The pandemic….

 • Still locked down, after over a year, due to the COVID-SARS 2 pandemic.
 • Facemasks and social distancing will be with us for quite some time

    2020 Annual Report (2) – Hugh Epsom(Chairman)

The good news….

         • Vaccination programmes are well underway
         • Vaccination passports should be available by summer
         • We should be able to start getting back to a more normal life during the
           second half of 2021.

    2020 Annual Report (3) – Hugh Epsom(Chairman)

    Post-BREXIT Challenges
• Non-acceptance of British boating certification in Spain (or other EU state)
• The need to import, and pay import duty, on non-Spanish flagged yachts in Spain (or other
EU state) after 18 months from the beginning of this year.
• The inability of RYA sailing schools to legally operate in Spain (or other EU state)

Spain is expected issue by Royal
Decree before the summer to resolve
    this problem

                                                                                                      3

2020 Annual Report (4) – Hugh Epsom(Chairman)

Virtual Racing

• Offshore and inshore virtual racing for CBYA members via
  Virtual Regatta.
• Inshore racing was facilitated via our associated
membership of the RYA, which allowed us to plan and run
our own weekly races using J/70 yachts similar to the TOMs.
• The offshore races included the Transat AG2R La Mondiale,
Cape Town to Goa, and the Vendée Globe 2020-2021.
• The offshore virtual race champion was definitely John
Allison, aided by his Boxing Kangaroos virtual race group!

2020 Annual Report (7)– Hugh Epsom(Chairman)

                                    Safety Improvements

                                   • An unfortunate CBYA accident on the TOMs during a RCNC
organised one-day regatta, prompted us to review our safety
                                     procedures.

                                   • This resulted in the development of safety briefing guidelines
for not only the TOMs, but also for cruiser charters, Hobie Cats
                                     and dinghies.

                                   • The CBYA also invested in five handheld marine VHF radios,
three kept on charge at RCNC for CBYA TOM sailing, and
two for our monthly CBYA day charters.

                                                                                                                5

2020 Annual Report (10)– Hugh Epsom(Chairman)
  Volunteering
  • The CBYA only operates due to volunteers - we rely on their support.
  • Committee members are also volunteers - we all work hard to keep the CBYA running.
  • Not necessary to sit on the committee, or be a full- time resident in Spain, as we are keen to
    promote job-sharing.
  • If anyone would like to help out in running, or helping to run, any CBYA sections and/or events,
please contact me, or a member of the Committee.

      More volunteers required!!!

      Succession Planning
      • The current Committee and volunteers will all need to be replaced as we don´t intend to
carry on forever! We are currently looking for:
          1. A Boating Officer
          2. Assistant Webmaster
          3. Press Relations Co-ordinator

2020 Annual Report (11) – Hugh Epsom(Chairman)

Proposal: Change title of CBYA Chairman to CBYA Commodore

(for all CBYA activities except for formal communications with Spanish authorities)

  Reasons:
  1. More logical when being hosted by, or hosting, events with other sailing clubs (e.g., the Royal
     London Yacht Club)
  2. Better understood title when communication with other sailing organisations outside Spain.
  3. May make succession planning easier

  Summary:
  • Maintained CBYA membership despite the pandemic
  • CBYA finances in good shape
  • Maintained as many activities as possible during lock-down
  • Improved CBYA safety standards
  • Initiated website upgrade

Over thirty now signed up to sail the five yachts – still
looking for a few more. Confident that we will have a
                                       full complement in time.

 Refunds
 • Committee has agreed to refund deposit payments to those unable to join the trip this year.
 • Refunds will be made in two tranches – we will advise when we are in a position to pay.
 • The trip must be self-financing, so we must find replacements before making refunds.
 • No partial payments will be made, as we do not want to set a precedent .

   2020 Boating Report(9) (Hugh Epsom)
     Powerboats and Raft-ups

The CBYA organises social “Raft-ups” every
summer. This is open to CBYA boat-owning
members and involves both sailing & motor
boats. We meet at a pre-agreed offshore
location between Javea & Moraira, which
could be El Portet, Cala Blanca, Sardine Bay or
Tango Bay. The boat owners select their own
     crew/guests. Activities include swimming, eating
& drinking. Usually an excellent day out!
