16. Ideas from Sheffield dementia day centres and memory cafés

All of Sheffield’s dementia day centres, memory cafés and dementia-friendly groups have had to
physically close, but many are still running virtually and doing what sounds like a fantastic job of
supporting people to live well with dementia in these difficult times. Here are just a few glimpses of
what’s been happening across Sheffield…

Online memory café
With chairobics, entertainment, information and chat Parson Cross Memory Café has been
discovering new ways to meet.
https://www.facebook.com/parson.crossforum.5/posts/2537712393112463?__tn__=-R

Other Memory Cafés are looking at establishing online versions of their groups, and workers have
been getting to grips with using the different Zoom features to ensure groups run smoothly.

Virtual day centre
A virtual day centre is now held weekly on Sundays for Age UK Sheffield’s Wellbeing Centre
members using facetime, and it has gone down really well.
https://www.facebook.com/WellbeingCentreAUKS/posts/1307472216130299?__tn__=-R

Activity Pack deliveries
Age UK Sheffield’s Dementia Wellbeing Centre may have had to close its doors for the time being,
but those who would usually attend during the day are getting an activity pack delivered to their
house every week. These include photos, mini jigsaws and reminiscence cards which have been
ordered by the organisers.
https://www.facebook.com/WellbeingCentreAUKS/photos/a.415729325304597/131132542907831
1/?type=3&theater

Telephone calls
    • Stockbridge Community Care Group’s Community Dementia Co-ordinator is in regular
contact with their client list, checking people are ok and disseminating activity ideas.
    • Age UK Sheffield Day centre volunteers have been contacting members also; they have also
been sent information from customer profiles for conversation starters.
    • The Alzheimer’s Society has planned tele-conference lines so that carers of younger people
with dementia can offload with each other. One has also been set up for younger people
with dementia who usually attend the day centre activities.
    • Heeley Trust’s Dementia Worker calls all memory café attendees and volunteers every week,
checking they have enough food, gas, electricity, medication and ask if they need anything
else delivering. They are very reassured to speak to someone who is checking-in and enjoy
       having the weekly phone calls.

Social media – public groups
Parson Cross Forum posts daily updates on its public facebook page for its Memory Café attendees –
things to do, sources of support, photos of its online meetings (after seeking approval from those
attending).
https://www.facebook.com/parson.crossforum.5

Social media – private groups
Age UK Sheffield has a private Facebook group for its day centre members and their families. They
are providing regular posts with information and advice and well as checking in.

Ring and Sing session
The Alzheimer’s Society’s Young Onset Dementia Day Service ran a ring and sing session where
service users and carers joined in on a conference line. This was initially a pilot session, but feedback
was very positive and so they will be running a weekly session.
Email contact
The dementia worker for Woodhouse & District Community Forum is collecting family email
addresses from existing clients, in order to keep them updated about COVID 19 and also sending
‘The Daily Sparkle’ downloadable reminiscence tool and a resource link from Reading Friends.

Acts of kindness
Age UK Sheffield arranged for Rose & Bloom letterbox flowers to be sent to one day centre member
whose daughter had reported that her mother was feeling really down.
