About Preeclampsia
Preeclampsia is an extremely common condition of pregnancy caused by high blood pressure
in mothers, and is the major cause of premature birth and death of babies in the world today.
Worldwide more than two million women and their babies are affected by preeclampsia
    every year.
    This devastating disease sees:-
    • More than seven hundred babies die from preeclampsia every day – that equates to one
       jumbo jet full of babies.
    • Many babies born prematurely or severely prematurely are left with life time issues such
as cerebral palsy, deafness and blindness.
    • Many mothers suffer from short term health effects including stroke, kidney failure and
liver rupture (60,000 die every year).
    • Many mothers suffer from long term health effects including stroke and long term brain
       damage.
Preeclampsia has baffled scientists and doctors for over a hundred years and is the primary
focus for a group of Australian scientists lead by Professor Annemarie Hennessy in Sydney.
Professor Hennessy’s team have been supported by PEARLS (Preeclampsia Research
Laboratories) for a period of eleven years.

We would like to acknowledge and thank our patron

Q&A with Amanda Davidson,
Chair of Pearls Preeclampsia Research Laboratories
1. What inspired you to start the charity ‘Pearls Preeclampsia Research
   Laboratories’?
I had preeclampsia when I was pregnant with my son Harry, and after he
was born I had a discussion with my doctors about the condition. It was
only then that I realised how widespread and devastating preeclampsia
is. I just saw that something needed to be done, so I set about doing
it. The inspiration really came from my brilliant doctors, Annemarie
   Hennessy and Geoff Brieger.
2. From your own personal experience, what advice would you give
   women regarding pregnancy?
Make sure that you go for your regular check ups and get your blood
pressure checked. It could be high without you even knowing it as
there are often no symptoms. For example I had never had high blood
pressure in the past and I have had normal blood pressure since. Then
listen to your doctors and do what they say. I can remember clearly
the day that I was diagnosed with preeclampsia. I was a partner with
a major law firm with a very busy practice and at week 30 I was told to
immediately go home to bed and rest. I was in the middle of a huge
mining case and it was very hard to let go of that and focus on me and
the baby. Luckily I had and still have amazing clients that supported me
through that time. Just do what your doctors say. Not everything in life
   is within your control.
3. If you could had one wish for Pearls, what would that be?
My wish is that we can learn how to prevent preeclampsia. If we could
do that, we would save literally millions of lives. The figures are alarming
with 1 in 10 pregnancies in Australia affected, and even higher in other
countries who do not have the level of obstetric care that we enjoy
here in Australia. The effects of preeclampsia are devastating both
for mothers and babies and are often not discussed. My second wish
would be that women come out and talk about their experience with
preeclampsia. With more awareness we can raise more money for our
   critical medical research.
4. Professor Annemarie Hennessy is an incredibly inspiring woman.
All the time and research she devotes to Pearls and the Heart
Research institute is ground breaking. If you had one word to
describe Professor Annemarie Hennessy, what would that be?
Brilliant. Annemarie is the most capable, intelligent and compassionate
person I have ever known. It is wonderful to be able to work with her as
well as her incredible team. Finding the cause of preeclampsia was her
life’s work, and finding a way of converting her teams’ ground breaking
research into a practical way of preventing preeclampsia from occurring
in the future will remain her life’s work. I’ll be there along the way to
help in whatever way I can. Annemarie literally saved my life and that of
my gorgeous son Harry. It’s the least I can do.

                                                                                   3

In early 2012 Charmaine was invited to exhibit in the Sydney Morning Herald’s Australia Day show at The Tim Olsen Gallery.
Charmaine was selected as a finalist in The Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing in 2010 and The Norvill Prize 2012 and has been
chosen as the recipient of The Enid Ng Artists Residency in Paris 2013. In 2011 she travelled to The Larapinta Trail in Central
Australia with a group of artists to paint the magnificent landscape of the West McDonald Ranges. An exhibition of their
works was shown at The Moree Plains Regional Gallery and then at The Shoalhaven City Arts Centre. Charmaine was invited
by the Director of Tamworth Regional Gallery to have a solo exhibition in their new gallery in July 2012 which was a great
success. Curator and critic Andrew Frost invited Charmaine to participate in a group exhibition at Tamworth Regional Gallery
in September this year and Angus Nivison has nominated Charmaine to exhibit with him next year as part of a larger touring
exhibition called Mentor/Mentee.

Set of 3 gorgeous sketches by Alex Perry

Undoubtedly Australia’s premier couturier, Alex Perry has added a new level of glamour to the Australian
fashion industry with his breathtaking gowns. The designer ‘du jour’ for celebrity red carpet dressing and
high society weddings, Alex Perry is in a league of his own.
Alex graduated from the prestigious East Sydney Fashion Design Studio. From the very early stages his
brand carried a unique trademark signature –beautiful, luxury fabrics combined with dazzling cuts.
Launching his eponymous label in the early 1990’s, Alex’s gowns were instantly acclaimed by leading
Australian magazines. Vogue Australia was the first to feature his jewelled corsets and glamorous sheaths
     in their main fashion shoots.
It wasn’t long before the personality behind the scenes began to shine almost as brightly as the gowns and
Alex emerged as one of Australia’s first designer-celebrities.
With his often frank, but always humorous, insights into the workings of the local and international fashion
industry, Alex is a highly regarded and in-demand public speaker and MC. A proud Greek-Australian, Alex
has also spoken frankly on the subject of Growing up Greek at the National Art Gallery Canberra.
But it’s his fashion that really sets Alex apart from the rest. His perfectly constructed statement dresses,
often with intricate details, have led to an ever- increasing local and international client list.
Alex devotes much of his time and energies for charitable organizations such as AEIOU, The Sydney
Children’s Hospital, PEARLS, Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer, The Brain Foundation, The Royal Flying Doctors
     and the Red Cross.

                                                                                                      Value Priceless!

CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS FOR THE PEARLS NIGHT AND AUCTION TO BE HELD ON
WEDNESDAY, 30 OCTOBER 2013 AT THE MINT

The property offered in this sale and listed in this catalogue will be sold by The Heart Research Institute (PEARLS), registered with the Charity Commissioners
under number CMI10600016 Heart Research Institute. Any questions in relation to the auction should be directed to PEARLS. The following terms and
conditions govern the sale of all the property offered (as amended by any posted notices or oral announcements during the auction):

1. (a) PEARLS does not assume any risk, liability or responsibility for the authenticity or the authorship of any property identified in this
catalogue (that is, the identity of the creator or the period, culture, source or origin, as the case may be, with which the creation of any
                       property is identified herein).

           (b)	All property is sold with all faults and imperfections and errors of description and PEARLS does not make any representations or
warranties of any kind or nature, expressed or implied, with respect to the property and in no event shall either of them be responsible
for the correctness of any descriptions of property, nor be deemed to have made, any representations or warranties of physical condition,
size, quality, rarity, importance, genuineness, attribution, authenticity or provenance of the property. No statement in the auction
catalogue or other description made at the sale, in any sale invoice or elsewhere, shall be deemed such a representation or warranty.

           (c)	Prospective bidders should inspect the property before bidding to determine its condition, size and whether or not it has been repaired
                       or restored.

           (d) Property may be offered subject to reserves.

2. Any property may be withdrawn by PEARLS at any time before the actual sale.

3. The lots will be auctioned in the order as determined by the auctioneer at the auction.

4.	PEARLS reserves the right to reject a bid from any bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event
of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer shall have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to re-offer and resell
the lot in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, the sale records PEARLS shall be conclusive in all respects.

5.	If the auctioneer determines that any opening bid is not commensurate with the value of the property, he may reject the same and withdraw the
property from sale, and if, having acknowledged an opening bid, he decides that any advance thereafter is insufficient, he may reject the advance.

6.	On the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, the highest bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the offered lot subject to all of the conditions set
forth herein and thereupon (a) assumes the risk and responsibility thereof, (b) will sign a confirmation of purchase thereof and (c) will pay the full
purchase price or such part as PEARLS may require. PEARLS will not release a lot to a successful buyer until payment of the total amount due has
been made. After payment, the purchaser shall remove the Property from the location of the auction. If the property is not so removed, it may be
sent by PEARLS at its discretion to storage for the account, risk and expense of the purchaser and such charges will then be added to the purchase
           price of the property.

If the foregoing conditions and other applicable conditions are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to PEARLS by law
including, without limitation, the right to hold the purchaser liable for the bid price, PEARLS at its option, may either (a) cancel the sale, retaining as
liquidated damages all payments made by the purchaser or (b) resell the property on three days notice to the purchaser and for the account and risk
of the purchaser, either publicly or privately, and in such event the purchaser shall be liable for payment of any shortfall between the original sale
price and the price achieved upon resale, all other charges due hereunder and any incidental damages.

7. Payments for purchases must be made in $AUD and in the following forms; cash, cheque (backed by cheque guarantee card) and all major credit
           cards.

8.	In the case of commission bids or bids transmitted by telephone, PEARLS is not responsible for errors or omissions arising out of or resulting from
           mechanical difficulties or failure.

9. In no circumstances will PEARLS rescind any purchase made or refund the amount paid in respect of any lot.

10. Neither shipping nor delivery costs are included in the price at which a lot is knocked down by the auctioneer to the buyer.

11.	These Conditions of Sale, and rights and obligations hereunder, shall be governed by and construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of
New South Wales. By bidding at an auction, whether present in person or by agent, commission bid, telephone or other means, the purchaser shall
be deemed to have consented to the exclusive jurisdiction of Courts of New South Wales.

                                                                                                                                                                         35
