JOHANN JACOB FROBERGER
AT THE ORGAN AND THE HARPSICHORD

It is difficult to overestimate the importance of Johann Jacob Froberger (1616-
1667) within the rich tradition of seventeenth-century keyboard art. Through
his travels and wide contacts intimately familiar with the Italian, the French, the
South-German as well as the North-German traditions, he forged a strong and
truly cosmopolitan ‘European’ keyboard style. This found compositional
expression both in harpsichord music (the suites, most of the toccatas) and in
organ music (some toccatas, principally the fantasias ricercars, canzonas and
capriccios). The performance of this repertoire forms a particularly fascinating
challenge.
