INTRODUCTION

Reviews are important tools for evaluating books. Online databases have made finding book reviews
quicker and easier. This brief guide lists the major resources available to Cornell users for finding book
reviews. The print resources listed are available in the reference collections of Olin Library. This is not an
exhaustive list of ways to find book reviews. Many disciplines have indexes that may be used to locate
book reviews for that subject area (literature, history, religion, and so on). A few examples are listed here.
Reference staff can guide you.

Book review indexes provide a citation to the review appearing in a newspaper, magazine, or journal.
Search the newspaper, magazine, or journal title in the Cornell Library Catalog to find all the formats we
own for that journal. Amazon.com, ARBA online, Bowker's Books in Print, JSTOR, ProQuest Research
Library, [formerly known as Periodical Abstracts], and ProQuest Historical Newspapers have the full text
of at least some reviews (or online links to them).

For further information or to locate titles not listed here, consult a reference librarian.

DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN BOOK REVIEWS AND LITERARY CRITICISM

The simplest criterion for distinguishing book reviews from literary criticism is the time of publication of
the review/critical article compared to the original publication date of the book. Book reviews are written
around the time the book was originally published; literary criticism appears in later years. For example,
reviews of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby that appeared in 1925 or 1926 (right after the novel was
published) are book reviews, while literary criticism about the novel continues to be written today. MLA
Bibliography is an important index of literary criticism. In general, the sources cited in this guide find
reviews that reflect the response near the time of a book's publication.

ONLINE RESOURCES FOR FINDING BOOK REVIEWS

Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (ABELL).
     (Part of Literature Online)
1920 to date. "ABELL, which can be accessed via the Criticism screen in [Literature Online's]
Search: Criticism and Reference, contains more than 860,000 records covering monographs,
periodical articles, critical editions of literary works, book reviews, collections of essays and
doctoral dissertations published anywhere in the world; unpublished doctoral dissertations are
covered for the period 1920-1999. The bibliography consists of 77 volumes, beginning in 1920
and issued annually; a number of items published between 1892 and 1919 have been indexed
       retrospectively.

All aspects and periods of English literature are covered, from Anglo-Saxon times to the present

including scholarly material in languages other than English." [from LION's Information Centre]

Amazon.com.
      Free online resource.
Date coverage unknown. Primarily a bookselling site, Amazon.com sometimes
includes the full text of some published book reviews--"Editorial reviews". Their
"Search inside the book" function allows viewing of selected, scanned pages--
usually the covers, table of contents, index, and an excerpt from the main text.
Also includes user reviews, of highly variable quality and usefulness. Overall, a
very useful site for evaluating recent trade and academic books. Access to the
scanned table of contents and index is very useful for nonfiction titles.

fiction and non-fiction titles. Book reviews are selected from journals in the
humanities, sciences, social sciences and library review media.

are starred. Click on the book title to open the record, then click on the
Reviews tab. Full record also may have synopses/annotations, book jacket text,
media mentions, list of awards, and the full text of first chapters [aka Dial a
Book].

full-text database containing the back issues of several hundred scholarly journals
in the humanities, social sciences, mathematics, music, ecology and botany,
business, and other fields. List of journals included and years covered. To find
book reviews, select Advanced Search. In the Advanced Search page, type one
or two keywords from the book title in the first search box. Under Narrow Your

contents of 4,250 periodicals in the humanities and social sciences, from their first

international, including journals in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and
other Western languages. Journals that are indexed in PCI which have full text
available in JSTOR are linked at article level to enable users to search the index
and navigate directly to the article in the JSTOR archive.
ProQuest Historical Newspapers.
Full image access to three major U.S. Newspapers: The New York Times, 1851-
2006; the Wall Street Journal, 1889-1992; and the Washington Post, 1877-1993.
Most useful for the Times and for the drawings and illustrations that sometimes
accompany Times reviews. Searches by document type can only be limited to
"reviews." This includes theatrical and musical reviews.

English-language reviews of European reference titles. The journal is published in
two forms: the electronic Reference Reviews Europe Online (RREO) and the
      printed Reference Reviews Europe Annual(RREA) (Olin Z 1002 .R32, 1995- ,
latest volume in Reference). Much of the content consists of abstracts in English
of reviews that originally appeared in the German journal Informationsmittel: IFB
(IFB) [previous title Informationsmittel für Bibliotheken]. IFB, edited by Klaus
Schreiber of the Württembergische Landesbibliothek in Stuttgart, and formerly
published by the Deutsches Bibliotheksinstitut in Berlin, currently is available
only online. Since its inception in 1993, it has reviewed more than 500 titles per
year, covering reference materials in all subjects and formats. Although German-
language publications predominate in IFB, titles in other European languages,
including French, Icelandic, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, and Spanish
are also covered. The reviewers for IFB are mostly German librarians and
academics. The abstractors for Reference Reviews Europe are mainly North
American librarians." [from the RREO Website; more information]

necessary to reflect the evaluations of the articles. Each citation includes the name
of the periodical, page and date of review as well as the number of words in the
review. Published monthly and cumulated annually into a bound volume

        Covers 1972-1977. A short-lived effort by John W. Brewster and Jospeh A.
McLeod at North Texas State University. Because it indexes reviews of books
about non-North American history (and therefore supplements what is available
in America: History & Life), I include it here. Also as an example of the other

POSTSCRIPT
The following title, an annotated bibliography of book review "citations" ("a book review citing source ...
which cites reviews from more than one periodical. Such sources may be book review indexes per se,
periodical indexes, serial bibliographies, monographic bibliographies and specialized tools such as Science
Citation Index" [Introduction]), is useful for finding obscure book reviews, including many in non-
English-language sources.

A Guide to Book Review Citations: A Bibliography of Sources. Compiled by Richard
A. Gray. Columbus: The Ohio State University Press, 1968.(Olin Stacks Z 1035 .A1
G78)

Another approach to finding reviews not otherwise uncovered by the above resources is to enter the
phrase books reviews in the Cornell Library Catalog as a subject search. Browsing the list of subject
headings generated by this search reveals many additional sources of book reviews. And remember that the
reference staff is available to assist you.
