COVID-19 RESPONSE
                                                                      COVID-19 STATEMENT
                                                                                           Notice to Attendees

On February 22, President Neil McCaffery and IAMPETH board members visited the Marriott Hotel in Omaha,
Nebraska. They wanted to see what ‘attending a conference in these uncertain times’ would mean to the
organization and its members. Below is the COVID-19 response from the IAMPETH board at the time of this
visit:

       • Masks are required in all public areas, this includes all of the conference space.

       • Classroom seating will be two people per eight foot table, each tables will be 6 feet apart.

       • Hallway space in front of the classrooms will allow for six foot distancing as people line up in the
           morning.

       • The Archive Room, Artisan Vendor Room and Vendor Room will have maximum occupancy posted at
each door and if need be, will have monitors.

       • Coffee breaks will be staffed and served by the hotel so as to eliminate handling by multiple people.

       • Evening activities will have attendance guidelines and be monitored.

       • The opening reception and closing banquet will have seating spaced according to hotel guidelines.

       • Sharing of guest rooms is to be done at your own discretion. It is suggested that if you share your
room, do it with someone you know.

With the hopes of improvement as the year goes on, COVID-19 guidelines might relax. You will be required to
follow the current local guidelines and hotel policy at the time of the conference. Conference attendees will be
notified if any updates to these policies change.

                                                                                                                       2

Classes
When registering, you may select one of the four classes offered each day, based on your area of interest, your
skill level, and availability of seats in the class at the time. Students of all levels, from beginner to advanced, have
the opportunity to learn a broad variety of skills from world-class instructors in the course of the week. Our digital
projection systems provide larger-than-life views of the instructor’s hand with pen or brush.

Archive Collection
Thought by many to be the ‘soul’ of our organization, the Archive contains priceless and rare original specimens
from past masters. Spend time with our remarkable collection of art that includes original bird flourishes,
ornamental lettering, and resolutions dating back to the late 1800s. There are also several scrapbooks by the old
pen masters. Enjoy this wonderful study opportunity by taking advantage of all the Archive Room has to offer.
We encourage you to take photos for personal study, but these documents from the ‘Golden Age of Ornamental
Penmanship’ are extremely fragile so the use of flash photography is prohibited. The Archive Room will be open
to all members in the evenings.

Open Study Room
There will be an open study room in the evenings for attendees to work and share together. This is an opportunity
for everyone, from novice to advanced, to write, letter, and flourish together in an unstructured setting. The Open
Study Room will be located in the Dodge Room from 7:00-10:00PM.

Official Vendor
Paper & Ink Arts will be our vendor store for the week. They will have all the supplies you may need for your
classes. If you would like to place a pre-order for pick-up at the conference, you may order directly online at www.
paperinkarts.com or by telephone at +1 (615) 770-9902. Your pre-order must be placed prior to July 21st. The
conference supply list will be on their website for easy ordering.

members is available for bidding. All are encouraged to donate an item: original artwork, prints, pens, nibs or other
calligraphy-related treasures. Please bring your donations to the opening check-in, and participate at the auction

Business Meeting
Every IAMPETH member, attending the conference or not, may attend the yearly Business Meeting. This is the
time to see the ‘inner workings’ of our organization. A slate for the new Board will be presented for voting. We
encourage everyone to attend this short, informative meeting.

Group Photo
Each year we assemble for one large group photo. This year the group photo will be after the business meeting on
Thursday at 6:00PM. All attendees are encouraged to participate. An announcement will be made at the
conference on the specific location where the photo will be taken.

Closing Banquet
On Saturday evening we will close the annual IAMPETH conference with a sit-down dinner celebrating our week
together. Many enjoy dressing up for this event, but it is not required to do so. Tickets for conference-goers and
additional guests may be purchased at the time of online registration.

after an American Indian Tribe, Omaha means “Those going against the wind or current”, Omahans proudly
continue to live up to the name. Currently, the 42nd largest city in the United States, the metropolitan area is home

Bill Kemp is a lettering artist, but has been told by his mentor, Mr. William Lilly, that he is an
Engrosser. Bill has been practicing his craft for over 40 years (don’t wish to sound too old). Pointed
pen is his true love, but also does broad-edge lettering, too. Engrosser’s Script is a script that has
really been his main focus for many years. Bill has studied with instructors including the late Mr.
Dick Jackson, the late Ms. Gwen Weaver, Master Penman Mr. Mike Kecseg and his mentor Senior
Master Penman Mr. William Lilly over the course of his career. The main path of his studies has
been with Mr. Lilly for the past 18 years, and he completed his Certificate of Merit in Engrosser’s
Script with Mr. Lilly in November 2015. He served as the President of IAMPETH from 2012-

at Castle in the Air in Berkeley, California, 3 to 4 times a year for the past 18 years (except in 2020 where we all have learned
to use Zoom as a teaching vehicle and stay at home to teach). He also runs his small calligraphy business in Albuquerque, New
Mexico where his clients keep him busy and he gets paid to practice.

Engrosser’s Script - All skill levels
This class is for both beginners and students who wish to refresh themselves with the basics. Known as both Roundhand and/
or Engrossing Script, this will be a class to provide the basics and true fundaments of this beautiful script. Learning how to
manipulate the pointed pen to make the down strokes thick and hairline upward strokes is the focus of this grateful script.
Using the Zanerian Manual and the teachings of my mentor Senior Master Penman Mr. William Lilly, we will focus on the
material referenced in the manual and what I have learned from Mr. Lilly as we learn to write this script. The morning will focus
on the basic strokes for the lower case to learn those letters. The afternoon will shift to the capital letters and combining them
with the lower case letters for appropriate spacing.

Class supplies
I would suggest an oblique pen holder or some may wish to use a straight pen holder; suggest a Nikko G nib or Gillott 1068A
(experienced individuals can use their favorite nib); McCaffery’s ink (any color) or your favorite ink used with the pointed pen
(other suggested inks would be Palace Moon, Sumi, Walnut Ink or Old World Ink); since there will be a limited amount of
guide sheets in your handouts, an alternative paper would be the grid-square paper (5 squares per inch) pads from Rhodia or
Clairefontaine tablets (which is excellent paper for the pointed pen). All of the supplies here could be used in other classes.

                                                                                                                                          14

Fun with split nib – intermediate
A split nib is handled exactly as one would handle a broad-edged pen. The split nib, sometimes called a scroll pen, creates
outline alphabets. With the split nib, a letter becomes a contour drawing with only lines on the outside while the center has
nothing in it. Not yet, anyway. The fun part of an outline letter is what you can do around the letter and inside the letter. The
only limitation is your imagination. Fun, interesting alphabets are possible with the split nib as are a myriad of other ideas.
You will learn the cornering technique that can add some interesting flourishes to any letter. The alphabet below is just a small
sample of what we will cover.

the Scroll Parallel Pen, you will likely need four cartridges in your favorite color. PENCILS: We will only spend a few minutes

                                       ADVANCED ORNAMENTAL PENMANSHIP - Advanced
The goals of acquiring an advanced level of skill in Ornamental Penmanship include gaining a thorough knowledge of standard
and alternate letterforms for both Lowercase and Capitals, plus the magic ingredients of mastering the manipulation of
Curvature and Negative Space. Knowing these elements - Curvature and Negative Space, opens up endless possibilities for
the penmanship artist. The ability to spontaneously envision directional paths of curvature, plus being able to overlap, intersect,
parallel, and spiral curves, as well as determining balance in a composition, create degrees of contrast and add a sense of
emotion throughout a written text. These skills enable the artist to basically go anywhere on a sheet of paper and turn a
type-written text into a most expressive example of visual language. These are the hallmarks of superior ability in the realm
of Ornamental Penmanship. Our class will focus on the fundamental techniques to understand and manipulate Curvature,
both with letterforms and flourishing. I will explain and demonstrate how to achieve the spiraling of letters that I refer to
as “Super Twisters”, the methods to artistically flourish letterforms, and how to create the complex patterns for what I call
“Masterpiece Flourishing”. These are all related by the concepts of Curvature and Negative Space. I will also explain the
techniques of creating Spencerian Monograms; these, too, are related as mentioned above. There will be a class project. Please
                                       Note: this is an Advanced Level Class; participants must already posses a competent degree of skill in pointed pen lettering;
either Spencerian, Copperplate, or Engrosser’s Script.

THE ART OF MOVEMENT WRITING – ALL SKILL LEVELS
Traditionally, Spencerian Script & Ornamental Penmanship were written using rapid motions. This style of movement writing
was how they managed to create the unbelievably beautiful specimens we now study. In this class we will start from square
one and train our muscles to flow graciously from form to form driven by the larger muscles of our upper arm and back, rather
than using our fingers to draw out the letters. When combined with a rhythmic flow, this will give our writing a beautiful
and uniform appearance. From there we will go further and explore accent flourishes, designed with our movement in mind
to best add character and an artistic flare to our writing. Having an understanding of Spencerian or Ornamental Penmanship
will help greatly in this class. The learning curve is steep, but since we start from the basics, this class can be suitable for any
level (though challenging for beginners). Students will be taught to execute Spencerian & Ornamental Penmanship using new
muscles and movements. Topics will cover use of muscles, forearm and whole arm movement, rhythm, line integrity, oval
symmetry, and accent flourishing.

Engrosser’s Script is a beautiful flowing hand steeped in tradition. While very practical, there may be a time when you’ll want
to break with this traditional style and create letter forms that are more expressive and contemporary. In this class we’ll take
the same flexible pointed pen we’ve been using for Engrosser’s Script and use it to explore the potential for creating new and
exciting letter forms. Through step-by-step instruction we’ll start with an informal pen script and then move toward creating
a “gothicized” script and an “uncialized” script. Along the way we’ll develop confidence with the pointed pen and discover the
unique advantages of lettering with a flexible tool.

INTRODUCTION TO SPENCERIAN SCRIPT – Beginner
Spencerian Script, or Ornamental Penmanship, is the beautiful, flourished style of writing that was developed in the latter half
of the nineteenth century. Over a century later, it is still admired for its delicate and exquisitely graceful forms - the lyrical
lowercase and the dramatic and expressive capitals. This introductory course will begin with an explanation of the tools used,
the basic characteristics of the alphabet, and the finger and muscle movements needed to achieve the delicate hairlines. A study
of the fundamentals of shading, and the beautiful forms and flourishes of the capital letters will be included.

hand, it evolved into a unique style called Eccentric Title. The course will begin with history of this unique lettering, and will

the unique characteristics of early 1900s lettering, participants should expect to learn aspects of lettering that include pressure

French Ronde – Beginner
Vivian uses French Ronde for short poems and lines of emphasis on awards and certificates. The lettering style fits well for her
work with its heavy upright strokes that have a round look and connecting hair lines. It is an interesting style where the letters
are joined as in cursive. This hand has graceful curves and works well when stretched out or squished. Ronde script appeared
in France at the end of the 16th century. It was popularized in the 17th century by writing masters such as Louis Barbedor.
When the Parliament of Paris wanted to standardize writing of government documents, he was placed in charge of writing the
reference copy of the La Ronde. In its original form, it borrowed some of its letterforms from the round Gothic style. This style
of writing was still in use until the 20th century. It was used in French school manuals to teach the bases of cursive writing and
