Welcome to the 2021 Chestermere Fire Service (CFS) Full Time Firefighter recruitment process. This
package has been produced to inform you of the position requirements and your role as a potential
candidate in our recruitment program.
What follows is an explanation of the stages of the recruitment process. Please thoroughly read this
information and ensure that you have the necessary qualifications before proceeding further in the
process.

2021 CFS Full-Time Firefighter Recruitment 3Full-Time Firefighter Job Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
The following are the minimum qualifications required to apply:
ü Grade 12 or GED supplemented by recognized technical training
ü NFPA 1001 Level II Certification
ü NFPA 1072 HazMat Awareness & Operations
ü NFPA 1002 – Driving & Maintenance
ü NFPA 1002 – Pumping Operations
ü Valid Standard First Aid CPR C or BLS and AED certifications
ü Graduate from an EMR or FMR program (or higher level of medical training). ACP registration
not required.
ü Unrestricted Alberta Class 3 / 4 Q (or higher) – Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake
Endorsement - Graduated Driver’s License is not accepted.
ü Current five (5) year driver’s abstract with minimal infractions
ü Pleasure Craft Operator’s License
ü Capable to complete a fireground physical assessment
ü Capable to complete the minimum swimming assessment
ü Capable to complete a VO2 Max physical test
ü Clear Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector checks deemed satisfactory by the City
Additional points will be issued for the following:

Although we cannot offer a guaranteed method for successfully securing a position with the CFS, we
are happy to provide some tips that will ensure the hiring process runs smoothly. Please keep the
following suggestions in mind as you progress through the application process:
1. Ensure that you thoroughly read and understand all documentation related to the recruitment
process prior to submitting your application. You do not want to invest time and money in the
process, only to be disqualified having not met the minimum qualifications and job requirements.
2. Dedicate the time to educate yourself on the City of Chestermere by reading through the website.
Ensure this is a department and community that you’re committed to serving.
3. Being able to accurately follow instructions is an important attribute in firefighting. Ensure you are
mindful and precise in following the direction provided throughout the recruitment process.
4. If your personal contact information changes during the process, inform
recruitment@chestermere.ca immediately.

Applicants must provide the following (in this order) within their application package:
¨ 1) Application Fee - $250.
o Cheque or Money order made out to “City of Chestermere” Re: 2021 Firefighter
Recruitment
o Contact the fire hall (403.272.9878) during regular business hours (0800 – 1700) to
process your application fee using Credit Card
¨ 2) Cover Letter & Resume (ensure primary email address is included)
¨ 3) Names and contact information of individuals to be contacted for character references
¨ 4) Copies of applicable fire related certificates, courses/education
¨ 5) Copies of all CPR, BLS and EMS Certificates
¨ 6) Copy of valid driver’s license & pleasure craft operator’s license
¨ 7) Copy of current 5-Year drivers abstract (obtained within the last 30 days)
¨ 8) Proof of high school completion or recognized equivalency
¨ 9) Copy of post-secondary certification and/or trade certificates (if applicable)
¨ 10) Criminal record check (within 30 days of application). Receipt is sufficient at this stage.
¨ 11) Vulnerable sector check (within 30 days of application). Receipt is sufficient at this stage.
Candidates must verify all qualifications with supporting documentation including photocopies of all
certificates, diplomas, transcripts, etc.

Upon mailing your application, email recruitment@chestermere.ca with a copy of your receipt that
includes your tracking number. Receipts are required to verify that applications were mailed prior to the
stated deadline. Late applications will not be accepted into the process.

All applications will be reviewed in detail and verified against CFS minimum qualifications.
Invites to written exam will be completed by no later than June 25th, 2021.
Unsuccessful applicants will receive a notification of regret. The notification of regret may be delayed
until the successful applicants have been informed. We request that you are patient at this stage and
wait for CFS Recruitment to contact you.
Step 3: Written Exam
Candidates who are successful in Steps 1 & 2 will be invited to participate in an online written
examination during the week of June 28th.
Candidates will be emailed a scheduled test time and a secure link to access the exam from home.
There will only be one digital online test opportunity to ensure security and fairness.
The exam will be based on IFSTA 7th edition as well as information from the City of Chestermere website.
Step 4: Fireground Physical Assessment and Minimum Swim Assessment
Candidates who are successful in the written exam will be assigned a timeslot during the week of
July 5th to attempt their Fireground Physical Assessment, which will take place at the Chestermere
Fire Hall.
CFS firefighters are required to complete a variety of tasks on the fireground. Candidates must
demonstrate proficiency in a fireground physical assessment to advance through the process. Failure
to complete the assessment under the allotted benchmark time will result in elimination from the
recruitment process.
COVID-19 Screening:
• Candidates must provide immunization records of COVID-19 vaccination OR produce a
negative COVID-19 test result (dated within 72 hours) of physical attempt
• Candidates will be screened upon arrival for COVID-19. If you answer YES to any of the
following questions, you will not be permitted to attempt the physical and will be disqualified
from the process:
o Have you been outside of the country in the past 14 days?
o Has anyone in your household been outside of the country in the past 14 days?
o Have you travelled outside of the province in the last 5 days?
o Are you feeling ill?
o Are you experiencing any of the following symptoms?
§ Fever, dry cough, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny or
stuffy nose, chills, painful swallowing, headache, muscle or joint ache, feeling
unwell, fatigue or sever exhaustion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or unexplained
loss of appetite, loss of sense of smell or taste, conjunctivitis (pink eye).
o Is anyone in your household feeling ill?
o Have you called 811 for consultation or testing?

Step 5: Minimum Swim Assessment
Candidates who are successful in their fireground physical assessment will be invited to participate in
a Minimum Swim Assessment and will be assigned a timeslot during the week of July 5th.
CFS provides water rescue and ice rescue services to the community. Candidates must demonstrate
proficiency and confidence working in and around aquatic environments. Failure to successfully
complete the Minimum Swim Assessment will result in elimination from the process.

Step 6: Formal Interview
Candidates who successfully complete the fireground physical assessment and minimum swim
assessment will be invited to a formal interview during the week of July 12th.
2021 CFS Full-Time Firefighter Recruitment 9If COVID-19 restrictions are still in place, interviews will be conducted digitally using Microsoft Teams.
If COVID-19 restrictions are lifted by this time, interviews will be conducted in-person at the Chestermere
Fire Hall. Representatives from CFS Management and the City of Chestermere Human Resources will
host the interview conversations.
The key to doing well in the interview stage is ensuring you have prepared ahead of time. Use the City’s
website to learn about both the City of Chestermere and its fire service. It is important that you have a
good understanding of the employer and the position you are applying for. You should also be able to
articulate the reasons that you would be a good fit with CFS.
If you are successful in the interview process, you will receive notification from Chestermere Fire
Recruitment. Unsuccessful applicants will receive a notification of regret. The notification of regret may
be delayed until the successful applicants have passed their employment medical evaluations. We
request that you are patient at this stage and wait for CFS Recruitment to be in touch.
Step 7: Reference / Validate Criminal Record Check
References should be included with your original application and will be contacted and asked a series
of questions related to the candidate’s employment record, work habits and interpersonal skills.
At this stage, a complete criminal record check should be submitted and will be reviewed by the
Chestermere Recruitment team.
Step 8: Station Assessment
Successful candidates will be invited to attend a one-day station assessment that will provide an
opportunity to work alongside CFS members and participate in a series of assessments, learn more
about the department and its daily operations.
The City of Chestermere requires a liability waiver be signed by any candidate participating in a station
assessment / ride along. The Liability Waiver must be submitted at the start of your assigned station
assessment.
Candidates will be screened for COVID-19 prior to building entry.
Candidates shall be dressed in appropriate workwear, including blue pants (no jeans), blue or black t-
shirt, and black CSA approved work boots. Required PPE will be provided for skills assessments.
It is highly suggested that candidates arrive with a notebook and pen to take notes throughout the day.
Station assessments will start at 0800 sharp and end at 1630hrs.
Step 9: VO2 Max
Shortlisted candidates will be contacted and asked to schedule and successfully complete a VO2 Max
assessment. CFS has partnered with TCR Sport Lab Ltd. to complete the assessments.
Candidates will be required to schedule and complete their VO2 Max assessment within 14 days of
being contacted at their own expense ($170).
2021 CFS Full-Time Firefighter Recruitment 10Should a candidate be unsuccessful at their VO2 Max attempt, they will be eliminated from the
process.
*If a candidate can produce a VO2 Max completion certificate dated within six (6) months of this stage
of the process, they will be accepted.
Step 10: Conditional Job Offer / Pre-Placement Medical / Eligibility
Successful candidates will be presented a conditional job offer and are required to complete a Pre-
Placement Fire Medical through LifeMark at their own expense ($620 + GST). The medical evaluation
will include:
ü Physician Medical
ü Vision
ü PFT
ü Audiogram
ü ECG / EKG
ü Chest X-Ray
ü Blood Work (Lab)
If you have any medical conditions that deem you unfit for work, you are obligated to disclose to CFS.
Upon receiving a “Fit for Duty” notification from LifeMark, the successful candidate(s) will be
reimbursed the expense for LifeMark ($620 + GST). Please keep and submit your receipt upon
request.
Those who have successfully earned a position on the eligibility list will be informed of their rank on
the list, which will be held for 18-months and called upon when vacancies become available.
Step 11: Probationary Skills Testing
Full-Time Firefighters are on probation for 12 months from their conditional job offer date. Throughout
this time, they will be required to complete a series of skills and knowledge assessments while on
duty.
Step 12: Official Job Offer
Upon successful completion of the required skills and knowledge assessments involved in the 12-
month probationary period, the candidate will be provided with an Official Job Offer to join CFS in a
permanent, full-time capacity. Congratulations!
