Coaches Attending:
University of Illinois – Men’s Golf Coach – Zach Barlow
Now in his fifth season on the coaching staff of the Fighting Illini men’s golf program, former
Illinois great Zach Barlow returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach on Aug. 13, 2014. A
two-time All-Midwest Region selection, Barlow was part of Illinois’ Big Ten championship teams
in 2009 and 2010.
In his first four seasons with the Illini, Barlow has helped coach the Illini to four consecutive Big
Ten Championship titles in addition to two consecutive NCAA Regional victories and four
consecutive NCAA Championships appearances. Barlow helped Illinois return to the NCAA
Championship Semifinals in three of his four seasons with the program, as the squad finished
among the top 11 in the nation in all three of his coaching campaigns. Barlow has coached four
Big Ten Players of the Year in Nick Hardy (2018), Dylan Meyer (2017), Charlie Danielson (2016)
and Thomas Detry (2015), and helped guide Meyer, Detry and Hardy to Big Ten Championship
Medalist honors in consecutive seasons.
With Barlow’s assistance, the 2014-15 squad recorded a school-record nine tournament titles,
including earning a No. 1 seed into the match play portion of the NCAA National Championship.
The 2015-16 team continued to build on that momentum, winning a program-best seven
regular season event titles on the way to a total of nine tournament victories on the year. With
Barlow’s coaching the 2015-16 squad was voted No. 1 in five Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Polls
throughout the season, and four of five starters spent the year ranked among the top-100
amateur golfers in the world.
The success continued for the Illini during the 2016-17 campaign as Barlow helped guide junior
Dylan Meyer to First Team All-America honors, on the heels of Charlie Danielson’s 2016 First
Team All-America recognition. Barlow helped build the foundation for the careers of freshmen
Bryan Baumgarten, Michael Feagles and Giovanni Tadiotto as the young squad made its 10th
consecutive NCAA Championships appearance. Juniors Meyer and Nick Hardy continued to
impress under Barlow’s assistance as the two were ranked among the top-100 amateur golfers
in the world and earned exemptions into multiple professional tournaments throughout the
year.
Meyer and Hardy continued their success during their senior seasons under Barlow’s guidance
as Hardy won his second Big Ten Individual title on his way to 2018 PING First Team All-America
honors and 2018 Big Ten Player of the Year recognition. Hardy and Meyer spent most of the
season ranked among the top 15 golfers in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, and were two of
the top-ranked golfers in the Big Ten Conference. Barlow mentored young returners in
Baumgarten and Feagles as he helped to guide them to top-five finishes at the Big Ten
Championships, on their way to another NCAA Championships appearance.

University of Notre Dame – Men’s Golf Coach – Scott Gump
Longtime PGA TOUR veteran Scott Gump completed his sixth season as the assistant coach for
the University of Notre Dame men's golf program in 2017-18, which also capped the first
season under head coach John Handrigan.

Together, the duo coached the Irish to its lowest team stroke average in over three decades,
averaging 286.25 per tournament. The Irish placed six of the lowest rounds on the program's
all-time top-10 list, in addition too six of the lowest 54-hole tournament scores in the program's
top-10 list. Furthermore, Coach Gump helped improve the season stroke averages of five
returners. The team finished 91-51-1 and recorded its best ever finish at the ACC
Championships, carding a 19-under par.
The 2016-17 Irish set a school then record with its 289.52 team stroke average while winning
four team tournaments (Notre Dame Kickoff Challenge, Georgetown Intercollegiate,
Yestingsmeier Match Play and the Battle at the Warren).

The Irish had strong performances at home in the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons, placing first
and second in the Notre Dame Kickoff Challenge, respectively, tying for first at the 2015
Fighting Irish Golf Classic, and taking first at the Battle at the Warren in 2016. In addition to
strong home performances, they posted a runner-up finish in the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play
at the Lake Jovita Country Club in February 2016.

In 2013-14, Coach Gump helped oversee Notre Dame's transition into the Atlantic Coast
Conference (ACC). The Irish posted a head-to-head record of 66-63-2 (.508) during their first
ACC season, logging a 295.06 stroke average over 33 team rounds. Highlighting the campaign
was the first Irish team tournament victory since the 2012 BIG EAST Championship, as Notre
Dame bested six other squads to win its very own Oak Hill Intercollegiate at Oak Hill Country
Club in Rochester, N.Y.
Over his first two seasons on the Irish coaching staff Gump mentored Niall Platt, who closed his
Notre Dame tenure as one of the best players in program history. Platt became the first Notre
Dame golfer, male or female, to be named to the all-ACC team during the program's first year
as a conference member in 2013-14, while also becoming just the fourth different player in
program history to earn Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Division I PING all-
Midwest Region recognition. Platt completed his career as the program scoring leader with a
final 73.17 stroke average over 122 career rounds (44 events), and won his second individual
tournament title after posting a one-under-par 209 to claim medalist honors at the 2014 Oak
Hill Intercollegiate.

In his first season on the Irish coaching staff, Gump helped guide Notre Dame to a 66-49-1
(.571) record, which included a third-place finish in the program's final appearance at the BIG
EAST Championship on the Tom Watson Course at Reunion Resort in Orlando, Fla. Notre Dame
carded the lowest score of the tournament during the event's final round, turning in an eight-
under par, 280. Irish players Cory Sciupider and Niall Platt each earned all-BIG EAST honors on
the strength of top-five finishes in the tournament's individual draw.
As a team, Notre Dame posted the fourth-best scoring average in program history in Gump's
inaugural campaign, carding a 293.95 clip over 24 total rounds. The Irish added four top-five
team placements, and Platt (Macdonald Cup) and Sciupider (C&F Bank Intercollegiate) broke
through for their first collegiate tournament victories.

Prior to his arrival at Notre Dame, Gump served as a coach and instructor at the Gary Gilchrist
Golf Academy from 2009 until June of 2012 in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. He was responsible for
instructing student-athletes in the fundamentals of the game of golf, management of emotions
and goal setting, strategic on-course planning, fitness programs and balancing life
responsibilities with golf activities.
A touring professional golfer for over 24 years, Gump earned his PGA TOUR card during the
1991 season after finishing third at the TOUR's Q School tournament. Following an 18-year stint
on both the PGA and Web.com tours, with more than $2.7 million in career earnings, Gump
holds lifetime membership status for making more than 150 cuts in 329 career PGA TOUR
starts.
Gump played in 10 career major championships, including the prestigious Masters Tournament
two times. He first competed at the Augusta National Golf Club as an amateur in 1988.
Along with 50 career top-25 finishes, Gump was a runner-up three times on the PGA TOUR,
placing second at The International in 1991, the Quad City Classic in 1998 and The PLAYERS in
1999. He finished two strokes behind tournament champion David Duval at the `99 PLAYERS, a
win that elevated Duval to the ranking of number one player in the world.

University of Oregon – Men’s Golf Coach - Brad Lanning
Lanning, who was a part of Martin’s staff from 2011-13, returns to Eugene after three years as
the head coach at Loyola Marymount. At LMU Lanning helped advance a golfer to appearances
in consecutive NCAA West Regionals, as well as All-WCC honors for top recruit Riley Elmes. He
also helped guide the Lions to their first team tournament title since 2009 winning the Bill
Cullum Invitational in 2015. Following his tenure at LMU, Lanning spent the past year as the
assistant golf pro at Sand Valley Golf Resort in Rome, Wisc.

Lanning’s previous stint at Oregon was highly successful as he helped the Ducks make back-to-
back trips to the NCAA Regionals earning a third place finish at the NCAA Golf Championships in
2011-12. Lanning and Martin have a long history of success together having been teammates
for three seasons at Stanford helping the Cardinal to a national championship title in 1994.

After college, Lanning spent six years playing professionally with stints on the Hooters Tour,
South American Tour and Canadian PGA, earning 22 top-20 finishes and four top-five finishes
before entering the coaching ranks.

Lanning accomplished a great deal upon making the transition to a high school assistant coach
with a state title and runner-up finish in two years at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in
Bradenton, Fla. After relocating to Colorado to enter a master’s program at Denver Seminary,
Lanning assisted Valor Christian High School to a pair of state championships during his two
seasons at VCHS.

A 1994 Stanford graduate with a degree in Political Science, Lanning earned his master’s in
Counseling at Denver Seminary in 2011.
