                        STUDENT DEVELOPMENT

When my team puts together a calendar, we aim
foremost to glorify God, the benefactor of the
knowledge and talent our speakers and musi-
    cians display throughout the year.

The speakers will bring a variety of perspectives
on topics and issues drawn from the arts, scienc-
es, and humanities. The programs are intended
to promote broad discussion and active response
from the academic community, to the classrooms
and residence halls. The goal is to broaden our
appreciation of creation and culture, equipping us
to become discerning agents of redemption.

The author (Harriet Jacobs) is the protagonist in
this solo piece which illuminates in shocking fashion
the traumas of slavery, particularly for
 women and children.

This stage adaptation, by Wynn Handman, culminates
in Harriet Jacobs’ powerful and moving experiences
during the seven years she spent hiding in The Loop-
hole, a crawl space in her grandmother’s attic.

The truth of the author’s evocative words will emerge
with a visceral experience that may become an
enduring part of the audience’s understanding of the
 “peculiar institution” of slavery.
