STUDENT DEVELOPMENT
When my team puts together a calendar, we aim
foremost to glorify God, the benefactor of the
knowledge and talent our speakers and musi-
cians display throughout the year.
The speakers will bring a variety of perspectives
on topics and issues drawn from the arts, scienc-
es, and humanities. The programs are intended
to promote broad discussion and active response
from the academic community, to the classrooms
and residence halls. The goal is to broaden our
appreciation of creation and culture, equipping us
to become discerning agents of redemption.

KEN SHAW
“Student Dedication”
with our University President
Ken Shaw, ’80, took office as the 27th president of
Southern Adventist University on June 1, 2021. Shaw
had previously served for seven years as president
of Southwestern Adventist University in Keene, Texas.
Shaw holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from
Southern Adventist University, master’s degree in
mathematics from Middle Tennessee State University
and doctoral degree in mathematics education
from the University of Georgia.
Shaw is the first university president who is also an
alumni. His entire family also graduated from Southern:
his wife, Ann (Kennedy), earned her nursing degree in
1979; their daughter, Kate Myers, earned her associate
and bachelor’s degrees in nursing in 2008 and 2009;
and their son, Martin, earned his pastoral care
degree in 2012.

Life Coach: “Mental
Health Awarness”

Cortney Lantigua is an inspiring motivational speaker,
trauma-informed life coach and determined advocate.
Her philanthropic and advocacy work for youth and
adult survivors of childhood trauma earned her a
CC
nomination as one of Nashville’s “Top 30 Under 30.”
She delivers trauma-informed programs to students
across the country and creates professional develop-
ment programs on trauma-informed policies and the
nervous system for school faculty and administration.
She understands firsthand how unresolved emotional
pain can have lasting effects on the nervous system
and mental health. Using a combination of powerful
storytelling and trauma-informed resources and tools
for building a better foundation for living, Cortney
empowers audiences and individuals to understand
and befriend their nervous system.

“Service Expo”
Alex Bryan, D.Min., serves as Chief Missions Officer for
Adventist Health. In this role, he leads and supports a
systemwide mission team in promoting and integrating
the organization’s mission of “living God’s love by
inspiring health, wholeness and hope.”
Alex joined Adventist Health in 2018 as the mission
identity and spiritual care executive. In that role, he led
Adventist Health’s strategy around alignment to mission,
spiritual care, church and faith community relations and
theological and ethical foundations of mission.
Alex’s formal education includes undergraduate studies
at Southern College, with majors in history and religion,
a Master of Divinity degree from Andrews University,
and a doctoral degree in missiology and leadership
from George Fox University.

JOHNSON
“Constitution Day Celebration”
Prior to Mr. Johnson’s appointment to serve as
NAD Public Affairs and Religious Liberty Director,
he was a partner at Saul Ewing, and co-chair of
the Securities Transactions and Regulations Practice
Group. He and his wife Zina have three children.
Mr. Johnson served nine years as Staff Attorney and
Branch Chief in the Division of Investment Management
for the United States Security Exchange Commission.
In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Johnson was
appointed by President Obama and confirmed by the
U.S. Senate to be the Chairman of the Securities
Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC).
Mr. Johnson received his B.A. degree from Andrews
University (National Honor) and his J.D. from Howard
University, Washington, D.C.

“Fall Week of Prayer”
David is a Light Bearers speaker and ARISE
co-founder and instructor. Since his baptism
in 1999, he has traveled the globe preaching
and teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ.
He and his wife Violeta are the happy parents
of two boys, Landon and Jabel. They enjoy
outdoor activities such as backpacking,
climbing, running, fly fishing, and reading.

INAUGURATION
This formal ceremony will commemorate the installation
of the university’s 27th president, Ken Shaw EdD.
The first alum to serve as Southern’s president.
Shaw will be joined by church, community, and univer-
sity leaders to mark this auspicious occasion. Special
performances include School of Music ensembles
and the I Cantori choir.

DAVID WRIGHT
“GYCSE”
Born in Fresno, California, David Wright moved to
Collegedale, Tennessee, at age five when his father
accepted an invitation to join the pastoral staff of
the Collegedale Church.
He attended A. W. Spalding Elementary School, Col-
legedale Academy, and Southern Adventist University,
graduating in 2003 with a B.A. degree in theology.
He then studied at the Seventh-day Adventist
Theological Seminary at Andrews University,
where he completed his M.Div. degree. He later
earned his doctorate in family ministry from
Andrews as well.
While at Southern, Pastor Wright became acquainted
with Elizabeth Wilson, and they have now been
married for 17 years.

JUD LAKE
“Adventist Heritage”
Jud Lake is Professor of Preaching
and Adventist Studies in the School of
Religion at Southern Adventist University,
Colegedale, Tennessee (USA). Before
coming to Southern in 1997, he served
as a pastor for ten years in the Gulf States
Conference and two years as youth pastor/
Bible teacher at Broadview Academy in
the Illinois Conference. He is a passionate
advocate of expository preaching and Ellen
White’s prophetic ministry. Dr. Lake is the
author of “Ellen White Under Fire” (2010)
and “A Nation in God’s Hands: Ellen White
and the Civil War” (2017), both published
by Pacific Press. He is married to Elise,
the love of his life, and they have
four adult children.

Kaitlin Curtice is a poet, author and public speaker.
As an enrolled citizen of the Potawatomi Nation and
someone who has grown up in the Christian faith, Kaitlin
writes on the intersection of Indigenous spirituality, faith
in everyday life, and decolonization within the church.
Kaitlin travels around the country speaking on faith and
justice within the church as it relates to Indigenous peo-
ples. She has been a featured speaker at Why Christian,
Evolving Faith, The Revolutionary Love Conference, The
Festival of Faith and Writing, and more.

“SA Town Hall Meeting”
The final convocation of the fall semester
encourages students to ask questions about
campus life during an open forum with the
Student Association president, Jhosuet Esten,
and the university president, Ken Shaw.
Both leaders will sit on stage and welcome
nearly any honest question, whether important
or even a bit silly. Microphones will be available
so that students can feel free to ask questions
on a variety of topics, ranging from sports fa-
cilities on campus to dining options to religious
programming or special events.

“Sexual Integrity Week”
Susan Norris is the founder and executive director of
rescuing hope and has been involved in the fight against
sex trafficking in America since 2010.
Her passion is to raise awareness about the issue,
educate potential victims and first-responders, and en-
courage and empower survivors to live an abundant life.
Susan is a member of the Georgia state human
trafficking task force. She is capital P.O.S.T Certified
to train law enforcement in Georgia and is a
class certified speaker.
Susan is a wife and mother of two adult children. She
and her husband live in Atlanta, Georgia.

Student Week of Prayer is held every spring semester
and serves as an opportunity for students to engage
with God more deeply through prayer activities,

how God has transformed their lives and their faith.

BRIDGET KIBBEY
“Bach to Brazil”
According to the New York Times, harpist Bridget
Kibbey “…makes it seem as though the instrument had
been waiting all its life to explode with the energetic
figures and gorgeous colors for her fingers themselves.”
Called the “Yo-Yo Ma of the harp,” by Vogue’s Senior
Editor Corey Seymour, Bridget Kibbey is a winner of a
prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, a Salon de Virtu-
osi SONY Recording Grant, an artist with the Chamber
Music Society of Lincoln Center, and winner of Premiere
Prix at the Journées de les Harpes Competition in Arles.
Kibbey has fast gained a reputation for her diverse,
energetic programming that spans the baroque, French
Masterworks, and rhythmic migration in South America.
Kibbey has toured and recorded with luminaries Placido
Domingo, Dawn Upshaw, and Gustavo Santaollalo for
SONY Records and Deutsche Grammaphon; and, her
own debut album, Love is Come Again, was named one
of the Top Ten Releases by Time Out New York.

“Incidents in the
Life of a Slave Girl”

The author (Harriet Jacobs) is the protagonist in
this solo piece which illuminates in shocking fashion
the traumas of slavery, particularly for
women and children.
This stage adaptation, by Wynn Handman, culminates
in Harriet Jacobs’ powerful and moving experiences
during the seven years she spent hiding in The Loop-
hole, a crawl space in her grandmother’s attic.
The truth of the author’s evocative words will emerge
with a visceral experience that may become an
enduring part of the audience’s understanding of the
“peculiar institution” of slavery.

“Performing Arts”
Praised for her captivating stage presence and
performances that are technically and musically
masterful, the groundbreaking young musician
Hanzhi Wang is the first accordionist to ever
win a place on the roster of Young Concert Art-
ists in its 59-year history. She is proving herself
to be the perfect ambassador for her instrument.
She inspires the next generation of accor-
dionists with lectures, performances, and
master classes.

“Voting for SA Positions”
On Election Day, candidates running for the positions of
Student Association (SA) president, SA executive vice
president, and SA social vice president will present their
platforms to the student body.
During the usual convocation time slot, students
hoping to represent the entire student body will take
three to five minutes each to explain their platforms
and try to convince the general populace to
vote in their favor.
Immediately following convocation is the Primary Voting
period. In order to be as informed as possible, please
be sure to attend.

Meet the firms and graduate schools offer students
of Southern Adventist University the opportunity to
network with potential employers, learn about health
careers, and consider options for graduate school.
Dozens of firms from the Greater Chattanooga area and
beyond will be present for students seeking internships,
full-time job opportunities and other prospects with the
participating firms.
Graduate school representatives from Southern, as
well as other Adventist colleges and universities, will be
present to discuss possibilities for students seeking to
obtain a graduate degree.
Also, local practitioners representing multiple health care
professions will be available to answer inquiries about
various medical related occupations.

KECHI OKWUCHI
“Student Association”
Kechi is a 29 year-old Nigerian-born woman, currently
living in Houston, Texas. She is an MBA student and
self-taught singer. Kechi found her true voice after her
accident -- a plane crash that took the lives of 107 of
109 passengers in Nigeria in 2005.
In 2019, she became a finalist on America’s Got Talent:
The Champions through Simon Cowell’s “golden buzz-
er.” On June 10th, 2018, she released her first single,
“Don’t You Dare,” on all music platforms. She has since
become a traveling artist, inspirational speaker and burn
survivor advocate for multiple burn survivor organiza-
tions, including Shriners Burns Hospitals.
Kechi has now chosen to forge ahead on a path
that allows her to explore both business
and artistic opportunities.

PAUL COPAN
“Hasel Lectureship”
Paul Copan (Ph.D. Philosophy, Marquette University)
is the Pledger Family Chair of Philosophy and Ethics
at Palm Beach Atlantic University, West Palm Beach,
Florida. He has also helped establish the new M.A. in
Philosophy of Religion at PBA.
For six years, he served as president of the Evangelical
Philosophical Society. He is author or editor of nearly
forty books, including works such as The Routledge
Companion to Philosophy of Religion, The Naturalness
of Theistic Belief, Creation out of Nothing, Philosophy
of Religion: Classic and Contemporary Issues, A Little
Book for New Philosophers, Is God a Moral Monster?,
and The Kalām Cosmological Argument (a two-volume
anthology). In 2017, he was a Visiting Scholar
at Oxford University.
Paul and his wife, Jacqueline, have six children, and
they reside in West Palm Beach, Florida. His website

“Asian Club”
For more than 20+ years, Pastor Justin Yang
has been involved with youth, young adults,
senior and inter-generational ministries in
various parts of the world.
He now wakes up daily with the dream to see all
of our churches becoming the best place for
all generations to grow together.
He currently serves as the Young Adult
Ministries Director for the Texas Conference.

DOUGLAS AXE
“Origins”
Douglas Axe is the director of Biologic Institute
and author of Undeniable: How Biology Confirms
Our Intuition That Life Is Designed (HarperOne).
His research uses both experiments and computer
simulations to examine the functional and structural
constraints on the evolution of proteins
and protein systems.
After a Caltech PhD, he held postdoctoral and research
scientist positions at the University of Cambridge, the
Cambridge Medical Research Council Centre, and
the Babraham Institute in Cambridge.
His work and ideas have been featured in many
scientific journals, including the Journal of Molecular
Biology, the Proceedings of the National Academy of
Sciences and Nature, and in such books as Signature
in the Cell and Darwin’s Doubt by Stephen Meyer.

KEVIN BURTON
“Research Day”
Kevin M. Burton (Ph.D. Candidate, Florida State
University) concentrates his research on the history
of race, apocalypticism, politics and the state.
He has developed a course for Griggs University,
taught at Florida State University and Southern
Adventist University and is currently a faculty member
of the Church History Department at the Seventh-day
Adventist Theological Seminary, an Assistant Director
of the Ellen G. White Estate, and the Director of the
Center for Adventist Research at Andrews University.
His doctoral dissertation explores Adventist political
involvement in the abolition movement. He currently
lives in Berrien Springs, Michigan, with his wife, Sarah
and children, Adelia, and John.
