INVITATION TO ARTISTS – DESIGN CONCEPT
BACCA is partnering with the Albanese Development Corporation to design and install outdoor public arts elements
to be featured at a senior living community at 11 Park Drive in Wyandanch, NY.

BACCA is seeking the services of (1) artist to design a wall of sculptural fencing and illuminated screens, as well as
other sculptural elements as outlined. The artist’s ability to fabricate the proposed design is not necessary, however,
artists with the ability to fabricate elements of their own designs or partner with a fabricator should indicate this in their
    proposal.

    Invitation Details
     • Please email info@babylonarts.org by Saturday, February 6, 2021 with your intention to respond to this
invitation. Final applications are due no later than Friday, February 26, 2021.
     • Questions concerning this invitation may be submitted by email and will be addressed as they are received. If the
response will assist other artists, it will be sent to all. An information session will be held virtually.
     • Please find additional visual information and details on the supplementary document.
     • The project design committee will review all submissions, and the top (3) designers selected for consideration
will be contacted to schedule an interview during the week of March 8th-12th.
     • A site visit will not be possible prior to the interview.
     • Artist designs will be produced by fabricators chosen by BACCA and the Albanese Development Corporation.
     • Entries submitted by artists across Long Island will be accepted. Special consideration will be given to artists
residing in Wyandanch and surrounding Town of Babylon Hamlets: Wheatley Heights, Deer Park, and West
Babylon, or applications demonstrating a connection to the Wyandanch Community.
     • An honorarium in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to the artist whose design is selected for representation
        in this project.

    Project Description
Location: 11 Park Drive in Wyandanch, NY - Senior Living Facility, under construction.
The proposed location is adjacent to a large public parking garage and the Wyandanch LIRR Train Station.

Designs are sought for the following four separate structural elements:
         1. Art Panels: A semi-circular fence surrounding a circular courtyard. The envisioned design is for a
fence comprised of separate panels approximately 8’ to 10’ wide forming a partial semi-circle around an
open decoratively paved circular area with a diameter of 56’ ft. However, artists are not limited to this
arrangement or size. The design should ideally include metal art panels with colored glass inserts. Ground
mounted backlighting will be provided for the art experience to continue at night. It will also be illuminated
by natural light during the daytime. This design will occur on a backdrop of landscape beyond. These
panels should incorporate the artistic design used for the outer fence in a way that ensures the overall
              design is cohesive.

2. Outdoor Art Exhibit: One free-standing sculpture to be centered on the decoratively paved circular
area, intended to enhance the enclosed courtyard. Material used for this piece should be such that it will
endure over time without need for substantial maintenance. This piece should reflect the artist’s vision of
the community’s heritage. Any proposed sculptures should compliment the panel design and relate visually
         to the surrounding space.

The intent of both the art panels and free-standing sculpture is to provide a pedagogical experience for
the residents of the community that is appropriately-sized for the location. Both of these designs should
be sympathetic to the art installation completed at the LIRR parking garage (pictured below).

       3. Mosaic Pavement Surface: The open decoratively paved circular area (diameter of 56’) is envisioned to
consist of both an exposed aggregate pavement and mosaic art inserts. Mosaic designs should be
            included.

       4. Area 2: Residential Courtyard Custom Fence
This second custom fence is intended to enclose the entire residential courtyard between the two projections of
the building façade. The fence height is intended to be between 4’ and 5’ tall to provide a sense of security for
the senior population of the building without conveying a stark separation of the outdoor courtyard from the
remainder of the community. The entire length of this proposed fence is 135’ long, including 2 gates. The design
of this fence should mimic that of the art panels located in the South Plaza in a more simplified manner.

Fence panels may be designed to be fabricated to up to 4-5’ x 8’ in horizontal orientation for the perimeter
fencing. Panels may repeat one design, or each panel may include a different design. This element should be
       clearly communicated in your submission.

    • The fence and panels will be fabricated out of metal and may be optionally coated in a variety of colors
    • Large-sized panels will be framed to ensure long-term durability.
    • This fence will be illuminated by natural light.
    • Designs may incorporate other materials, such as glass, to add color and interest.
    • Designs proposing the use of glass or other integrated materials are preferred.
    • Artists should consider safety protocols and concerns in their design as the final structure will be a functional
       object in a public space.
    • Visual elements with a relationship to Wyandanch history and culture are recommended and will be strongly
       considered.

Application & Presentation Requirements
     • Items specified should be submitted by email in a PDF file no larger than 6MB.
     • Present visual examples of previously completed 2-Dimensional or 3-Dimensional art and design work.
     • In writing, describe your approach and the intention of your design. Communicate your artistic message. Explain
why your design is well suited for the location and use of this project, including its historic and cultural context.
     • Final design submissions should include, in writing, measurements of each panel. Design concepts should be
displayed from 2-3 unique perspectives so that a 3-dimensional portrait of the proposed elements will be
        understood.
     • Sculptors and Fabricators only: The ability to fabricate elements of your proposed design is not required,
however, if you are interested in fabricating any element of this proposed design, such as the central sculpture
or mosaic, designs should include a proposed project budget and bid for the completion and delivery of the
proposed element. Additionally, artists should specify their requirements to secure their sculptural elements, if
applicable. The final (3) selected artists will have the opportunities to submit bids for self-fabrication of these
        elements.
     • Descriptive text should be included to aid the selection committee’s full understanding of the artist’s intent and
design. Artists should clearly communicate the dimensions, colors, and materials integrated into the proposed
        panel design.
     • Final renderings should be submitted in PDF format and include the artist name and contact information on each
        page.
     • Applications will be selected based on the following criteria: artist qualifications, community impact, design
quality, and design feasibility (How well does the proposed design translate into a structural element?).
     • BACCA and the Albanese Development Corporation reserve the right to modify proposed designs if
modifications are necessary for the structural integrity or functionality of the final installation. Artists may be
consulted throughout the fabrication process and will be required to remain accessible.
