Course Selections
All Course selections are completed using the Subject Selection Online system. Instructions on how to access and use
SSO will be issued via the email address of the primary Parent/Guardian as recorded in our school records. Please
ensure these details are up to date.

          1. On the school website https://cvc.wa.edu.au/ under the Teaching & Learning / Upper School / Year
11 Tab students will be able to access:

                         The link to the SSO Login screen on prescribed dates;

 The Year 11 Course Information Handbook, which contains overviews of the courses
                          available for selection, together with course prerequisites;

 The Year 10 Information Handbook which contains information for students currently
enrolled in Year 10. This is a SCSA publication which is designed to provide a reference
point for studies in Year 11 and 12, with particular reference to the WACE (Western
                          Australian Certificate of Education).

                         Information regarding VET, Careers and Workplace Learning;

                       The proposed Year 11 2021 Grid.

         2. Using the SSO program students select their Courses.

         3. After SSO closes preferences will be collated and decisions will be made about which courses will be
running in 2021. Courses that do not attract sufficient numbers will not run. Once this is decided
class groups will be created according to student selections. Whilst we try to place students into
their most preferred courses some students may not be allocated their highest ranking choices in
which case they will be placed in one of their reserve subjects.

         4. In December, once all of the classes, staff and room allocations for 2021 are completed, an invoice
will be sent to each family which will include the courses that their child is enrolled in for the
                  following year.

Requirements
 B grade or above in Year 10 English, plus achievement of Category 3 in OLNA.

What Is It All About?
The English ATAR course focuses on developing students’ analytical, creative, and critical thinking and communication

past, and from Australian and other cultures. Through close study and wide reading, viewing and listening, students

creating imaginative, interpretive, persuasive and analytical responses in a range of written, oral, multimodal and
digital forms.

Why Should I Choose This Course?
Successful completion of this course in Year 11 will enable you to enrol in ATAR English the following year, which is a

of Year 12 which will allow you to generate an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank).

Universities have approved the removal of the unacceptable combination rule for English ATAR and Literature ATAR,

scaled scores from both courses can count towards their Tertiary Entrance Aggregate and ATAR.

MATHEMATICS LEARNING AREA
Do I have to study Maths in Year 11 and 12?
Students must select at least one Mathematics course. A maximum of 2 can count towards ATAR.

    1. Tertiary Entrance Aggregate Bonus
10% of the scaled score/s in Mathematics Methods ATAR and Mathematics Specialist ATAR will be added to the
Tertiary Entrance Aggregate from which the ATAR will be derived.

    2. Unacceptable Combination Rules
Currently, students may count no more than two mathematics scaled scores in the calculation of the ATAR.
Specific unacceptable combination rules will apply:
 Mathematics Applications ATAR and Mathematics Methods ATAR
 Mathematics Applications ATAR and Mathematics Specialist ATAR
Only one scaled score from the unacceptable combination can be used in the calculation of the ATAR. Scores
from Mathematics Methods ATAR and Mathematics Specialist ATAR may BOTH be used in the ATAR calculation.

Mathematics Foundation Units 1 & 2

Requirements
Students who have demonstrated the minimum standard of numeracy in Year 9 NAPLAN or Year 10 (via OLNA) are not
eligible to enrol in Foundation Mathematics, unless they have not demonstrated the minimum standard of literacy.

Students who demonstrate the minimum standard of numeracy in Semester 1 of Year 11 are not eligible to continue
in the Foundation courses in Semester 2 of that year unless they are yet to demonstrate the literacy standard.

Students who demonstrate the minimum standard of numeracy in Semester 2 of Year 11 or during Year 12 will be
permitted to enrol in Foundation Mathematics in Year 12.

What Is It All About?
Mathematics Foundation is designed for students who have not demonstrated the Western Australian Certificate of
Education (WACE) standard of numeracy skills. These standards are based on Level 3 of the Australian Core Skills
Framework (ACSF) which outlines the skills required for individuals to meet the demands of everyday life and work in
a knowledge-based economy.

Foundation courses provide support for the development of functional numeracy skills essential for students to meet
the WACE standard of numeracy through engagement with the ACSF Level 3 numeracy core skills.

Why Should I Choose This Course?
The Mathematics Foundation course recognises some students have significant gaps in basic mathematical
understanding and application by the time they enter senior school. However, these same students have the potential
to learn, especially when involved in a learning program which connects with their current experience and knowledge.
The course focuses on functional numeracy embedded in familiar and meaningful contexts which are relevant to
young adults.

Requirements
    Year 10 Mathematics – A grade.
 May not be combined with Mathematics Applications.

What Is It All About?
Mathematics Methods is an ATAR course which focuses on the use of calculus and statistical analysis. The study of
calculus provides a basis for understanding rates of change in the physical world, and includes the use of functions,
their derivatives and integrals, in modelling physical processes. The study of statistics develops students’ ability to
describe and analyse phenomena that involve uncertainty and variation.

    Year 10 Mathematics – A grade.
 Must be studied with Mathematics Methods, but not Mathematics Applications.

What Is It All About?
Mathematics Specialist is an ATAR course which provides opportunities, beyond those presented in the Mathematics
Methods ATAR course, to develop rigorous mathematical arguments and proofs, and to use mathematical models
more extensively. The Mathematics Specialist ATAR course contains topics in functions and calculus that build on and
deepen the ideas presented in the Mathematics Methods ATAR course as well as demonstrate their application in
many areas. The Mathematics Specialist ATAR course also extends understanding and knowledge of statistics and
introduces the topics of vectors, complex numbers and matrices. The Mathematics Specialist ATAR course is the only
ATAR mathematics course that should not be taken as a stand-alone course.

 Human Biology General Units 1 & 2

Requirements
 C grade or above in Year 10 Science.

What Is It All About?
The course explores how the human body works. It focuses on the cells, tissues and organs that work together to
make up our major body systems. It also covers the human body’s requirements for healthy living as well as
reproduction and pregnancy, and the various technologies available to treat associated disorders.

In Unit 1: Healthy Body students will study: In Unit 2: Reproduction students will study:
 Cells, tissues, organs, systems  DNA, genes and chromosomes
 Respiratory system  Cell division
 Circulatory system  Reproductive systems
 Digestive system and nutrition  Pregnancy, birth and infancy
 Urinary system  Reproductive technologies
 Associated disorders and dysfunctions  Sexually transmitted infections
