is still regarded as one of the finest still water fisheries in north Wales, if
not the UK. The fishing is predominantly loch-style, the finest sport often
coming from casting flies into the margins to sparkling free rising wild
trout. Supplementary stocking of rainbow trout gives the opportunity of
catching fish up to 5lbs.
The lot includes accommodation in a premier lake view double/twin
bedroom with full Welsh breakfast each morning and dinner both
evenings; dine in the award-winning Tower Restaurant on one evening
and the equally spectacular Tavern Brasserie on the other.
Fly fishing Lake Vyrnwy is a fantastic day out for beginners and experts
alike. Ghillies can be arranged (at the rod’s own cost) to help make the
most of your Lake Vyrnwy experience. A non-fishing partner may wish
to take advantage of complimentary entry to the spa and thermal suite
during the stay.
The lot is to be taken by mutual arrangement with the Donor between
mid-March and mid-October 2020.

Three rods for three days at Borrowston on the River Dee in May/ June
2020. Borrowston Beat is superb fly-fishing water which fishes well in a
wide range of heights.
The Gannets, with its bank of tall trees behind, is sheltered from
cold easterly winds. Going downstream the Ringstone, fished from
midstream, is an easy wade over shingle. Robb’s Hole and Broken Tree
are only fishable in high water. Then comes the glorious Greenbanks. The
attractive hut overlooks the Bend, Sands, Mid Hole and the Slips. Easily
waded, this is the most flattering water to fish. Further downstream
the fast flowing Flats fish increasingly well as the water level drops.
The small fall above Potarch Bridge leads into the deep Bridge Pool, a
good spring holding pool. Then the Little Floating Bank, Burn of Angels,
Floating Bank and Upper and Lower Inchbare complete this extraordinary
quality fishing.
CATCHES OVER 30LBS. The Borrowston beat has records going back
almost 100 years showing numerous fish caught in the range 30 to 38lbs.
Exact dates to be arranged with the donor as soon after auction as
possible. Ghillie available. Accommodation not included but local
accommodation is available to rent if needed.

sculpture by Sam MacDonald
This piece is layered resin with a patinated metal background and
measures 60cm x 60cm (approx. 24” x 24”). It depicts four salmon jostling
for position in the frame, two of which you just catch a glimpse of part of
their tails (an all too familiar sight to many anglers). Sam says. “I like how
fish cause a disturbance to the resident fish in pools often culminating in
a timely strike on an offered fly.”
He explains: The salmon represents nature and free spirit in the
wilderness and the fact that this icon is now threatened epitomises the
dire situation that we as humans now find ourselves in due to greed and
belligerence.
From the audacious precocious parr to the noble old spent kelt, the
salmon in all its stages has been a source of fascination and intrigue to
me. A trout makes sense and is logical. Cast the right fly, imitating the
correct insect at the correct depth, and the trout will try to feed on it. A
salmon however has no such logic. It seems to have no rhyme or reason
as to why it chooses to attack, play with, or pluck at a gaudy imitation
of nothing in particular when it doesn’t need to feed. When you catch
a salmon it’s more like the salmon has allowed you to do so and has
given you a gift, so you have to treat this creature with the reverence
it deserves. There is a sense that this fish still holds on to mysteries
and we constantly learn from it. It teaches us many of life’s emotions,
frustration, joy, intrigue, satisfaction, respect and most importantly
patience and to expect the unexpected. Even in folklore the salmon
dictates decisions. When it was proposed that Somerled become Lord of
the Isles he agreed only on the condition that he first catch the fish he
was after at that moment. Growing up beside a small salmon river it was
one quarry prized above all others.
“As an artist/sculptor the salmon is the quintessential ‘form following
function’. Superbly aerodynamic and incredibly powerful, a thing of real
beauty. It can power upstream and leap through a torrent of fast flowing
water to continue undaunted up to its spawning ground. This leap is such
a show of force and grit over adversity that it fascinates all and always
causes an involuntary gasp when first seen by the viewer. The exciting
palette of colours during its life vary from fleeting silver to steely blues
and then the rich coppery Autumnal tones as it changes into its coat of
many colours. The challenge of every artist who tackles the ‘good fish’ is
to grasp, touch, or hold that transient awe that this fish demands.”
Sam lives in Aberlady East Lothian, grew up on the Isle of Lewis and,
after 4 years at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts , lived on Orkney
for 20 years. This enabled his love of fishing, diving and the sea tocombine with his developing skills in metalwork. Sam uses traditional metal work techniques to produce contemporary and unique impressions of fish Travelling internationally to fly fish has opened up new inspiration for Sam. Fishing in Venezuela, the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic and recently Mexico for bonefish, permit, tarpon and barracuda have been the source of inspiration as has salmon and trout fishing in Iceland and Pakistan. Sam has installed a large salmon piece in the prestigious West Ranga Lodge in Iceland. In 2012 Sam had a large solo show in The Gallery, Cork Street, London and has also shown at various group exhibitions in galleries including The House of Bruar, CLA Game Fairs, the Royal Scottish Academy, The Wykeham Gallery and Visions West Gallery, Montana. He is a member and exhibits regularly with the Redspot Artist group (https://www.redspotartists.com/the-artists). Guide price: £2500.00 Donated by: Sam MacDonald Esq.

bronze sculpture by Ian Greensitt
A bronze salmon so lifelike it looks as if it is about to swim off its stand
created by leading wildlife sculptor Ian Greensitt. No. 1 of 25, measuring
10” long x 6” high (25cm x 15cm), this bronze is nothing less than a
collector’s item par excellence.
Born in 1971, Ian Greensitt grew up in Tynedale and went to school in
Newcastle. He had his first sculpture commission at the age of 9, when
the headmaster of his prep school asked him to sculpt a brown trout for
his study. Subsequently, Ian studied abstract sculpture at Northumbria
University, graduating with a BA (Hons) in Sculpture in 2001. Since then
he has pursued his twin passions of fishing and wildlife art. In casting
his bronzes, he uses the “lost wax” process. In this form of casting, no
two bronzes are exactly the same, with each piece having its own unique
patina colouration. Ian’s passionate commitment to the conservation
of wildlife remains as strong as his dedication to his art and S&TC is
delighted to offer this outstanding example of his work at this important
fund-raising event.

be reached within an hour’s drive from Reykjavik. Besides being a first-
class salmon river, it also has a very substantial run of good sized sea
trout, some straying into the 8 to 10lbs class and it goes without saying
that the sea trout add another exciting angle to this wonderful river.
The Laxa I Kjos has a fantastic lodge situated on the edge of the river
and looking downriver to the legendary Laxfoss. It is one of the finest
