You will explore gullies, caves, cracks and different rock formations created by the raw force of the Atlantic. 53 7 The Heritage Council Heritage Awards 2017 showcased the best of National Heritage Week and recognised the fantastic work of heritage enthusiasts across Ireland. Sharon Slater from Limerick was awarded the Heritage Hero award in recognition of her work in bringing history to life for the people of Limerick. The historian and author established www.limerickslife.com, a treasure trove of the city’s history.

Irish Seed Savers in Co. Clare won the Hidden Heritage Award for The Great Irish Garden, an event highlighting the amazing diversity and heritage of Ireland’s food crops and emphasising the need to save rare crop varieties.

Wild Strands in Co. Donegal won the Heritage Communities Award for The Foyle: Tales of Salmon Fishing, an event celebrating and documenting the rich maritime heritage of local fishermen who used to fish wild salmon on the Foyle. BirdWatch Ireland in Co. Galway won the Cool for Kids Award for Go Wild Nature Camps, an event which connected children with their local environment, revealing the wonders and importance of local biodiversity through creative exploration. 54 5 European Heritage Days Journées européennes du patrimoine European Heritage Days 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage: The Art of Sharing European Heritage Days (EHDs), a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Commission, are the most widely celebrated participatory cultural events shared by the citizens of Europe.

Over 70,000 events are organised every year in order to help raise awareness of Europe’s common heritage and the continuous need for its protection. This year, the countries taking part in European Heritage Days are celebrating the European Year of Cultural Heritage through the common theme of The Art of Sharing.

EHDs events take place in the 50 countries party to the European Cultural Convention. During this time, doors are opened to numerous monuments and sites, allowing Europe’s citizens to enjoy free visits and learn about their shared cultural heritage and encouraging them to become actively involved in the safeguarding and enhancement of this heritage for present and future generations. www.europeanheritagedays.com
