HILMA AF KLINT Occult Painter and Abstract Pioneer This classic pioneering work by Åke Fant is now available in English translation for the first time since its original publication in 1989. Following her training at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and twenty years of painting, Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) began working with an abstract visual language in 1906. She then dedicated the rest of her life to an immense artistic commission. Like her contemporaries Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian, af Klint was inspired by the spiritual realm. She drew on occult sources of her day, such as Spiritualism and the writings of Madame Blavatsky, Annie Besant and Rudolf Steiner. This edition supplements Åke Fant’s original text and Lars Nittve’s foreword with a new preface by Kurt Almqvist and an updated timeline. Fant’s work remains vital even in the light of subsequent research, at a time when interest in Hilma af Klint and her work has never been greater. Åke Fant, (1943–1997) was a senior lecturer, art historian and sculptor. To this day he is considered to be the foremost connoisseur of Hilma af Klint’s oeuvre and the one who performed the first comprehensive review of her works. Translation: Ruth Urbom ISBN: 978-91-89069-47-3. 155 illustrations. 29 x 23 cm (portrait). 256 pp. Also available in Swedish. Specification: Clothbound with a debossed sticker and gold foil stamp, sewn. Published in February 2021.
HILMA AF KLINT Message and Mission Hilma af Klint’s works carry within them a message and a philosophy of life, and according to Erik af Klint (1901–81), who was the sole heir to af Klint’s oeuvre, and founder of The Hilma af Klint Foundation, ‘Everything should be done to bring this hidden message to light.’ The artist left behind 1600 works of different kinds, of which 124 are notebooks with a total of 26,000 pages. For the first time, all these diaries and notebooks have now been combed through in the quest for the answer to what message, mission and philosophy of life the work contains, and what, as Erik af Klint writes, ‘Hilma af Klint’s spiritual masters intended with them.’ Hilma af Klint called the notebooks ‘educational material’, and they are the key to understanding her paintings. The book, among other things, brings up ideas from Spiritualism, Theosophy and Anthroposophy, and also thoughts from Rosicrucianism, that af Klint called ‘mystery knowledge’, and which influenced her message, mission and philosophy of life. Kurt Almqvist, President of Axel and Margaret Ax:son Johnsons Foundation for Public Benefit, and board member of The Hilma af Klint Foundation. Translation: Ruth Urbom ISBN: 978-91-89069-96-1. Not all artists oeuvre can, will, or deserve to be collected in a CATALOGUE RAISONNÉ. But Hilma af Klint’s art not only deserves it – it demands it – since her oeuvre holds a message and reveals a philosophy. For the first time ever, the reader will be able to review the complete works of Hilma af Klint in this historical document divided into seven volumes. It is undeniably one of Sweden’s most fascinating collections of artistic output. The first three volumes was published in autumn 2020. The paintings are presented in the same order as the anthroposophist Olof Sundström placed them in 1945, on assignment from Erik af Klint (1901–1981). He was the sole heir of Hilma af Klint’s works as well as the sole donor to and founder of The Hilma af Klint Foundation in 1972. The works are printed in an exclusive edition designed by Patric Leo. The series is produced in cooperation with Axel and Margaret Ax:son Johnson Foundation, and features introductions by Daniel Birnbaum and Kurt Almqvist. The final volume includes a biographical essay on Hilma af Klint by the German author Julia Voss. A separate slipcase containing the seven volumes will be available in spring 2022. ‘Here we can all follow the chronological development and hopefully understand a bit more about af Klint’s elusive, esoteric image-world. It is a tool that facilitates research, and fundamentally establishes the artist’s work – all in all, a true deed for culture.’ Birgitta Rubin, Dagens Nyheter Kurt Almqvist, President of Axel and Daniel Birnbaum, Artistic Director of Margaret Ax:son Johnsons Foundation Acute Art, London, UK. MÄNNISKAN OCH HENNES SYMBOLER (‘Man and His Symbols’) Man and His Symbols (here in a new edition, translated by Karin Stolpe in 1966) came about in cooperation with C.G. Jung’s closest associates. The book, that is one of depth psychology’s popular-science classics, explains his theory of the meaning of symbols – especially dream symbols. The first chapter, ‘Approaching the Unconscious’, was written by Jung himself shortly before his death in June 1961. It constitutes a third of the book and presents an accessible and fascinating account of Jung’s view of the unconscious and its symbols. Jung’s associates Joseph L. Henderson, Marie-Louise von Franz, Aniela Jaffé and Jolande Jacobi, then develop his ideas in the chapters ‘Ancient Myth and Modern Man’, ‘The Process of Individuation’, ‘Symbolism in the Visual Arts’, and ‘Symbols in an Individual Analysis’. Over 500 illustrations provide a continuous commentary to Jung’s ideas. They show the nature of dreams and their function, penetrate the symbolism in art and interpret the psychological significance. Jung’s thoughts about what creates meaning for a person, and the insight into how symbols affect our emotional lives, are constantly relevant as an expression of humanity’s never-ending existential need for goals and meaning – and with that also wisdom. THE VANADIS EXPEDITION An Ethnographic Voyage Around the World 1883–1885 The Swedish steam frigate Vanadis circumnavigated the globe between 1883 and 1885. Onboard was the archaeologist and ethnographer Hjalmar Stolpe, accompanied by the young photographer Oscar Ekholm. Together they documented the peoples and societies from South America’s coasts to the islands of the Pacific. Oscar Ekholm became one of the first global travellers practising the nascent art of photography, but is almost completely forgotten today. For the first time, a selection of around 700 of Ekholm’s unique photographs from the expedition are showcased. With copious extracts from Hjalmar Stolpe’s letters and articles, this graphic depiction gives us access to life onboard the Vanadis. Despite the colonial imperialism and social divides of the time, the photos and texts also tell the story of human warmth, curiosity and humanism in the encounter between people of different continents. Bo G Erikson, holds an honorary doctorate at Uppsala University and is a well-known tv presenter and producer. He has devoted several years to the research of both Hjalmar Stolpe’s life and the Vanadis Expedition. Bengt Wanselius is a photographer and a picture editor. AXEL TÖRNEMAN 1880–1925 A Forgotten Pioneer Axel Törneman (1880–1925) was a pioneer in modern Swedish art history, mostly noted for his monumental frescos in the Stockholm City Hall and the Swedish parliament building. Intense and headstrong, he pursued his own path, consciously choosing not to belong to any contemporary artistic group. This is the first biography of Axel Törneman. It includes all his best- known works alongside a large number of easel paintings and drawings. With previously unpublished material such as photographs and drawings, the book paints the picture of an artist who constantly sought new motifs as well as techniques, and who despite a short and at times quite dramatic life was one of the most significant artists at the dawn of modernism in Sweden. Anita Theorell holds a PhD in Art History and is the author of several books on cultural history. She has done research on Axel Törneman since the 1960s. Bengt Wanselius is a photographer and picture editor who has received acclaim for several of his photography books. The Art and Craft of Garden Making has been published in many editions; the fifth edition from 1926 is considered the most beautiful. We are making this version available as a facsimile to give more people the opportunity to discover Mawson’s exquisite work. The book contains a new foreword written by author Clive Aslet. KNOWLEDGE AND INFORMATION The Potential and Peril of Human Intelligence We have come a long way from the religions, myths and foundation stories that created the bedrock of man’s early understanding of the world and everything in it, and our stock of knowledge has increased exponentially in recent times. In this volume leading scholars in the arts and sciences discuss how knowledge and information have been preserved and transferred throughout history, bringing us up to today’s digital age and the multiple challenges it presents, not least with regard to our personal data. Amid growing tension between a ‘cognitive elite’ and those who feel excluded from public discourse and decision making, alongside increasing friction in academia over freedom of interpretation and expression, will our information society turn out to be an era of enlightenment or are we entering a new dark age for knowledge? SVENSKARNA OCH DET HELIGA LANDET (‘Swedes and the Holy Land’) The relationship between the Swede and the Holy Land is unique in cultural history. Ever since the Bible started being read in Swedish about 500 years ago, the geography of the land and the legends of the scripture have been woven into our identity and our view on history. How did this come to be? In this anthology crusaders, pilgrims, merchants, scientists, and writers with a connection to the country, illuminate how this fascinating relationship developed, from the Viking Age until the present day. Among other things, we get to read about how Swedish people’s idea of themselves as Christians has been shaped over the centuries; how we came to change our religion; and what effect Holy Birgitta’s revelations in Bethlehem had on Swedish religiosity; as well as the effects of Fredrika Bremer’s and Selma Lagerlöf’s books about Jerusalem. Are contemporary Swedes really as secular as we generally assume? The essays in this richly illustrated volume come from the seminar ‘Swedes in the Holy Land’, which took place at the American Colony Hotel in Jerusalem in 2020. Editors are Kurt Almqvist, Louise Belfrage and Nathan Shachar. Contributing writers: Roger Andersson, Louise Belfrage, Karin Bosch Roxman, Carina Burman, David Dunér, Nils Ekedahl, Mia Gröndahl, Thord Heinonen Silverbark, Åsa Karlsson, Dan Korn, Arne Lapidus, Rachel Lev, Anna Nordlund, Axel Odelberg, Nathan Shachar, Jesper Svartvik, David Thurfjell, Kurt Villads Jensen, Håkan Wahlquist and Lars Wollin. FOLKTRO En besjälad värld (‘Folklore: A Spiritual World’) Ever since Max Weber’s famous thesis about Entzauberung der Welt – the disenchantment of the world – in light of the decline of religion associated with the Enlightenment and scientific progress, many scholars have considered the thesis of gradual general secularisation. The light of reason should indeed disenchant the world and enable people to increasingly control and understand it. However, faith in a meaningful spiritual world lives on, which for better or worse affects people’s lives in a meaningful way, still in step with scientific progress in many cultures. What similarities and differences are there in folklore across the world and what role has folklore played in the course of history? What distinguishes folklore – often condescendingly called superstition – from traditional religion, for example: Christian belief in the Virgin Birth, Jesus’s resurrection from the dead and in particular the crypto- cannibalistic Catholic belief that the bread and wine of Communion are in pure physical terms the body and blood of Christ? This richly illustrated anthology considers the question of people’s tendency to animate the world around them with spirits – from folklore and mythology to religion. Editors are Kurt Almqvist and Lotta Gröning. Contributing writers: Camilla Asplund Ingemark, Gabriella Beer, Karin Blomqvist and Jerker Blomqvist, Kristina Ekero Eriksson, Joel Halldorf, Tommy Kuusela, Lena Kättström Höök, Lars Lönnroth, Per-Johan Norelius, Britt-Mari Näsström, David Thurfjell, Tora Wall and Andreas Winkler. GUSTAV III Sin egen arkitekt / His Own Architect Gustav III (1746–1792) is one of Sweden’s best-known and most important kings, both in Sweden and internationally. He is especially renowned as the founder of several academies – perhaps most notably the Swedish Academy, the body that selects the Nobel Prize laureates in literature – but also for his importance to theatre and art. Despite his fame, Gustav III’s great importance as an architect has however remained unknown. Now published for the first time, this spectacular edition will feature a total of 571 drawings, many by the king’s hand, and in a 1:1 scale. It will be divided into three parts, gathered in a clamshell box, and printed in a limited edition. The book comes with a bespoke Gustavian table for display, and will be an exclusive collector’s item. GUSTAV III:S COLLECTION Architectural Drawings from 17th–19th Centuries Gustav III’s Collection including his own and other famous architects’ drawings, accompanied Gustav IV Adolf during his exile in 1809. The collection was returned to Sweden via a purchase in 1925 by the brothers Helge and Axel Ax:son Johnson and was inherited by Axel’s daughter Marie-Claire. It is today stored at Engelsberg’s Ironworks and is owned by the Marie-Claire Cronstedt Foundation. The drawings were made by Sweden’s leading architects during the 17th- and 18th centuries and include, among others, the castles and gardens at Drottningholm, Ekolsund, Haga, Gripsholm, Karlberg, Ulriksdal, Svartsjö, Stockholm and Uppsala. Even Gustav III’s own sketches are attributed. This book serves as a compendium to Gustav III – His Own Architect where the drawings are reproduced in 1:1 format over three volumes. KAKELUGNEN I SVERIGE (‘Tile Stoves in Sweden’) In 1767, the architect and superintendent Carl Johan Cronstedt presented a memorandum titled Beskrifning på Ny Inrättning af Kakelugnar til Weds Besparing för Rikets råd (‘Description of a New Apparatus for Saving Wood for the Privy Council’), in which he describes a revolutionary construction that would change Swedish architecture and domestic life over the next couple of hundred years: the modern tile stove. Until the early 20th century, the tile stove remained by far the most important source of heating in Swedish homes. Both the technology and aesthetics were refined, although the same basic principles for installing tiled ovens are still largely used today. Today, the tile stove is an important example of work with technology, science and craftsmanship during the Enlightenment, and following the development of the tile stove provides a window into the world of 18th century thinking. This book is part of the Swedish series Perspektiv från världsarvet Engelsbergs bruk (‘Perspectives from the Engelsberg Ironworks World Heritage Site’). JÄRNBRUKENS HISTORIA (‘The History of Swedish Ironworks’) The rumble of clanging hammers and roaring waterfalls is no longer heard today. But from their stillness, preserved industrial settings tell the story of how Bergslagen in central Sweden became a centre of global iron production. In heat and soot, the foundations were laid for the country’s position as a major power and for its economic prosperity. In the book Järnbrukens historia, we explore different perspectives on the crucial role that iron played in Sweden’s history. This journey through time begins more than two thousand years ago, but the main emphasis is on the thriving culture at these industrial works in the 18th and 19th century. Iron works were hubs of civilisation. New technologies, new professions and new customs were developed here. At the manor houses built near these industrial works, there was a flourishing interest in culture, art and literature, and works by great Swedish authors such as Geijer, Lagerlöf and Fröding were born here. In this richly illustrated book written by the scientific journalist Nils Johan Tjärnlund, we find clear examples of the strong influences left behind by this Swedish industrial culture: from more famous settings like the Engelsberg Ironworks world heritage site and the Walloon Ironworks in Uppland to forgotten ironworks along the coast of Norrland. Can the very idea of the Swedish folkhem – the welfare state – be traced back to the special spirit of these industrial works? Nils Johan Tjärnlund is an author, lecturer and scientific journalist who puts work into vitalising history and science. Bengt Wanselius is a photographer and picture editor who has received acclaim for several of his photography books. ISBN Swedish edition: 978-91-89069-02-2. CIVILISATION Civilisation has been described as the collectivity of values among a people or in a society. But what does it mean to be civilised? Perhaps it is an ideal, a quest to achieve a higher state of being: intellectually, artistically or financially. Simultaneously the word can also represent self-exaltation or even xenophobia. What are the roots of civilisation and how did particular civilisations emerge in antiquity? What do we have in common today with early civilisations and what values do we still honour that originated in antiquity? This anthology, which has its origins in the internationally acclaimed Engelsberg Seminar held in 2013, consists of essays that examine how the understanding of the concept civilisation has changed, from its birth to that of today’s advanced world powers. NATION, STATE AND EMPIRE With the end of the Cold War and the triumph of globalisation, many believed that nationalism now was a thing of the past: instead the opposite is true. Today, we can see nationalism spreading across the world, as populistic and anti-democratic movements grow stronger. Belonging somewhere seems to become even more important in a time of economic and social uncertainty. In a globalised world, identity, citizenship, and belonging are consequently connected to birthplace and an established residence. The essays in this anthology are based on the Engelsberg Seminar in 2017, where different kinds of identity – tied to different kinds of communities – were considered. How does a nation emerge? How is unity achieved in an empire with a diverse population? HILMA AF KLINT Sketchbook of The Five, No. 1 From 5 October 1896 to 12 April 1898 Hilma af Klint was part of a group of female friends who called themselves ‘The Five’, that was active between 1896 and 1908. Together with Anna Cassel, Cornelia Cederberg, Sigrid Hedman, and Mathilda Nilsson, af Klint had been a member of the ‘Edelweiss Society’ – a group that combined Christian ideas, Theosophy, and Spiritualism. The Five received messages from higher spirits, that they called the High Masters, and during their seances they documented the messages in trance-like states with automatic writing and drawing. There are 15 sketchbooks from this period, and Bokförlaget Stolpe are now making one of them (work number HaK 1515, S2) available in a facsimile edition. Hilma af Klint, 1862–1944.
