North Somerset’s wartime past
Communities in North Somerset came together – but
celebrated apart – to mark VE Day during lockdown.
Now North Somerset will be marking the 75th anniversary
of VJ Day – Victory over Japan – this summer.
It takes place on Saturday 15 August and is the
anniversary of when imperial Japan surrendered in
World War Two and brought the war to an end.
Cllr David Shopland – current chairman of North
Somerset Council – has written a tribute to the

                                                       An online book of remembrance has launched for all those
                                                       who have died as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
                                                       The virtual Remember Me book has been created by St Paul’s
                                                       Cathedral but is open for people of all faiths, beliefs or none to
                                                       contribute to. It is an opportunity to mourn every person who has
                                                       been lost to COVID-19 and it is intended that it will then become a
                                                       physical memorial at the cathedral.
