REFLECTIONS Submitted by Jocelyn Hainsworth Here it is, the first day of a new year. The older I get, the more this day is spent reflecting on the past, present, and future. What are the things I’ve learned in the past twelve months? How does today stack up against other New Year’s days I’ve lived? And, what does this new year hold in store? No one is going to pretend that 2021 was all that much fun. Isolated because of Covid, we spent the holidays alone. It wasn’t the end of the world and we made the best of it, but once was enough. All the things that usually get to me – the noise, the mess, the never ending need to plan another meal – I missed these as much as company and conversations with kids and grandkids. I think that was the second wave of the Covid storm, and we had no idea how many more waves were to come. We still don’t. There is no point in obsessing over that though. I put the Christmas decorations away last year and looked toward spring. I would order seeds and plan my gardens. Green is the colour of hope. With high optimism Tourism planted 105 trees at the campgrounds. With equally high practicality we stuffed straw bales over their roots and around their tender stems because Mother Nature was being very stingy with her rainfall. It turned out to be a very good (if a little messy looking) thing to do. We will be replacing a few trees this spring but most of them made it with flying colours. The weeds, presuming they would be unloved and uncared for, fended for themselves and have done spectacularly. It’s a work in progress. Back at home, 2021’s gardens weren’t such a great success story. I did have access to dugout water and we had a couple timely rains but the heat was brutal – on the plants and the human who was trying to weed and harvest its bounty. The cold, dry winter had taken some of my perennials, the fruit trees hardly bloomed, and the strawberries died back to a quarter of 2019’s plants. On the up side, vaccines were approved and we were more than happy to “stick it to Covid”. At the end of June we rejuvenated our deck. It was the hottest two weeks of the summer – we drank our weight in water and iced tea and beer and somehow didn’t die. Heck, we even got the deck done too, although it was so hot the composite material we used got all soft and bendy. It was August before it got cool enough to sit out there and enjoy it. This was the year I learned to Zoom. I meet with a writer’s group every second Wednesday and discuss each other’s work. I’m pretty sure this is a gift Covid has given me - an opportunity that wouldn’t have come up otherwise. You know what they say about silver linings. And, speaking of silver linings, our Tourism group decided to host a BBQ lunch at the Farmer’s Markets this summer. When we couldn’t interest others to take on this fundraising opportunity we had to cover it ourselves, but the sellers and the buyers loved it and proved to be a great money maker. We will be doing more of that. Harvest came and went with yields better than people hoped for. I dug my potatoes and carrots and the rest of the disaster Book your suite and receive one of got plowed under. Our giant pumpkins were turned into the following options: fabulous Jack-o-lanterns. We ran a pump for days moving water from the dugout over to where we hope it soaked in and replenished our well. It’s a very real concern with everyone whether their water source will make it through the winter. No one is complaining about the Christmas snowfall. Every little bit counts. Covid’s third wave rolled through in time for Thanksgiving, all of us exhausted with the very mention of its name. Now the raging wildfire of Omicron is upon us; here’s hoping it’s the milder version that they are saying it likely is ... and the beginning of the end. And so, here we are, on the first day of a new year. Christmas was real this year with family and food and friends and fun. Hopefully we can get this year started off on the right foot. There is only one more reflection to consider ... the one in the mirror. There seems to be more of me than there used to be.
JANUARY HAVEN HAPPENINGS Submitted by Barbara Dennis HAPPY NEW YEAR! A new year, a new month, a new start! A clean slate to write upon – how will YOU write 2022. A month ago we were still decorating for Christmas – here Albert Magatioux gets into the spirit with help from Annette Carriere. Our Residents were blessed by the Redvers School children when they received these great Christmas posters, plus individual Christmas cards plus decorations made by the students. Thank you to all those students who kindly brought color, hope and cheer to the Haven. Speaking of color and cheer, many thanks to Robert and Katy Soroka at ERP, for gifting each resident with a personal poinsettia to brighten their rooms and remind them they are loved. Besides Christmas parties as evidenced here with our Christmas sweaters designed and worn by all especially for the occasion we also had birthday celebrations. There were two residents who celebrated birthdays and more than one staff member. Here Wendy Frecon is sung ‘Happy Birthday’ accompanied by Len Batke on the harmonica. December would not be complete without celebrating Christmas Day – and so we did! We are so very pleased to report that many of our residents were able to attend family functions over the Christmas weekend: and some chose to bring the celebration to the Haven for private family gathering. Restrictions are still in place for public gathering of this kind but families are able to join together. So very satisfying!! And what would Christmas be without a visit from the Big Guy! We are ecstatic to report that Santa himself dropped in Christmas morning. The bitter cold of overnight was just too taxing for Santa’s reindeer. Santa, being the ever-mindful reindeer expert saved his last delivery for here at the Haven so his reindeer could take a breather and warm up a bit before their last leg home to the North Pole. Hard working, Christmas day staff and each resident received a Santa gift and got a photo taken before Santa Claus bid us all a Merry Christmas as he exited the building. Santa with Margaret Nelson, Charles Hofer and Mary Bartley. The residents were very pleased to be able to attend the Christmas Parade Dec 11. Sincere and appreciative compliments to the organizers. Good work for pulling it all together. Nothing happens until some one makes it happen and you made it happen! Thank you very much for doing so. A suggestion for next year if planned for similar date – starting the parade at dusk would be beneficial to allow viewers to see the individual entries as well as enjoy the lights. Best wishes for future endeavors. Writing January 2022? Rumor has it that there is some serious sharp shooting happening soon as well as a quintuplet birthday celebration in January alone. Here we are in next year already: may the road rise to meet you and friends be there for you.
