BUILDING STRONG BONDS
A Statement From the Executive Director
Meet William and Ava! They are the precious subjects of our cover photo this year. As a supporter of
Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Ohio Valley, it is likely you have already seen these sweet
faces. Both William and Ava are patients at a local feeding clinic. When they come for their clinic
sessions, they stay with their families here at the House. William and Ava developed a true friendship
while staying here. These children and families have come to know our volunteers, our team and they
look forward to seeing their “RMHC friends” during their time here. These two are just one example of
the friendships made and the support network that families and volunteers have built here at RMHC.
In addition to our feeding clinic patients, we also see many parents of NICU babies here at the House.
These parents may have stays as short as a few days or as long as a couple of months. Knowing that
they have a homelike environment just minutes away from the hospital is a relief for them. The NICU
parents also build strong bonds among each other and with RMHC staff and volunteers as well.
It is because of generous supporters like yourself who give of their time, talent and treasures to RMHC
of the Ohio Valley that families are able to stay here during times of medical treatment, illness and
hospitalizations.
2017 was a great year for RMHC of the Ohio Valley. We served more than 150 families at the
House and 5,187 meals were prepared for them. In addition, nearly $25,000 was awarded to
area organizations through the Share the Love grants program. This is thanks to a restricted gift from
McDonald’s Owners and Operators within the Ohio Valley Region. We also witnessed the growth
of our Hospitality cart program in area hospitals. All of this was made possible because of you and
people like you. Your compassion, kindness and generosity helps carry out the mission of Ronald
McDonald House Charities of the Ohio Valley every day. For that, I am forever grateful. Thank you!

Jim Long RMHC of the Ohio Valley has over 130 active
Matt Merkel volunteers who perform housekeeping and maintenance tasks as well as who keep the front desk
Michelle Musgrave operations running smoothly. Our volunteers help carry out our mission on a daily basis. They build
bonds with our families and build friendships with each other. They are truly the heart of our Home!

PROGRAM UPDATES
Share the Love
Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Ohio Valley also has a grants program. The Share the Love
grants program is possible due to a restricted gift from McDonald’s Owners and Operators within
the Ohio Valley Region. A total of 18 tri-state organizations submitted Letters of Intent for our 2017
grant cycle. Ultimately, two organizations were awarded monies for projects: Kiddie Care Ministry &
Preschool and the United Methodist Youth Home.
House
The House celebrated seven years and maintained an occupancy rate of 70% throughout 2017. 56%
of our families had a length of stay between one and three days. Another 40% of families had a length
of stay between four and 14 days. The average length of stay was 8.5 days. The largest population
of families who stayed were NICU families and families receiving medical Treatment at the St. Vincent
Hospital Pediatric Feeding Clinic.
Hospitality a la Carte
In 2017, RMHC of the Ohio Valley had Happy Wheels Hospitality Carts rolling in three area hospitals.
The Hospitality a la Carte program has seen immense growth since it’s inception here in 2015. An
additional cart was built in late 2017 for the fourth hospital to join the program and now, in 2018, a
fifth hospital has joined. Happy Wheels Carts are currently located in the following hospitals:
• Deaconess Gateway Hospital
• Deaconess Women’s Hospital
• Owensboro Health Regional Hospital
• Memorial Hospital & Health Care Center
• St. Vincent’s Hospital for Women & Children
The goal of this program is to provide a bit of comfort to those in or visiting loved ones in the hospital.
This comfort is in the form of a snack, beverage, toy or treat from the cart. We continue to receive

McDonald’s Owners and Operators within the Ohio Valley Region believe in supporting the mission of RMHC of the Ohio Valley. These owners, operators and their crew members have been an integral part of our charity. They are involved in our Share the Love grant program, event sponsorship and participation, volunteering and more. Their commitment to keeping families with critically ill children together benefits so many. We are so appreciative for all that these individuals do for RMHC!

Charlie’s Ronald McDonald House Story
Rick and Connie Dauch had just returned to
Indiana from a weekend wedding celebration
for one of their daughters. They had been
reflecting on their many blessings including a
new home in a new city with new opportunities,
a second grandchild on the way and a new son-
in-law. Amidst their reflection—the unexpected
happened. The phone call that in an instant
changed their families’ lives forever.
“Mom, they are life-flighting me. I have to
deliver the baby now.” Connie’s heart ached.

Clays for a Cause remains to be one of the most unique fundraising events in the region. This event has many contributing factors to its
success including the Kids and Clays Foundation, corporate partners, event committee members and event volunteers. Each has their

The fourth annual Clays for a Cause event, presented by Schultheis Insurance brought in over 175 shooters and raised $69,440 to
help carry out the RMHC mission.
LINKS FORE LOVE
2018 Information: August 6 at Victoria National Golf Club
Links FORE Love is held at the world renowned Victoria National Golf Club each year. This is one of the community’s most prestigious
outings. Golfers receive an exclusive shopping experience from top-of-the-line golf vendors, food, drink and contests during this
beautiful day of golf!
The golf outing was a signature event for the charity, even before the House opened. 2017 marked the ninth annual Links FORE Love
golf outing at the Victoria National location. The event raised $94,176.50 to support the mission of RMHC of the Ohio Valley.
LAUGHS FOR LOVE
2018 Information: September 22 at the Owensboro Convention Center

Laughs for Love has been our signature regional event in Jasper. Held every other year, this evening of comedy promises to provide
laughter and a delicious meal all while supporting RMHC of the Ohio valley. One of our Happy Wheels Carts rolls at Memorial
Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper and we are pleased to host this event to create awareness and support of the Charity in this
amazing community. The 2017 event raised a total of $22,370.
In 2018, we are adding a Laughs for Love event in Owensboro, hoping to create awareness and build support for the newest Happy
Wheels Cart location at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital.
LIGHTS OF LOVE
Our annual Lights of Love event was held in November at The Manor on St. Vincent’s campus. The event was successful, raising a total
of $80,097.70. Mark Your Calendar for December 2, 2018 for our Annual Tree Lighting. More details to come but we are planning
to enhance this event this year.

Julie shows great dedication in her volunteer efforts and puts in extra hours beyond the time working at the House. She is always willing to go above and beyond in a volunteer capacity. She has been volunteering for RMHC of the Ohio Valley since 2010, just months after the House opened. Julie feels like this is her way of giving back to the Charity. Her family stayed at the Ronald McDonald House in Indianapolis during her son’s hospitalization due to surgery at a young age so she felt like this was her way to pay it forward and volunteering has provided her with many rewarding moments. Thank you, Julie for all you do for RMHC!
