RISING STAR PROJECT 2021/2022
APPLICATION
Since 2011, Rising Star Project has offered
professional mentorship for students interested
in theater-related careers. This year, for the first
time since its inception, the 2022 Rising Star
Project will include a focus on theatrical design.

In the coming year, a passionate team of local
teens will be assembled to envision, create, and
perform a festival of short-form musicals—also
written by local teens. And—for the first time—
using original sets, costumes, and other design
elements created as part of the process.

This page includes descriptions of participant
roles, a calendar of key dates and events,
and general information about the program.
All prospective participants must submit an
application and plan to interview (or audition)
for a specific team.

“I think it has been amazing—seeing the final presentation
and seeing these stories and feeling something I have never
quite felt before: that a group like this could be given the
power to tell our stories. This permission that I have been
given feels like it is going to last me for the rest of my life. I
am allowed to tell whatever stories I want and write music
with whatever sounds I want and musical theater can be
whatever I want it to be.”

5 experiences for students—both at The 5th and in residence throughout the
community and in areas where opportunities for arts education are limited.
                                                                                        The 5th Avenue Theatre
TEAMS AND ROLES
Rising Star Project 2022 focuses on career exploration and the development of original
musicals through a professional workshop and rehearsal process. Professional mentors
work with students to learn skills and execute tasks which immerse students in the
process of mounting a production at The 5th Avenue Theatre. Students have the
opportunity to apply for roles in the following areas:

THEATER DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
Behind the scenes, professional musicals require the vision and creativity of
designers and technicians. This season, student designers will start from scratch—
working closely with peers in artistic leadership roles to bring to life original
musicals which have never before been staged or mounted.

THE HAIR & MAKEUP DESIGN TEAM
will learn essential skills and industry best practices for designing hair, wigs, and
makeup. In addition, Hair & Makeup students will put wigs and makeup on actors
and perform changes during performances.

THE COSTUME DESIGN TEAM
will learn the fundamentals of designing costumes for theater. Additionally, they
will learn how to fit costumes on actors, alter pieces and “rig” them for quick
changes. Students will also iron and prep costumes for the show, assist with
quick changes, and “run” the wardrobe aspects of the show backstage during
performances.

                                                                                           The Rising Star Project
THE SCENIC DESIGN TEAM
will learn the fundamentals of designing sets and set elements for theater. Students
will work with a professional mentor to oversee the creation of set elements while
working within the parameters of the production budget and available materials.
After sets are created, scenic design teams will take on roles as deck carpenters
during the run of the show—responsible for operating and maintaining set
elements.

THE PROPS DESIGN TEAM
will learn the fundamentals of designing props and set elements for theater.
Students will work with a professional mentor to oversee the creation of props while
                                                                                         The 5th Avenue Theatre

working within the parameters of the production budget and available materials.
After props are created, the team will take on roles as prop masters during the run
of the show—responsible for tracking, prepping, and maintaining props.

THE SOUND DESIGN TEAM
will learn the fundamentals of designing sound and sound cues for theater. During
performances, the sound team will handle microphones and the live mixing audio at
a master sound board.
PERFORMANCE
 REHEARSAL MUSICIANS & ACCOMPANISTS

are present during workshops, rehearsals, and help to create recorded
tracks that are used in the final presentations. Ideal candidates are
interested in professional music careers, have experience playing in
advanced ensembles, and have an interest in learning about the diversity
of musical styles. Students who are interested in learning about the role of
a rehearsal pianist are strongly encouraged to apply.

Musicians should submit a complete application including a music resume.
Strong candidates will be invited to also submit a video audition or audition
 through a video conference.

This year’s project will need musicians who play the following instruments:
 piano, bass, drum set, guitar.

 THE CAST

Actors who are cast in a “new works” process take on a distinctive
role. They are responsible for bringing the writers’ work to life—but in
a way that allows the text to communicate as clearly as possible. “New
Works” actors need to adjust quickly, embrace changes, and be willing
to try multiple approaches with constant enthusiasm. General auditions
for student performers will take place online December 10-19, 2021 or
through submitted audition videos. Strong candidates will demonstrate
commitment to the project schedule and a passion for collaboration.

                                                                                      The Rising Star Project
