DRUM CIRCLE
The Arden Drum Circle has been hosting 'pandemic, socially
distanced' Drum Circles outdoors when the weather has
been good. We drum on 3rd Sundays (March 21) at 1 pm in
the Shady Grove behind the Gild Hall if there is no rain and
the temperature is above 50 degrees with little or no
wind. There is a possibility that we might be able to drum
indoors at the Hall if the weather is bad.

Keep an eye open for my emails and postings on
Facebook’s Arden Drum Circle page about whether the
weather cooperates with us or if we are able to play
indoors. If you are not on my eMail list, and would like to be, contact me
   at ardendrumcircle@yahoo.com.

Please wear a mask and observe the proper distances, bring your own seating and drums or

GARDENERS GILD
In March we will present a program featuring Paul Orpello, who is Head
Gardener at Hagley, the first great garden made by the Du Pont family,
who went on to make Longwood, Nemours, and other notable gardens
in our area. Orpello began the process of rebuilding the long-
abandoned gardens at Hagley when they were smothered in weeds and
invasives. He then led his workers to uncover their beauty and reveal
its secrets, including thousands of bulbs. And a moving story. March
   15, 7:30pm.

Book of Two Ways: by Jodi Picoult, the author of Small Great Things and A Spark of Light comes
a "powerful" (The Washington Post) novel about the choices that alter the course of our lives.

The Duke and I by Julia Quinn: Simon Basset, the irresistible Duke of Hastings, has hatched a plan
to keep himself free from the town's marriage-minded society mothers.

The Liar’s Dictionary by Eley Williams: Peter Winceworth, Victorian lexicographer, is toiling away
at the letter S for Swansby's multivolume Encyclopaedic Dictionary. His disaffection compels him to
insert unauthorized fictitious entries into the dictionary in an attempt to assert some sense of
   individual purpose and artistic freedom.

The Moor’s Account by Laila Lalami: The imagined memoirs of the first black explorer of America--
a Moroccan slave whose testimony was left out of the official record of the 1527 conquistador Panfilo
de Narvaez's expedition to claim the Gulf coast of North America for the Spanish crown and which
was faced with peril, navigational errors, disease, and starvation, as well as resistance from
   indigenous tribes.

Land : How the Hunger for Ownership Shaped the Modern World
                             Booklist (December 1, 2020 (Vol. 117, No. 7))
Nonfiction star Winchester (The Perfectionists, 2018) tackles an enormous
topic, writing about nothing less than all of the land in the world. Starting
with his own purchase of some acreage in Connecticut about 20 years
ago, he takes readers on a dizzying journey into land ownership, theft,
mapping, exploration, conflict, pollution, overdevelopment, and, in the
final pages, the increasing land loss now underway due to rising sea
levels. Winchester sweeps through history, name drops with abandon,
and does his best to make writing about it all look effortless. The problem
is not of the size of the subject but his insistence on addressing so much
of it. Readers learn of the problematic results of the artificial India-
Pakistan border, the 1889 Oklahoma Land Run, the incarceration of
Japanese Americans, battles in Belfast, threats from Russia, radioactive
contamination in Colorado, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and on and on.
Expect elegant sentences, intriguing profiles (although sorely lacking in women), and a genial
narrator who wanders wherever his curiosity takes him. Be prepared for a very wide-ranging ride.

Hamnet : a novel of the plague
   Booklist starred (May 15, 2020 (Vol. 116, No. 18))
“How were they to know that Hamnet was the pin holding them
together?” One ordinary afternoon in 1596, 11-year-old Hamnet’s
twin sister, Judith, is suddenly taken ill as the Black Death stalks
Stratford’s lanes. Hamnet’s father is, as always, away in London. His
mother, skilled with herbs and possessing a numinous second sight,
recognizes she will lose one of her children. Yet even she is shocked
when it is not Judith who dies, but Hamnet. Historical sources on
Agnes (aka Anne) Hathaway Shakespeare are few, so O’Farrell’s
imagination freely ranges in this tale of deepest love and loss.
Flashbacks document the Shakespeares’ marriage; O’Farrell offering a
gentler rendering than the traditional view. While Hamnet’s death
inspires aspects of Hamlet, Shakespeare is not the foremost player
   here (“He is all head, that one. All head, with not much sense.”);
rather, it is Agnes, vibrant, uncannily perceptive, who takes center
stage. While O’Farrell encapsulates atmosphere through small sensory
details—golden honey dripping from a comb, the smell of lavender sprinkled into a vat of soap—she
is laser-focused on human connections, their ebb and flow, and how they can drown a person. This
striking, painfully lovely novel captures the very nature of grief.

   SWIM GILD
The Arden Swim Club is ramping up towards summer! The Swim Team is gearing up
for the car wash in May, and we have a desperate need for towels. While doing your

SCHOLARS GILD
“Delaware’s Wild Side: The Bayshore Initiative”

Speaker: Anthony Gonzon, DNREC Coordinator Bayshore Initiative

Scholars Evening March 16, 7:30 PM, via Zoom

When we think of Delaware’s shoreline, we usually think of Lewes, Rehoboth, and Bethany
beaches. But, are you aware that the bulk of Delaware’s shore is on the Delaware Bay-- that slice
of coastline stretching from the canal to Cape Henlopen? The Bayshore is rich in natural beauty,
environmental significance and is a unique part of Delaware’s cultural heritage. A major initiative
has been on-going to preserve and improve it for us all.
Our speaker, Anthony Gonzon, the coordinator of the Bayshore Initiative for the Delaware
Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), will fill us in on the details of
what the state with its local partners have been doing to conserve, restore, and promote the lands
and waters of the Delaware Bayshore. Land has been purchased for preservation, wetlands
restored, wildlife observation platforms have been built, and access improved for the public. The
Bayshore Initiative partners have also worked with the small towns along the Bayshore to preserve
   and promote coastal communities.
Come find out more about what our state is doing to enhance both the natural and cultural heritage
of the Bayshore and explore Delaware’s ‘Wild Side’.
   Speaker Biography
Anthony Gonzon is a planner in DNREC’s Division of Fish and Wildlife and Coordinator of the
Delaware Bayshore Initiative. He has been president of the Delaware Ornithological Society and is a
   well-known naturalist throughout the state.
The Scholars Gild meets the third Tuesday of the month, September through June. This season, we

Club at our live evenings, we would like to encourage all to continue this tradition by making a
donation on at http://ardenclub.org/donate/. Your support helps keep the virtual and in-person
lights on at the Club and makes possible dynamic programming like concerts, theater, dance, and of
   course, our Scholars Gild evenings.

Follow the “Arden Scholars’ Gild” on Facebook to get all the updates. If you would like to receive
