The Impact of Anticholinergic vs Beta Agonist on Cognition
in Persons With Spinal Cord Injury
Dr. Trbovich is a clinician researcher with a focus on autonomic dysfunction in
persons with SCI. While the majority of her research revolves around elucidating
the pathophysiology of thermoregulatory dysfunction and cooling interventions for thermo-dysregulation after SCI,
the study discussed in this award talk, was born out of a clinical question raised by her patients. In collaboration
with her mentor Dr. Kellogg, a cardiovascular physiologist and geriatrician, they sought to answer if cognition would
improve when switching from an anticholinergic to a non-anticholinergic agent for neurogenic bladder control. This
study was funded by the Claude D. Pepper Center Older Americans Independent Center under the NIH. In 2017, Dr.
Trbovich received a VA Rehabilitation and Research Career Development Award, aimed at quantifying vasomotor and
sudomotor responses to heat stress after SCI. In 2019, she led a local VA Cooperative studies program, “Exoskele-
tal-Assisted Walking in Persons with SCI: Impact on Quality of Life.” Dr. Trbovich also serves on the International Au-
tonomic Standards Committee that recently published the 2nd revision of the International Standards to document
remaining Autonomic Function after SCI. Additionally, she is a reviewer for SCI/PMR journals and funding agencies, and
mentors resident physicians in SCI clinical and research realms. As she pursues her research goals, she aims to add
to the literature to ultimately improve clinical care in the area of autonomic dysfunction for persons with SCI and to
equip and encourage PMR and SCI clinicians in training to engage in research as well.

Nursing Science program in the College of Nursing at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr.
Newman is a Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse and developed her expertise in rehabilitation
nursing during 13 years of clinical practice in acute inpatient medical rehabilitation, caring for
individuals with a variety of disabilities, including spinal cord injury. Dr. Newman’s current research
investigates the role of peer mentoring in the process of adapting to life with a spinal cord injury and
learning to self-manage consequences of the injury successfully. She is also interested in the effects of peer support
on social isolation after SCI. Her research includes application of community-engaged approaches to address issues
affecting community participation, health, and overall quality of life of individuals with spinal cord injury. She has
received funding from NIDILRR, NIH, AHRQ, and the Rehabilitation Nursing Foundation.
