Doesn’t matter, as long as you stretch first. • FLIP A COIN DAY -- Celebrating all the significant (and dumb) moments in history decided by a coin toss. Heads or Tails? It’s your call. COIN TOSS FUN FACTS: • Singer Ritchie Valens won a fateful coin toss that would cost him his life. He got the last seat on a plane that would later crash. • In 1903, a coin toss decided which one of the Wright brothers would be the first human ever to fly. Wilbur won; Orville watched. • The term ‘heads or tails’ was ‘coined’ (pun intended) in 1684. • The coin toss was introduced in football in 1892 as a way to decide which team gets first possession. HERE’S RITCHIE VALENS ‘LA BAMBA’ • OSCAR THE GROUCH DAY -- Today is the birthday of Oscar the Grouch. We don’t know how old he is, but an episode of ‘Sesame Street’ revealed he was born on June the 1st. Oscar doesn’t know what it means to have a ‘happy’ birthday, since he’s always …well, grouchy. DID YOU KNOW? … the original Oscar the Grouch wasn’t green, he was orange. They changed him halfway through the first season (in 1969) by explaining he turned green after spending his vacation in a swamp where he got ‘moldy’. That’s the Heimlich maneuver! According to the National Safety Council, 5-thousand Americans die from choking every year, so learn how to do it - it’s a lifesaver. Coincidentally, the Heimlich maneuver was invented by a guy named Dr. Henry Heimlich (what are the odds of that?!). • NATIONAL NAIL POLISH DAY -- NAIL POLISH FUN FACTS:
• It was invented by the Ancient Chinese 5-thousand years ago. Back then, women soaked their nails in a mixture of egg whites, beeswax, gelatin, and vegetable dyes. • Modern nail polish started out as car paint. In the 1920s, a French makeup artist thought the newly invented paint would look great on her nails - she was right. • The world’s most expensive nail polish costs 250-grand! It’s made with 267 carats of crushed black diamonds. • NATIONAL DARE DAY -- Star in your own personal ‘Fear Factor’ and do something crazy you normally wouldn’t dare attempt. Just keep it legal and try not to hurt yourself. Take a risk, I dare you! DID YOU KNOW? … The game ‘Truth or Dare’ has been around since the 16-hundreds. Back then, it was called ‘Questions and Commandments’ and was first mentioned in an English Dictionary in 1677 (long before Madonna pretended to invent it). • START OF THE ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON -- Today marks the beginning of the six-month Atlantic Hurricane Season and forecasters say people in hurricane-prone areas should prepare for a doozy of a summer. • THE START OF PRIDE MONTH -- Today is the start of ‘Pride Month,’ commemorating the pursuit of equality for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender people, while also celebrating the accomplishments of the LGBTQ+ community. BIRTHDAYS: • RON WOOD, 75: Musician. The longtime Rolling Stones guitarist was also a member of the classic rock bands Jeff Beck Group and Small Faces. The Oscar-winning actor with the unmistakable voice is known for roles in “Shawshank Redemption,” “Million Dollar Baby,” and “Driving Miss Daisy.” HERE’S A CLIP WITH ASSORTED SCENES WITH MORGAN FREEMAN’S VOICE • TOM HOLLAND, 26: Actor. The actor who plays “Spider-Man” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe got his start playing “Billy Elliot” on stage in London. • ALANIS MORISSETTE, 48: Singer/songwriter. The Canadian singer/songwriter broke out with her 1995 album “Jagged Little Pill,” which went on to sell more than 33 million copies and become a Broadway show. The German supermodel and Victoria’s Secret Angel hosted Lifetime’s “Project Runway” and is a judge on “America’s Got Talent.” • BRANDI CARLILE, 41: Musician. • AMY SCHUMER, 41: Comedian/Actress. She’s no “Trainwreck” today. The stand-up comic and actress won a Peabody Award for her Comedy Central show “Inside Amy Schumer.” • TERI POLO, 53: Actress. She played Pam Focker in “Meet the Parents” and mom Stef Foster on “The Fosters.” TRENDING/ODD TACO BELL IS RUNNING OUT OF MEXICAN PIZZA (:24) It lasted just two weeks, but it looks like Taco Bell is already taking their Mexican Pizza off the menu. They say it’s because a lot of their locations are sold out anyway and they can’t keep up with demand. It doesn’t help that some people are buying up more than their fair share, like the one guy who scooped up 180 Mexican pizzas in a single order. Taco Bell says they hope to make the pizzas a permanent menu item by the fall (until then, eat your heart out!) GIRL SCOUT COOKIES NOW HAVE THEIR OWN MAKEUP LINE (:22) If you really love Girl Scout cookies, you can now wear ‘em. There’s a new line of Girl Scout cookie makeup that’s inspired by some of the cookies - there’s a Thin Mints Palette, Coconut Caramel, and even a lemon lipstick. And YES, they all smell like they sound. They’re made by HipDot… the same folks who released a line of Ramen Noodle and Reese peanut butter cup- inspired makeup. FIRST LADY SAYS SHE SETTLES ARGUMENTS WITH PRESIDENT BY ‘FEXTING’ (:24) You know what texting is… and probably ‘sexting’ too, but ’FEXTING’? The First Lady just coined it (and no, it’s not dirty). She says it’s how she and President Biden settle arguments (AKA: fight-texting). She says they have to be low key about their disagreements ‘cause of all the secret service agents that are always hanging around them. FYI: Urban Dictionary has a different definition for ‘Fexting’. Let’s just say it requires you to do two things at once… DISNEY’S NEW ROLLER COASTER IS SO INTENSE THEY’RE HANGING OUT ‘BARF BAGS’ (:15) Disney World’s new ‘Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind’ rollercoaster is so intense employees are now stationed at the end to hand out barf bags just in case. The brand-new indoor ride features a crazy light show and a reverse-launch. The bags are free…for now. ‘STRANGER THINGS’ BEATS ALL TIME NETFLIX RECORD (:19) The new ‘Top Gun’ sequel wasn’t the only thing setting weekend entertainment records. The 4th season premiere of ‘Stranger Things’ has just become the most-watched English-language premiere on Netflix; it was viewed for a total of 287-million hours this past weekend alone (whatever the heck that means). The previous record was held by the season two premiere of ‘Bridgerton.’ CLICK HERE FOR THE ‘STRANGER THINGS’ THEME SONG OLD KATE BUSH SONG BECOMES NUMBER 1 AGAIN (:18) If it feels like you can’t escape Kate Bush’s old hit ‘Running up that Hill,’ you’re not the one. The song, from 1985, is number one for the first time, all thanks to Netflix. It was featured in the
season two premiere of ‘Stranger Things’ (which is set in the 80s). The song is now tops on a bunch of charts, including Apple iTunes and Spotify top 50. CLICK HERE FOR THE SONG HAND PAINTED CASKETS FOR TEXAS SHOOTING VICTIMS (:25) Over the next two-and-a-half weeks, people in Uvalde, Texas will say goodbye to 19 children and two teachers. It's one heartbreaking visitation, funeral, and burial after another. Trey Ganem is the generous soul who owns SoulShine Industries, a custom casket company. He's making personalized caskets for some of the victims, including fourth grader Eliahna Torres. Her tiny casket is decorated with llamas, neon yellow slime and the TikTok logo. ARIZONA CARDINALS PLAYER JEFF GLADNEY DIES (:26) Sad sports news: Arizona Cardinals cornerback Jeff Gladney died in a car crash on Memorial Day. He was a first round pick in 2020 by the Minnesota Vikings but they released him because he got in a little trouble with the law. He signed with the Cardinals in March. Gladney was only 25. The Cardinals issued a statement that said: "We are devastated to learn of Jeff Gladney's passing. Our hearts go out to his family, friends and all who are mourning this tremendous loss." LAW & DISORDER CANADIAN GOVERNMENT WILL DECRIMINALIZE ALL DRUGS IN 3-YEAR EXPERIMENT (:23) The Canadian government is trying something to combat overdoses… they’re decriminalizing all street drugs. It doesn’t mean drugs like cocaine, heroin and meth will be legal, but people who are caught with small amounts of them (up to 2-and-a-half grams) won’t be charged. They’re hoping it’ll encourage more people to get help for addiction. The 3-year experiment is limited to British Columbia only and starts early next year. TEXAS COMMUNITY CONSIDERS KNOCKING DOWN ROBB ELEMENTARY (:22) The survivors of that Texas school will be back in class in the fall…question is: where? Uvalde, Texas is considering tearing down Robb Elementary. They’ll have the summer to decide but already a lot of community members can’t bear to take their kids back there. Other schools like Sandy Hook and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High were either razed or rebuilt in the months after those massacres. WEIRD SCIENCE & TECH SCIENCE THINKS YOU’LL SOON BE ABLE TO HAVE CONVERSATIONS WITH YOUR DOG OR CAT (:23) Some scientists at Tel Aviv University think they’re close to building a device that can translate conversations between our pets. They’ve figured out a way to use ultrasonic frequency to basically decipher the sounds a bat makes. And while a lot of us don’t keep bats as pets, they think they can apply the same technology to listen to what dogs and cats ‘say’ (like asking for ‘food’ or their ’ball’) and translate it using artificial intelligence. STUDY: PREVIOUS COVID INFECTIONS DON’T PROTECT KIDS FROM OMICRON (:19) There’s a new study that says kids who’ve already had COVID are not naturally protected from the Omicron strain. Researchers at Boston Children’s Hospital found that antibodies produced
by old COVID infections don’t do much to zap away Omicron in kids and teens. They found the only thing that really works in kids is vaccination. YOUR MONEY/SHOPPING THE DELOREAN RETURNS AS A GULL-WING ELECTRIC VEHICLE (:26) DeLorean is going ‘back to the future’. The iconic stainless steel car featured in the movie series is about to unveil their first new model since 1982. This one is all electric and doesn’t really look much like ‘Marty McFly’s’ famous ride, but it does have those cool gull-wing doors. They haven’t said when it’ll go on sale. The new DeLorean supposedly does zero-to-60 in under three seconds, but, more importantly, takes 4-point-35 seconds to reach 88 miles-per-hour. NOW THERE’S A POPCORN SHORTAGE AT MOVIE THEATERS (:21) How’s this for a summer blockbuster? Movie theaters say there’s now a popcorn and candy shortage. The Wall Street Journal says theaters are having a hard time getting their hands on concession stand items. Even the bags they sell the popcorn in are in low supply. That’s why a lot of them are giving out those special edition plastic or metal popcorn cans for free. GAS PRICES EXPECTED TO HIT $5 NOW THAT EUROPE BANS RUSSIAN OIL (:21) Think 4-dollar a gallon gas was expensive? That cheap compared to what they’re predicting for June. Now that Europe has decided to ban Russian oil imports by the end of the year, average gas prices here are expected to hit 5 bucks in a couple of weeks. The Triple A says the national average is holding steading at 4-dollars and 62-cents a gallon… but who knows for how much longer. ‘GROSS’ NASA MOON DUST TO BE AUCTIONED (:18) Wanna buy some actual moon dust? A company is auctioning tiny bits of dirt collected during the Apollo 11 moon mission. One catch: it used to be inside a cockroach. See, NASA wanted to test if moon dirt was lethal, so they fed it to some bugs and then dissected them. Yeah, it’s gross, but it won’t kill ya (The dust is expected to sell for 400-thousand bucks). LIFE/SURVEY SAYS... STUDY: MILLENNIALS BLOCK FAMILY ON FACEBOOK OVER POLITICS (:25) Ever blocked someone on Facebook because of their political posts? More than three in four millennials have! And get this: it’s their own family members they’re saying “bye” to the most. A new survey found that the younger generation puts their Facebook foot down when it comes to content they don’t agree with. Nearly half of those surveyed from all age groups said they blocked a family member who “posted hateful, toxic, or problematic things.” STUDY: WANNA LIVE LONGER? DRINK MORE COFFEE! (:19) Your daily coffee habit may make you live a longer life! A new study says people who drink coffee every day are less likely to die early than non-coffee drinkers. And, to sweeten this great news even more: the study says you can throw some sugar in that steamy nectar of the gods, too. That increased your chances of longevity even more. ENTERTAINMENT THE SPELLING BEE IS ON! (:21)
Some really, really smart kids from all across the country are in Washington, DC this week, spelling their little hearts out. The Scripps National Spelling Bee is back! It's the first time the Bee has been in person since 2019, when the pandemic put a halt to everything. This year, though, it's a scaled back Bee, because a lot of schools and sponsors have dropped out. SET YOUR DVR'S: ‘THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF DUBAI’ IS HERE! (:28) ‘The Real Housewives’ are going international! ‘The Real Housewives of Dubai’ debuts tonight. Dubai is the largest city in the United Arab Emirates and is known for being super extravagant, so a perfect fit. This time around, all the drama and catfighting surrounds six socialite business owners in the land of the uber wealthy. As for the ladies: you get an owner of a fruitcake company (!!), a model with a skincare line, a maternity fashion designer, and more. Hope they like to flip tables in Dubai!
