Plans announced for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Central Weekend 2022
There will be year-long Platinum Jubilee celebrations throughout the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and around the
world as communities come together to celebrate The Queen’s historic reign.

In 2022, Her Majesty The Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate
a Platinum Jubilee, seventy years of service, having acceded to the throne on 6th
February 1952 when Her Majesty was 25 years old.

Throughout the year, Her Majesty and members of the Royal Family will travel
around the country to undertake a variety of engagements to mark this historic
occasion culminating with the focal point of the Platinum Jubilee Weekend in June.

An extended bank holiday, from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June, will provide an
opportunity for communities and people throughout the United Kingdom to come
together to celebrate the historic milestone. The four days of celebrations will
include public events and community activities, as well as national moments of
reflection on The Queen’s 70 years of service.

Thursday 2nd June
The Queen’s Birthday Parade (Trooping the Colour)
Over 1,400 parading soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians will come together in
the traditional Parade to mark The Queen's official birthday, usually held on the
second Saturday in June.

Beginning at Buckingham Palace, the Parade will move down The Mall to Horse
Guard's Parade, joined by Members of the Royal Family on horseback and in
carriages. The Parade will close with the traditional RAF fly-past, watched by The
Queen and Members of the Royal Family from the Buckingham Palace balcony.

Platinum Jubilee Beacons
The United Kingdom’s long tradition of celebrating Royal Jubilees, Weddings and
Coronations with the lighting of beacons will be continued to mark the Platinum
Jubilee. Beacons will be lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of
Man and UK Overseas Territories.

For the first time, beacons will also be lit in each of the capital cities of the
Commonwealth countries to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Friday 3rd June
Service of Thanksgiving
A Service of Thanksgiving for The Queen’s reign will be held at St Paul’s Cathedral.
Further events will be announced in due course.

Saturday 4th June
The Derby at Epsom Downs
Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by Members of the Royal Family, will attend
the Derby at Epsom Downs.

Platinum Party at the Palace
The BBC will stage and broadcast a special live concert from Buckingham Palace that
will bring together some of the world’s biggest entertainment stars to celebrate the
most significant and joyous moments from The Queen’s seven-decade reign.

Members of the public will be invited to apply to attend this special event and details
of the ballot for UK residents to secure audience tickets will be released in due
course.

Sunday 5th June
The Big Jubilee Lunch
Every year since the idea began in 2009, The Big Lunch has encouraged
communities to celebrate their connections and get to know each other a little bit
better, coming together in a spirit of fun and friendship. In 2022 The Big Lunch will
bring the Jubilee celebrations into the heart of every community.

People are invited to share friendship, food and fun with neighbours as part of the
Platinum Jubilee celebrations. A Big Jubilee Lunch can be big or small - street party
or picnic, tea and cake or a garden barbeque.

The Platinum Jubilee Pageant
A pageant featuring over 5,000 people from across the United Kingdom and the
Commonwealth will take place against the backdrop of Buckingham Palace and the
surrounding streets.

It will combine street arts, theatre, music, circus, carnival and costume and
celebrate the service of Her Majesty’s reign, as well as honouring the collective
service of people and communities across the country.

The official emblem for The Queen's Platinum Jubilee in 2022 has been revealed.

The emblem will be used for all official merchandise commemorating The Queen’s
Platinum Jubilee, and across digital and social media.

The emblem was designed by 19-year-old graphic design student Edward Roberts.
Edward's design was selected as the winning entry of Her Majesty The Queen’s
Platinum Jubilee Emblem Competition, run in conjunction with the V&A Museum.

The official emblem is available for download immediately, free of charge. It is
available for use for all activities associated with the Platinum Jubilee celebrations
including community and national events, publications, social media, retail and
merchandising.

A set of guidelines for its use is also available. English and Welsh versions of the
logo are available for download.

The Queen’s Green Canopy
What is The Queen’s Green Canopy?
The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique tree planting initiative created to
mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the
United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee.”

Everyone from individuals to Scout and Girlguiding groups, villages, cities, counties,
schools and corporates will be encouraged to play their part to enhance our
environment by planting trees during the official planting season between October
to March. Tree planting will commence again in October 2022, through to the end
of the Jubilee year.

With a focus on planting sustainably, the QGC will encourage planting of trees to
create a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nation, which will
benefit future generations.

As well as inviting the planting of new trees, The Queen’s Green Canopy will
dedicate a network of 70 Ancient Woodlands across the United Kingdom and
identify 70 Ancient Trees to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70 years of service.

The Queen’s Baton Relay
Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games
Birmingham 2022 will stage the 16th official Queen’s Baton Relay – an epic journey
across the Commonwealth, with The Queen’s Baton visiting all 72 nations and
territories, reaching Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania, the Caribbean and the Americas.

The Relay will begin in October 2021, once Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has
placed her message to the Commonwealth into the Baton.

The Baton will then travel for 294 days, connecting communities in every corner of
the Commonwealth, embracing unique cultures and sharing stories.

This collective journey will ignite hope, solidarity and collaboration for the next
generation, with these stories leaving us all inspired to take on the challenges that
matter most to us.

Lining the length of the curved shape and woven throughout the Baton is a
platinum strand, paying homage to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, in her Platinum
Jubilee year.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacons

There is a long and unbroken tradition in our country of celebrating Royal Jubilees,
Weddings and Coronations with the lighting of beacons - on top of mountains,
church and cathedral towers, castle battlements, on town and village greens,
country estates, parks and farms, along beaches and on cliff tops.

In 1897, beacons were lit to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. In 1977,
2002 and 2012, beacons commemorated the Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilees
of The Queen, and in 2016 Her Majesty’s 90th birthday.

More than 1,500 beacons will be lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel
Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories, and one in each of the capital
cities of Commonwealth countries in recognition of The Queen’s long and selfless
service.

The beacons will enable local communities, individuals and organisations to pay
tribute to her as part of the official Platinum Jubilee Weekend of celebrations.

The Platinum Jubilee Medal
Design features portrait of Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Crest
The Queen's Platinum Jubilee Medal is a medal created to mark the seventieth
anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the thrones of the United Kingdom
and other Commonwealth realms in 2022.

The medal, which has been designed by Timothy Noad of the College of Arms, will
be awarded to individual George and Victoria Cross recipients and serving members
of the Armed Forces and emergency services, among others, and acts as a token of
the nation’s thanks to those who diligently serve the public.

The history of awarding medals to mark Royal Jubilee’s dates back to the Victorian
period when the first medal was awarded to mark the 50th anniversary of Queen
Victoria’s reign.

The medal, which is made of nickel silver, features an image of The Queen with the
Latin inscription ‘Elizabeth II Dei Gratia Regina Fid Def’ which stands for ‘Elizabeth
II, By the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith’.
