2403. Tom Suomalainen Handbuilding Workshop
Working with slab, coil, hand formed and wheel formed shapes,
participants will explore the possibilities of using a variety of
shapes in creating assemblage sculptures. Texture, pattern and
color will be integrated into the work. The small scale sculptures
can be a final product or considered a maquette for larger works
to be created later. All materials provided.

Tom Suomalainen has an MFA in ceramics from Tulane University
and 50 years plus working in clay. Tom has taught at Penland
Marbleized bowls
School of Craft and was the first fulltime instructor at the Arts
and Craft Association, which eventually became the Sawtooth
School for Visual Art.

2402. Marbleized Porcelain Bowls Kala Kasi (Fisher) sculpture by Tom Suomalainen
Add a new dimension to your pottery bowls with the
addition of colored clay. Learn how to make colored
porcelain using Mason stains, and then use that clay
to create marbleized effects. This hands-on workshop

Art meets science in the world of botanical illustration. This
course will introduce the student to the techniques used by
botanical artists to create small plant studies in watercolor.
PAINTING Exercises include drawing for botanical accuracy, using
